I agree on some accounts, but you’re still not looking at the whole picture. A lot of playing LT over RT is mental as well.

I cant speak directly on this, but it could simply be that JBB being a 5th year senior just knows the spot better, he knows what’s coming at him, he’s quicker to react, and he can read a defense better. It’s not just speed and blocking ability. It’s a huge mental position as well.

You can’t necessarily just look at individual skills. You have to look at how it’s all put together.

Now I can’t sit here and tell you JBB is better than Runyan. I’m just like most of you. All I know is what I hear from people like UMBig11.

What I can tell you, is that LT and RT are fairly significantly  different positions. Being good at one doesn’t mean you’ll be good at the other. And the coaches seem to favor JBB over Runyan for that LT job. I have enough faith in this staff and specifically Warinner to make the correct decision in that regard.

This article is outdated. Defense don't put their best pass rusher on the weakside, they move them all over and they even put their best pass rusher on the strongside because you want them in a favorable matchup.  So you need strong pass protector on both side regardless.  Look at the NFL, the best pass rushers are the ones lining up over RT like Von Miller, JJ Watt, Khalil Mack, Cam Jordan, Melvin Ingram, etc.

The biggest difference between LT and RT is the footwork and techniques. Everything you do at LT, you have to do the opposite. For example at LT, you have to push off from your inside foot aka right foot to get off the stance quickly. For RT, you have to do the opposite of it. Same with setting landmark whether if it's jumpset, 45 degree set or vertical set and use your techniques. It messes with your brain if you don't practice on both side. It's a matter of comfort left on stance, setting your landmark and use whatever techniques to block edge pass rushers.

Eh, LT and RT are way way more similar than different. If you are a good LT you can pretty much guarantee you can be a good RT as well. If you are a good fullback you can still suck at tailback. If you are a good kicker you can still suck at punting. I think you are making SDE and WDE sound like way different positions which is a little bit misleading. Our SDE is faster than our WDE for example. But doesn't that mean we should move Gary to WDE to rush the blindside? Nope. In today's game there is so much movement and rotations with players the traditional WDE and SDE roles are not as unilateral as they once were.

Obviously they’re more similar than different. We aren’t comparing QB to kicker.

But they are different enough to where you can’t say “if he’s clearly our best right tackle, why isn’t he at left tackle.” Being good at one doesn’t mean you’ll be good at the other. Is it possible? Of course.

But there’s a reason when Taylor Decker got hurt that the Lions signed a “who’s who of suck” instead of just moving Wagner to the left side. They’re different enough to where it’s more complicated than just having your best tackle on the left side.

Seems as though a lot of this banter could be put to rest if there were any practice insiders who could tell us who was at LT with the ones and or twos in Spring ball. Do we have any of those? Did Brian even cover it in a tea leaf post? I don't remember.

When I look at this team, I feel good to great about every position except the tackles.  (Well, I have a bit of concern about safety, but not a lot.).   I just hope that poor tackle play doesn’t torpedo what could be a terrific season.  I can’t wait to get back to beating MSU and OSU with some frequency, beginning now.

Before and after the offensive tackles, that is straight football porn. What a loaded team if we can get just a little pass protection. Just a little, man.

That italicized word again is little

I remember one of the games JBB started at RT last season.  O'Korn took the shotgun snap, had to make the DE over JBB miss then looked down field. for a WR.  Its gotta be Hudson.

We better enjoy the excellent players on defense this year, because how many will be gone to the draft next year.

Not that the defense will be bad next year.

A year ago at about this time, how many people were predicting that Michigan's starting right tackle in the opening game against Florida would be this guy?

Obviously the LT spot is probably the biggest question mark for the offense next year.

I’m (1) curious to see what difference Warriner makes for the OL schemes and (2) curious how much the offense changes in general. Different options with Patterson as QB, and that alone could change the way we look at the OL.

Right.

If this offense can adapt and modernize and implement more spread concepts with RPOs and a mobile QB, it will really help the O-Line out.

If we continue to plod along with snapping everything from under center, with a QB who doesn't attempt to utilize his mobility and simply stands in the pocket the whole time, we're probably in for a rough year baring a few miracles from Warriner and Co.

If JBB starts, that would mean 4 of the 5 starting offensive lineman are at least 4* recruits. It's crazy how O line is still an issue at UM.

This is what baffles me the most.

It's not like we're throwing a bunch of walk-ons out there on the O-Line and expecting them to dominate the trenches.

So what gives? Why are we going into year 4 and the O-Line is STILL a giant question mark?

LOL - Mlive.   Who are these mlive goofballs anyway?   Watch their cringeworthy YouTube videos where they list the recruitment status of Braylon Edwards’ “son” (actually his brother).  Those self-appointed “experts” on everything sports are actually clueless buffoons.

One comment that still irks me a bit was from Higdon. “If I would of rushed for 1000 yards I would of entered the draft”

Dont really know how to take that comment. Me me me or team team team. That one still makes me wonder. Just saying as it could be nothing but it stuck out to me.
