How much do we need to raise on GoFundMe to get the Athletic Department to quit whoring out the coaching titles?

Submitted by I'm Batman on

I could barely even get past the damn titles of Warde and Beilein in the extension story.

Its freaking sickening that we cant call our coaches just freaking coaches.

Im seriously developing a healthy hatred in my heart for the egotistical a-holes who shelled out the money to ruin the damn titles. Screw you Donald Shepard, David and Meridith Kaplan, and especially J. Ira and Nikki Harris.

And screw the athletic department for selling out.

Get off my lawn rant over. Let the invisible meaningless negs commence.

You better count your lucky stars I don’t have the cash to do this type shit. I would get all extra obnoxious if I knew I could piss Batman off.....

“The ToledoWolverine and family 3rd stall from the right in the women’s bathroom” so I can be in your head whilst you squat to pee. See what I did there? I was ironic, obnoxious, sexist and sarcastic all at once, I’m a frigging genius. And humble too.

I mean seriously though, just gloss over it, they paid for it, nobody is getting hurt. But yeah it’s a wee bit much. At least that giant fucking noodle hasn’t been around much.

What can i say? After cleaning up the streets of Gotham, im searching high and low for something new to fight. Egotistical A-holes seemed a good target.

WD might be a good target as well. The guy thinks hes special because Dave Brandon wrote him an email, and it got mentioned online. Talk about a self important ass bag. His ego is so inflated, he needs 30+ handles to contain it. Dude you got talked down to by an even bigger ass bag. Get over yourself.

Here's a gentle hint.    Instead of composing a rage-filled post with toxic words like "whoring out", be more diplomatic.   This post could be recast in a much more diplomatic way that would not immediately turn off the masses and stimulate a genuine discussion.

My take:  I'm happy as hell that we have generous donors to subsidize our coaching salaries.   Similar to the many esteemed professorships at the university.

Your idea of a GoFundMe campaign to liberate our coaches from the shackles of named coaching positions is laughable.   You realize how an endowment works, right?   Good luck with your 100 million dollar GoFundMe effort to perpetually spin off a cool 10 million dollars per year for head coaches.

The obvious thing is to just ignore it, much as you might (or should) ignore Nike/Arby’s Cup OT threads.  But something abstract like position titles offends the OP’s delicate aesthetic palette. Such is the human condition, to see offense (“Whoring” seems pejorative to me) in an issue in which they have no stake.  Try running an all-consuming machine like Michigan’s athletic department and see if your perspective doesn’t change.  For myself, I’ll gladly trade some foppish sounding titles for commercialization of the game experience as a means of raising operating capital.

I find them long and cumbersome but this is a little much.  It is also something they do with certain faculty positions, so it's not without precedence.  As long as it's human donors and not corporations I suppose I can live with it.

I know you aren't actually, seriously, suggesting that higher profile, high net wealth individuals should donate anonymously instead of letting it be known. There are only two main draws for these types of people to donate, other than the general do-good reason that we all have (and most of us regular people don't donate that much of our income/wealth so let's not pretend that this do-good reason alone is enough for high net worth individuals to behave differently than we do).

1) Leaving a legacy, doing something worthwhile and leaving a mark on the world, changing things for the better, is a normal, human draw that makes it more logical for high net worth people to donate a larger percentage than you or I.

2) Peer accountability. The idea that those with much, much is expected, or that those who have earned much owe a debt to the world that gave it to them. Nobody wants to be a scrooge, and seeing that your peers are making large impacts on the world is a great way to get you to reciprocate or copy them.

If high net wealth individuals are simply supposed to donate anonymously, they will have less incentive to actually donate, and even less to donate in the same quantities.

"I do all my donations anonymously" doesn't cut it for the super wealthy, even if it's actually true.

A very wealthy individual in my community wanted to pay for a new building at the university medical school.  He did not want his name on the building.  The medical school encouraged him to do so, because they said anonymous money did not encourage other wealthy individuals to donate. Seeing a name on the building would.  In essence, he agreed to be a "good role model."

This is a sign its time to take a step back from Michigan athletics.  Not quit being a fan, or following, etc.  Just take a few weeks away from here, Freep, anything related to Michigan sports.  I've done that this year.  Just not spending as much time following everything and I find myself nice and relaxed.  If something that trivial gets you that worked up a break can be a nice thing.

This is supposed to be a pass time for us.  I cannot control anything with the school or teams so I'm really working on not letting this control my level of happiness.  Sure a win MSU or OSU will make me happy, but I'm working on a loss not destroying my week.

I agree with the OP's sentiment - I, too, find the names silly and annoying and they really do look like stupid in the press releases.  If the Onion were to parody a Michigan press release on this basis, it would not look any different.

That said, it is, at most, a minor annoyance.  I just can't get myself even a bit worked up over it.  It's just not that big of a deal.  And, no, I would not pay my own money to get rid of this.  If I am going to get worked up over anything about our program, my issues, in order, would be: (1) our OL recruiting and play; (2) our lack of wins against OSU over the past decade or so; (3) that Sparty somehow remains relevant and continues to give us trouble (since I come from a time when they were an afterthought who we always beat); (4) NO, DAMN IT, that was not goal tending by Trey Burke!!!; and (5) MGoBlog 3.0.

I tend to agree with the OP that the titles sound asinine when used in external communications regarding the the coaches, though my objection doesn't reach the same level. I just think, "ugh, it sounds pimp-ish to attach donors names to coaching titles and say them in public......which isn't very "Michigan". It is hard to argue that it isn't an awkward application of the concept and I'll bet there are some donors who would be open to an alternative.

I totally get the legacy aspect and the need for donors, so some form of associating the donor name with the title that doesn't involve pasting it onto every mention of the coaching title in all PR communications might be more palatable. Say they pick a large wall on an athletic building in public somewhere and list all the coach titles and the donors that endowed each, plus put a large plaque or sign over the office of each coach that mentions the endowment, attach it to the title any time there is a conference title or coach honored in some way, etc. etc. There are 200 ways to attach a donor name to something they endow without the uncomfortable insertion of it in public statements.

Compromise?

Get over it with your class envy BS.

When you are a billionaire you can endow whatever you want and do in anonymously. Until then enjoy having great coaches and a university that can afford to pay them. Or don't.  No one cares.

It kinda has a NASCAR feel to it.... As long as the coaches don't make it a point to thank their sponsors during post game interviews, it's ok.

If someone wants to donate millions just to have their name on a small plaque by the coaches office and in official press releases I don't really see what the big deal is.

Absolutely. Any cause or institution that accepts donations with a name attached is whoring themselves. (Shut down C.S. Mott!) Also, anyone donating money except anonymously is an egomaniac who should be shunned, and their money burned.

They are just coaches.  Everyone calls Harbaugh the head football coach, which he is.  That someone was willing to pay a lot of money to endow this position is a good thing.

Maybe they should follow the academic side of the house, and reserve a titled chair until such time as that coach reaches tenure. Then it would carry more prestige.
