Maryland 2 pm press conference

Submitted by carolina blue on

Maryland has announce that they will hold a press conference at 2:00 pm this afternoon.  This obviously is suggesting that Durkin is done.

I expect Ohio State to release a statement concurrent with this press conference that Urban Meyer has been retained.

How nice of Maryland to take the focus off of Urban Meyer and OSU. In all actuality, if the ESPN article and current/former players revelations are true, Durkin and his crew of flunkies should probably think of something besides coaching. I don't see how any parent would willingly send their kids to that program now.

He had a suspended license but was allowed to drive for recruiting trips.....  And he didn't let his boss know this?   If that's so, its yet one more incident that justifies termination.  More likely his boss did know and its yet one more incident that was swept under the rug.

And this dude has the balls to ask for his job back.  WTAF?

It's mind-boggling that Durkin could observe his S&C coach's interactions with players on a daily basis and think it was the right way for them and himself to carry out their duties and responsibilities.

Don't you think these interactions are shaded one way?   I always read these stories with a grain of salt since the coaches can't give their side.

I think about Bo grabbing Dierdorf by the gut and wondering if he would be fired today for that.

Knocking over some kids food and calling him a pussy is nothing and window dressing.  The only question in this case is did they take proper precautions and care with the kid who died.   If they didn't they should be fired, if not there is nothing to see here.     All the rest of this is Rich Rod stretchgate bullshit.

In some cases it can be a former player with a grudge, but the allegations from the ESPN article go far beyond the run of the mill hard ass coach behavior during conditioning. If true, the behavior of the staff involved is abuse plain and simple. You do not have an adult in a position of authority force a player to eat until they vomit or throw a weight at them.

We are not talking about "window dressing" on top of the McNair situation, but the context for how that even happens. Allegations against the staff of abusive behavior make it far easier to believe that it was deemed acceptable to have a player dragged across the field during wind sprints.

Well I've never seen a press conference to announce someone was *not* getting fired.  I wonder what's next for his career.  If he can't safely be trusted as a head coach, hard to imagine he can safely be trusted as an assistant.

O Canada we stand on guard(s)(tackles, center) for thee!  If they can't you won't be for long!!! Apparently DJ didn't care if his guards could stand after practice or conditioning.

If a program values him as a recruiter he'll end up somewhere, SEC probably, as an assistant but not immediately.

Yeah, I would think this means that Durkin is definitely out, although the Maryland sites that I checked do not have much posted beyond the statements from the AD and the university president, along with the portion of the story that was already reported. We might have posted more information than some of their sites, in fact.

As for Ohio State making any statement or holding a presser, I'll throw my bet in with the people who said it will be part of a Friday afternoon news dump.

I'm sure Durkin and a few others will be fired today. After one year off I bet Durkin is hired as a D-coordinator or Assistant to the head coach at Ole Miss, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Okie State, Kentucky, Missouri, or some other such school next year.  If there is any national outrage to the typical hiring rumors, those teams will pass and he will have to move to the next tier down. Someone will hire him. It's sad, but inevitable.

Maryland Athletic Department to Durkin: "Here's the keys to the football program. Do whatever you like, go 6-6 or 5-7 every year if you want, fade into the background of B1G and collect a fat paycheck. Just don't kill anyone or make us look horrible in public. Can you do that?"

Durkin: pouts "I guess..."

Does getting fired for killing a player automatically put Durkin at the top of the OSU coaching staff under Meyer?  I would think so seeing as he's worked with Meyer before and Meyer has collected a wife abuser, a player abuser, and a child rapist protector who were already on the staff.  Seems like after this, Durkin would be a natural fit in that group.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but I really wish people could just own the situation. This president is still trying to shine a light (albeit dim) on the university by saying stuff like the athletic staff "misdiagnosed" the situation and how his office is set up to receive input from students but in this case, we heard about the allegations via the media..."but regardless of the source" we are still committed yadayadayada.

Just show some ownership, too much fluff.

Also...as the AD speaks...he has not personally witnessed the allegations as described by the media. Well no shit. You're the AD. It's like when the teacher walks into the room, of course you'll be on your best/better behavior. What a joke. Just fire some people already.

Crazy but I think ESPN put this story out now to lessen the scrutiny that Urban is getting. This story could’ve been released anytime during the summer. Yet they waited until now to release it. Furthermore they were caught looking silly by not saying anything on Urban until hours after McMurphy’s report. So now they are trying to get back in the good graces of college football fans by pumping this story. Don’t get me wrong this story is pretty awful and especially the fact that Jordan McNair has died as a result.

For now (due process). I have a hard time believing Durkin keeps his job when the University said they are responsible for the death. I also have a hard time with the fact that he wasn't fired today. Its his program and a player died under his watch. Then today they accept blame. How could he not be canned?

My summary of that was that the University president did fine, but the AD was a disaster.  Which given that most of it was scripted, may have been the president hanging the AD out to dry.

I assume Durkin will be gone at a later date, but kudos to UMD for just admitting legal liability.  Compare that to MSU, which fought with every fiber of their being.

Durkin will be gone.  With major media outlets calling for his head, no way Maryland will keep him.  (Maryland, not being a win-above-everything school, is most decidedly not PSU or MSU).

Today would have been too soon, though, with an investigation still pending.

Maryland legal team got GAME!

Well at least Maryland gets out of this with a Shred if integrity and decency while Ohio St will find a way to beat the system and Keep Urban and once and for all cement their reputation as a win at all costs institution with low regard for academics..Remember it was Ohio State player who said they dont come to OSU to get a education

I was in Dublin today - and brought up a conversation about Meyer.  Mind you this was with two women HS teachers.   They completely 100% have Meyer's back and are blinded to the point that it is kinda cult like.  Oh well.  Will be better to beat them with that Dbag in charge anyway.

I actually give the President props for calling for due process and not knee-jerking.  There needs to be an actual investigation before people start getting axed.  I don't know the details, and if it all turns out to be true, then so be it.  But I'm getting a bit tired of the modern mentality by some that allegations equal evidence.

After watching that press conference, I believe Maryland is going to try to retain Durkin through this. And regardless of what they do, or do not do, with Durkin the President and AD just opened the University up to a huge lawsuit. Wow.
