OT: 2017 Top 50 WR Tyjon Lindsey Announces Transfer from Nebraska
Intro/Summary
- Here's his 247 page, which says he had a Michigan offer
- Ohio State was also high on his list
- Here's the article about his transfer announcement, including his stats (three catches for 22 yards and two rushes for nine yards)
Some Thoughts
Michigan has been on the prowl for top-end WR talent, and he had a Michigan offer, so I thought I'd put this out there. Ohio State was thought to lead in his original recruitment before he pledged to Nebraska. He's on the shorter side (5'9), which might be a good fit for the future. If he was eligible for this year, I wouldn't post this up, with Gray and Jackson already in the fold.
Nebraska has been cleaning house of late, and Lindsey is the sixth transfer out of the top eight recruits from Nebraska's 2017 class rumored to be leaving. The young man's output hasn't been great, but then again, who on Nebraska team is having a good year? His redshirt is preserved, as per the new 4-game rule. It could be argued that he's a bit of a head case, but with the kind of season Nebraska is having, and with all the other departures, this might be a perfectly rational decision from a good kid.

So that's a devil's triangle + 1?

I love that drinking game!

so You’re saying there’s a chance?

Oddly specific analogy...

He's 5'-9" and 200 lbs. We're young and loaded at WR and short pretty much full for this recruiting class. I'm sure he's a fine young man, but no thank you.

I'll never understand firing Pellini for Mike Riley.

They were SICK and TIRED of winning 9 and 10 games a season. What's to understand?

I agree with the "no thanks". I dont blame kids for transferring under certain circumstances. I am not one of these people that thinks a kid should ALWAYS stick it out.
GET OFF MY LAWN....etc
But in this particular case with the whole culture change happening there its at least a little concerning. Plus he is not the prototypical receiver we are usually looking for. And we already have a smaller guy coming in with Giles Jackson.

This is pretty much the pattern for how historically good programs begin to struggle. Happened to us too.

How many UM kids have transferred under Harbaugh?
October 3rd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
They think this will hurt them now, but starting around the 2020 season is when it's really going to hurt. Much like what we experienced last year, very few upperclassmen to lean on or draw leadership from. Just a dearth of talent at places where they're going to need it.
I expect Frost will have to rely on a lot of transfers and JuCos for these next couple of years, at least until he gets the depth of this team to where he wants it.

Good athlete, but I wouldn't be very interested in him. He was a teammate of Tate Martell at Bishop Gorman. I didn't get great vibes from Lindsey during the recruiting process.

Vibes about attitude? Skill?

Pretty sure he was committed to OSU until flipping to Nebraska late. (This caused the late OSU attempted courtship of Oliver Martin.)
There was at least some debate (iirc) on whether this was a “processing” by OSU despite his lofty rankings.
October 3rd, 2018 at 12:10 PM ^
Yeah, it was rumored he was processed. I think the way he worded his decision to reopen his recruitment implied that he was processed iirc. He didn't look all that good at the opening that year imo. Meyer started recruiting the WR position again and that probably sent Lindsey the message to move on.

“Michigan has been on the prowl for top-end WR talent, and he had a Michigan offer, so I thought I'd put this out there.”...didn’t we sign the highest rated WR recruiting class in school history just two cycles ago with DPJ, Collins, Black and Oliver?
October 3rd, 2018 at 11:47 AM ^
Yes, but we need more bodies. We’re playing a true freshman only because we have to. Plus, after next year 2/4 of those guys could be gone so we will need more talent there. Just because Michigan signs a good class at the position doesn’t mean they can coast for the next 2 cycles.

Things are probably going to get worse for Nebraska before they get better. Frost is such a personality clash with Mike Riley so I'm not surprised that some of the guys recruited by Riley don't feel like they mesh well with Frost.
That being said, I do think Frost is still the guy to bring Nebraska back. He's got to destroy an entire rotting foundation, one that's been rotting for the better part of 20 years, and completely rebuild it from the ground up. I'm still surprised they haven't won a game, but I think he, his players, the fans, and a lot of outsiders will look back at this season, 4-5 years from now, and say that this whole season was necessary and had to happen for Nebraska to get itself back to being among the nation's best.
I think he's got to be given at least four years to get his program up and running. Remember that his UCF team had a lot of guys left over from George O'Leary's team that won a Fiesta Bowl, and it's in a state overflowing with talent. Rebuilding Nebraska in what is now arguably the deepest conference in America is a far bigger animal.

He was actually committed to OSU for most of the process. Not sure why that ended.
October 3rd, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^
My guess is OSU found someone they liked more and they encouraged Lindsey to start looking elsewhere.
No one volunteers to de-commit from Urban Meyer to go play for Mike Riley instead.

FYI, unless I'm missing something, Tyjon screwed himself over. I made this point in the "Understanding the new Redshirt Rule" thread, but it's probably more on-topic here.
Redshirting doesn't help the kid unless he plans to play D-II next year.
You still only get five years from high school graduation to complete four years of eligibility. So, if he transfers to a D-I school he still has to sit out due to the year-in-residence requirement... and that effectively costs him a year of eligibility due to the five-year rule, even though this year is a redshirt year.
Unless Nebraska is now offering degrees that you can complete in 15 months, I don't see this working out the way he expects.
