I'm sorry, but the Maize and Blue deli is simply not very good.
So I decided to give the Maize and Blue deli another try today, thinking that maybe I just hadn't ordered the right thing every other time I've been there. Ordered the #23 "Italian Style" which should be a no brainer great sandwich, but it wasn't. After eating there 6 times now, I've come to the conclusion that it just simply isn't a very good sandwich place. Fairly confident that I could buy some pre-sliced Oscar Meyer lunchmeat from Kroger and make a better sandwich than this place.
I find Zingerman's to be overpriced, but at least they know how to do Pastrami and Corned Beef correctly. I really have no idea why so many people defend Maize and Blue so vehemently.
Your thoughts?
I think someone should post a "vi vs. Emacs" topic just to make a trio.
will there ever be an easy-to-use editor?
pico/nano.
gedit is for the little kids in engin101
Then you switch to nano/vim for eecs280
No, I agree. I never really liked it when I was a student.
I know this is even more blasphemous, but my favorite sandwich place was "Taste Our Goods" - a little shop in the corner of Sparrow's Market in Kerrytown. Ironically across the street from Zingerman's.
Sadly it has since closed.
I have lived in a few cities including Boston and NY but I have not found a deli that compares to Zingerman's.
agree 100%!!! I live in Pensacola, Fl saw the man vs food challenge and decided to go there during a game day weeknd. We gave it two attempts on back to back days... very disappointing...
No bang for your buck.. Plus cheap meat...
:9
....strum an out of tune guitar with only 2 strings, you are bound to get a free sandwich just to get you to move somewhere else!
From the foodservice professionals standpoint, you went above and beyond trying the place 6 times with bad meals is enough, the place isn't for you! I won't go back after a 3rd. Looking at you Quizno's, taco Bob, Fazoli's, olive garden, shitty pizza place across town, chi-chi's (ooohhh market proved that), spoon deli (wooster, ohio) Cincinnati chili, Perkins restaurant & bakery, Bob Evans, Burger king( yaaaa- hemorrhaging market share) and you, you horrific excuse for an Italian eatery-- pizza hut. I'm a foody and the quality of standard restaurants out there is amaizingly low.
Congrats on your realization that for you, its just not worth it.
Blasphemy. Sheer blasphemy.
triple play reuben is amazing
Been 19 years and I still remember the Cindy's Daily. Roommate and I loved the place and at the time preferred it over Zingerman's. I ran errands for a law firm down town during school and always got to clean up leftover Zingerman's trays. Good, but so overpriced.
Live in Brighton and was happy when Amer's opened in Brighton, but that was short-lived.
Only negative of Maize and Blue was smelling like the place the rest of the day.
just go to subway or jimmy johns. simple, good, and cheap
Zingerman's is where the rich Communists in the Politburo get their sandwiches.
The rest of us go to the Meijer Cafe or Maize and Blue.
Blimpy Burger is living on reputation and faded memories. The last two meals I had there were so bad I can't imagine going back. Maize and Blue is the same way. I don't feel like they're doing anything special with their food.
As for your other three picks, I'd disagree on the order, but agree on the content. Zingerman's is a cut above everyone else. They get a bad rep for high prices, but the food is that good.
order the chicken shawarma there, u will be satisfied
those burgers r damn good
I've heard that Brandon Inge loved the M & B Deli . . . . or maybe that was Ryan Rayburn?
DiBella's off Main on Eisenhower south of campus is crazy underrated.
There needs to be a "Troof" option for comments like these. I clicked this thread for the purpose of saying this exact thing.
Agreed. DiBella's is very good.
Stand by your opinion like a man, strong and proud. Hopefully you got the response that you desired.
You're one of the most worthless posters on this board and you've picked crappy sandwiches to sample. Zingerman's is overpriced, overrated, and overhyped. If I wanted to eat bread with a side of meat I'd go to Subway. I'm not paying $18 for a freaking sandwich. Maize n Blue is affordable and good.
End of discussion, I don't care about any differing opinions because they're wrong.
If you are indeed the real Stephen Hawking (which I believe you are) I thought you were smarter than this.
Lived in A2 for 16 years as a kid, and never went to either, so I can't really weigh in on the conversation, only to say that, for me, one bad experience is plenty. I'm a foodie wannabe, and think I can cook better than most restaurants out there, except for the pain in the ass things to make, that I'll leave for the professionals, and thoroughly enjoy when I do go out to eat. Good Thai food being one of those things. Oh, and corned beef, once you've had really good corned beef, you'll never go back.
But the corned beef at The Stage in West Bloomfield is better, IMO.
I misread your OP title as "I'm sorry but the Maize and Blue devil is simply not very good." I assumed that Michigan had adopted a new mascot like Duke's blue devil, only he'd be wearing some maize, too. Now I can't get that image out of my mind.
Mentioned it, but there is a Bread Basket Deli on Carpenter Road (southeast corner of Ellsworth). The corned beef sandwiches are much better than Maize & Blue or Zingermans.
The also have the "Angel Sandwich" and if you can digest that bad boy in less than 20 minutes you get it free and your mug shot on the wall.
someone to ingest a large sandwich in 20 minutes or less, but to digest it as well, that's impressive.
Just how do they verify that it has actually been digested in that time?
when you finish ingesting and they hand you the marble
went there thinking I'd give it a shot, VERY expensive and noplace to sit. The sandwich was ok, it wasn't horrible, but like you said, some pre-slice deli meat would probably compare...just my personal opinion, as many things I like, certainly others do not. For my money and time, I always go to PIZZA BOB's on state street and Packard. Little hole in the wall type place with great sandwhiches. I like the Super on wheat, and the milkshakes are thick enough you probably need a spoon for the first fifteen minutes... Always good food, my kids love their pizza, the chuck's delight tuna is my wife's favorite. The Super is similar to an italian sandwhich with tiger sauce on it and baked in crunch to the bread...it's my regular stop through town.
I'm so mad.
I hate that Zingerman's and M&B has to be an either/or. The only two sandwiches I get at M&B are the #12 Where's Bo (Pastrami, Egg, Cobat Cheese on Challah) and the Who came first, wihch is #38 (chicken and egg with Swiss + Thousand Island), both are great sandwiches.
But... I also enjoy what Zingerman's has to offer... I just couldnt afford to eat there every day in college. And M&B is right on campus...
Also, second comment: Big shout out to Izzy's Hoagie Shop on West Stadium. The place is only open for lunch, full of locals, and really a nice phillycheesesteak...
Where's Bo is the #18.
