Since the new renovation do you frequent Mgoblog less?

Submitted by chad on

I dont know about everyone else but with the new mgoblog site (change and not mobile friendly) do you find yourself frequenting the page less? I know I use to come here everyday numerous times. Now its maybe once or twice a week.

*Could also be slow slow summer months for Michigan sports as well.

I'm trying to reserve judgment until I see how the site responds to Football season and whether improvements are made over time.  This is always a slow period and I really don't want to be a "get off my lawn" old guy.....so I'll keep an open mind for now.

With that said, I definitely visit less.  With the old site I could see whether there was new content immediately on my PC or Mobile.  Now it takes multiple clicks and scrolling with either platform, so I take those steps less often.  I think the amount of user content has decreased and that plays a role too.  Maybe those won't matter come August....

My wishlist for the next round of improvements:

  1. Get rid of the "recent post" items in the header.  They take up too much room, they are redundant to recent posts below, and they're horrible for mobile.  The idea is okay, but just turn them into a list somewhere - not a huge picture.
  2. Fix "the jump".  When we get into UFRs or in-season posts that are large, clicking on the jump should take you where you were, not having to rescroll and find it.  What's the point of calling it "a jump" at that point?  Might as well just post headlines on the front page with a brief description rather than a portion of the article - maybe that's the compromise.
  3. Improve the mobile experience.  Doesn't have to be an app (though I loved it).  But I want to see and have access to posts without multiple clicks and lots of scrolling.

I know most people will add things about comments and voting - which I'd support.  But my consumption of MGoBlog doesn't require those to be enjoyable as much as the way in which it is consumed.

I'm glad the site is evolving and I will be patient.....while visiting less often for now.

I used to worry that it had something to do with my search history. But then I got them on my work computer in Incognito that I have never used for anything sordid and whose only search history is real estate stuff.

I would rather MGoBlog not seek to unite me with big beautiful women of color, thank you. I don't think Brian is particularly adept at matchmaking.

Best attitude that I read so far. It takes time to migrate a considerably mid-range site like mgoblog. I will be waiting for late August and September to see how it reacts during those times when it used to crash. Formatting part is tough but it can be improved. I am looking for improvements by next summer. From my experience as a web developer, these things take time.

I do come here less often. I thinks it’s the new site and I’ve been loving the Wolverine Wire.

Way less, and this is the time of year I usually start itching for any college football content. The new site just lacks something, I can't put my finger on it but it's just not as interesting as it used to be.

I used to come here multiple times a day, now it's maybe once or twice a week.

I’d say I come here about the same, but I absolutely hate the new site.  I’ve been trying to be patient and give it an adjustment period, but recently I clicked the jump on an article to find that the only thing left to read was the comments.  That was my breaking point - I hate the redesign.

Much less now.  Used to check during the day numerous times on the app.  Now maybe once a day - if that.  Please bring back an app. I would be happy to pay.

Not as active board = less frequent visits. I also rarely post...not that I posted a ton before...but now I don't have much interest to. Hard to follow conversations/threads.

I also apparently have some OCD tendencies and the space of the gap between the main content and main site banner, beveled guilt button and site banner, and beveled guilt button and diary banner is all different and it drives me up a wall thinking how someone believes that's a normal way to design a site.

Not really ... check it daily for new content or interesting board postings just like before the change.  Much better format for scrolling on one's iPhone but on a desktop, laptop or even my iPad lot's of white space and advertising ... tougher to navigate on those devices but content is still good so I can deal with it.  We will see when the season gets in full swing if the meaty content with GIFs and video is easier / faster to view.  Jury is still out I guess, but I think that kind of content will be faster to view which (if so) will be a big improvement.

Nope... my visit frequency is the same. I probably spend less time on the site, but that’s mostly because there is less interesting/new content (including board posts).  Although this time of year we are usually neck deep in “discuss this” type posts, so maybe less board posts is a positive.

Nope, although I miss the days where there was more content as well as the old voting system/threads I still check in daily.  I participate less, but the state of football seems to have zapped the site authors' energy, which I totally get.

Frequency dropped about 75% due solely to no app.  I don’t care how mobile friendly the full website claims to be, it is way more cumbersome than the app was.  Biggest pet peeve...when I click “Read More” why in the world does it take me back to the top of the article?  Obviously I read to that point already.

No, but I agree that it wasn’t an upgrade for users. The modernized MGoBlog logo looks nice. The user interface sucks. I’d take the old version back in an instant.

Yes, but this is mostly correlated with the doldrums of the offseason, always the deadest and often the least pleasant time on the board to begin with.

There are some tertiary causes--other people are certainly posting less, which means less drive to check in and see what news is out there--but some (not all, probably) of this will be remedied simply by the resumption of daily news with the onset of camp and then the overpowering gravity of football season now not too many weeks away.

I'm waiting to see how the site feels when it's football season, but I confess I have no idea how it will play out. For example, the board may resume normal levels of activity... but then I might find it awkward to have threads buried off of the board so quickly with the smaller message board field.

Also, while it's clear that staff are putting work in to correct issues, it's an open question how many issues will be resolved by opening day. And improvement will probably slow down when the season gets here for obvious reasons. Certain features regarding the organization of comments and the ability to see which posts are new are pretty vital to the ease of holding long discussions that make this place enjoyable, and if they're not back by September 1, that's going to sting.

Information.  That's why I visit the site.    So even though the 3.0 rollout has not been optimal, I still frequently check the front page and board for information that I cannot get elsewhere.

Yes, I have been visiting less. A highly detailed and accurate analysis tells me that the decrease in my visits is 40% because of light/uninteresting content, 30% because I've got other things to do and 30% because of the post reboot wonkiness.

Less, although I still visit at least once a day.

I believe there are websites that track traffic over time for given sites.

I'd like to think that Brian and others are working behind the scenes to make the user interface a better experience.

Nature abhors a vacuum.  Michigan has a huge fan base.  At some point, if Brian decides this is not for him, someone else will fill the void. Personally, I'd hate for that to happen because Brian has busted his ass for a long time providing us with content, but it is his call.

A LOT less!!!!! I used to keep the page open all the time... but now things aren't the same.  And not to mention it's not mobile phone friendly!!!!

The current site version is just a placeholder for the most awesome MGoBlog ever to come. It's platform friendly and the dreaded ilk are still working on the amazing version as I type this. Rumor does have it though that the gnomes are threatening to strike, so we may need to wait until closer to football season for the usual underpants concessions because profits.

I actually come to the site more.  I am approaching 100 points so I want to see the site open up more for me. And, maybe I am a glutton for punishment.  Got 7 points to get me to 84 before the points broke again, now anticipating the fix.

Yes, I come here way less.  Everyone wanted a new site, well we got it. I was one that like the old site.  Appreciated being able to edit my comment.
