Michigan Gets Florida In The Peach Bowl Comment Count

As it was written in the stars: Michigan and Florida will play in a semi-major bowl game after both fail to achieve their regular season goals. A baffling decision given how bored both fanbases must be of this matchup.

This edition of the Gators is in their first year under Dan Mullen and is in the awkward jerky phase when a very good coach takes over for a not so good one. Thus results like a 27-19 win over LSU and a 41-14 whooping of FSU coexist with a 38-17 loss to Mizzou and 27-16 loss to Kentucky.

S&P+'s spreadsheets are down for updating at the moment but the overall rankings are up at Football Outsiders. Florida ranks 14th, with the #27 offense and #26 defense. S&P+ makes Michigan a 6-point favorite on a neutral field.

You may remember some of their key players: Feleipe Franks has added 1.3 YPA this year and 15 TDs without increasing his INTs; Lamical Perine and Jordan Scarlett split RB carries down the middle and both average 5.9 YPA. Onetime Michigan target Van Jefferson is their leading receiver, although like Michigan this is a situation where there are a bunch of guys in about the same range in an offense that doesn't throw a ton.

Fuller analysis later.

I'm just wondering who else (besides the UF fanbase and less than the whole UM fanbase) in the country wants to watch this. I feel like the bowl selection committees didn't want to watch either team again this season, so just put them together.

I was born in Atlanta when Bump Elliott was still coaching and I’ve lived in the area for my whole life; I have been a Walmart Wolverine since third grade and for years I lived in hopes that Michigan would get an invitation to the Peach Bowl, even understanding that this meant by default that it would mean that their season finished poorly, as the Peach Bowl has always been a third tier bowl game before Arthur Blank got his new stadium built last year.  I just wanted to see the winged helmets and hear “The Victors (as written)” playing in person.

Now I’ve got the chance and after everything else that’s gone on in my life (and in the program, especially), I don’t even know if I feel like being bothered with it.  I admit, seeing Atlanta United playing for the MLS Cup this coming Saturday has taken some of the oxygen out of my personal atmosphere as far as sports are concerned, but after all this time watching this team on TV I SHOULD be a lot more excited about the possibility of seeing them in person and I’m just not.  I don’t know if it’s a reflection of the state of my fanhood, my middle-agedness, the general malaise that I’m feeling regarding the state of the program, the opponent, the 62 points, or any combination there of.

Judging by the comments in this thread I’m not alone.  I don’t know where I was going with this...just needed to get it off my chest I guess.  Go Blue.

My experience watching Florida this year is other than LSU they looked not so great against good teams.

I would totally discount whipping  FSU, the Seminoles were a damn mess in every possible way.

First team to 31 minutes TOP wins? Might make it more interesting, our coaches definitely have that game plan ready, and it will make the game shorter.

I mean...

...why do they have to tie the Big 12 into the Sugar Bowl along with the SEC...if they want to Bowl system to survive and be relevant, then maybe when major bowls aren't part of the CFP, they need to reopen them for at-large bids...a 4 loss Texas has no business in the Sugar Bowl....Michigan could very well get clowned by Georgia but a Michigan-Georgia Sugar Bowl would be awfully interesting and would make money.

How is Michigan not playing on New Year’s Day? And Florida? Again? Something is broken. And not just UM’s D vs. the mesh.

Couldn’t care less about this.

I see all the disappointment and negativity about this, but time to move on.  We lost to OSU which absolutely sucks, but the season is not done and I sure hope our players have more resilience than some of the fans.

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about this:

1) It is a Michigan game against a quality opponent that I expect will be "up" to try and get some payback against us.

2) The Peach Bowl is now a NY6 bowl.  You have to get over the fact that the Peach Bowl was historically insignificant - it isn't going forward.

3) The stadium is awesome and is becoming a larger piece of the college football landscape (it regularly hosts the Kickoff Classic, SEC championship, and will also rotate for the playoffs).  It also is hosting the upcoming Super Bowl and, as a bonus, Arthur Blank keeps all the concession prices low.

4) And there are a lot of things for visitors to do in Atlanta that can make the trip worthwhile - College Football Hall of Fame, MLK National Historical Park, Center for Civil and Human Rights, World of Coca-Cola, and absolutely great places to eat and drink.

Net, I'm going and I'm going to root like crazy for Michigan - same as always.

The only thing worse about this Mickey Mouse bowl is that it isn’t being played in FL.  Can’t imagiine that the kids are excited about Atlanta after going to Rome...  But seriously, I’m glad for the team and the players that they have an opportunity to play.  Go Blue!

Just more examples of Stupid people doing stupid things for stupid reasons.  I mean does the committee know anything about college football?  CFU v. Florida and LSU v. Michigan is astronomically better under every single metric.
