OT: What Other College Fight Songs do you find Catchy?

Submitted by WingsNWolverines on
The Victors will always be our favorite fight song and our only fight song but when it comes to college sports fight songs are what makes the collegiate world so exciting to watch and see on Saturdays. Are there any other schools fight songs that you find catchy to the ear? I personally like Purdue's and Wisconsin's. I also love the classics like Navy's "Anchors Away" and Army's "As the Army Goes Rolling Along."

I HATE to admit this, but my HS fight song is the same tune as Ohio's and from time to time I catch myself tapping my foot or whatnot when I hear it on the radio.  I feel dirty.

After the Victors, the three that stand out to me (i.e. I can immediately hum them without thinking) Rocky Top, USC, Texas.  The next tier (i.e. As soon as I hear it I recognize it) ND, LSU/Clemson.

I've always thought the Minnesota Rouser was catchy.  I believe it was used as background music on the old Prudential College Scoreboard show as well.

I find a few of them catchy and unfortunately find myself humming them without even realizing I'm doing it.  The hell if I'm going to admit to any of you which ones they are.  Needless to say, I have been slapped by my wife before for some of the fight songs I've accidently started humming...

Living here in Ohio, my kids high school had the Ohio fight song.  Of course, I always hear in my head and sing different words to the tune whenever I hear it....

Liquidate Ohio State and turn the Buckeyes blue.
They breed a lot of cattle in Columbus,
It looks just like a zoo.

Knock them off their ivory towers,
Send them crawling into the showers,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party school.

They say the girls who go to O.S.U.,
Are husband hunting dames,
They dig the jocks who got the killer instinct,
Not the boys with brains.

At Columbus you’re way ahead,
With straight A’s in Physical Ed,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party school.

Bust your guts for Tressel,
Move your butts for Tressel,

Liquidate Ohio State and turn the Buckeyes blue,
They breed a lot of cattle in Columbus,
It looks just like a zoo. Rah! Rah! Rah!

Knock them off their ivory towers,
Send them crawling into the showers,
Down with Ohio State,
It’s a know-nothing party schoooooooooool.

Across the Field and Buckeye Battle Cry are perfectly good fight songs; and like the Notre Dame Victory (Ha!) March, it will always be associated in my mind with, well, strong feelings.

The thing about The Ohio State University that really gets me is that while Michigan's The Victors is the greatest fight song in college football, Carmen Ohio is, I would confess, college football's best 'alma mater.'  Don't get me wrong; I love The Yellow and Blue.  But it's not very catchy, the lyrics don't jump off the page, and to be honest the tune for Carmen Ohio (which the Buckeyes ripped off from an old Methodist Hymnal tune called "Spanish Hymn") is more fun to sing.

Cie Grant, singing Carmen Ohio after the Buckeyes' National Championship, back home in  Columbus in January:

And the OSU band on a game day, with the Westminster chimes lead-in:

is actually a fight song as hard as it seems to believe that I can stand as for "Across The Field" I can NOT stand that song and "Hang on Sloppy"

Guess where Orton Hall got them?

From the "Songs of the Ohio State University" website:

This ballad [the song "Ohio State"] does mention two of the best known landmarks on the Ohio State campus. The chimes of Orton Hall and Mirror Lake. The chimes ring each quarter hour, using the Westminster chimes, and also chime the hour.

cf., Westminster Chimes:

Big Ben is part of what is formally the Palace of Westminster, better known as the Parliament buiding...

Welcome to MGoBlog and I'm so glad we could be of service to you in helping to explain the various historical references to be found on the lovely campus in Columbus, Ohio!

If Terelle Pryor wants to finally learn the words to Carmen Ohio, or if Urban Meyer wants lessons on collegiate history, just dial us here in the 734 area code!  O-H!

Several come to mind.

  1. ND - Only one I know some words to. I love Michigan's, but ND is the one that may beat it (at least in terms of familiarity.)
  2. On Wisconsin - The main part, as mentioned, is the basis for many HS fight songs.
  3. USC - I hated hearing this at the Rose Bowl, but it is a pretty epic fight song, and different in style from most others.
  4. Oklahoma - repetitive, but memorable.
  5. Clemson - love the trombone slide into "Let's go Tigers."
  6. Texas - actually think "Eyes of Texas" (I've been working on the railroad) is more memorable.
  7. Texas A&M - classic little brother fight song (see words) but for some reason the tune sticks.

Grew up in Michigan and played saxophone through junior high in public school system.  As part of the music "curriculum" they made us learn both the Michigan and Michigan State fight songs.   The Victors is obviously superior and near and dear to my heart as a grad, but barring a lobotomy or other brain trauma I will never forget the melody of the State fight song.  Not sure if that means I like it, but if honest, it is catchy in its own way.

BTW, apparently the name of the Michigan State fight song is....<drum roll>....The Michigan State Fight Song.

It would be easier for me to point out which ones I don't like, but I'll echo everyone else's sentiments that The Victors is clearly #1 but ND and Wisco have good ones.

Tangent: I'm pretty sure that both ND and MSU claim at a point in their pregame performances that their fight song is "the best in the land" or something to that effect. I like that ours is just announced as "The Victors," because people already know we have the best one, they don't need to be told.

Gotta love their fight song....

Hotty Totty, gosh almighty, who the hell are we?

Whim wham, flim flam, Ole Miss by damn!

Short, sweet, and to the point!

1.  The Victors by a huge margin.

2.  Boomer Sooner

3.  On, Wisconsin

I will give ND, Ohio, and UT honorable mention, though.  As for Sparty: puh-leeze.  It just isn't memorable.  I seriously wouldn't recognize their fight song if someone played it for me and didn't tell me whose it was.

Ever since I went to a Charlie Daniels concert in Memphis on the banks of the Mississippi I have loved "Rocky Top", Clemson's is a lot of fun, and while I'm biased I'm a big fan of Air Force's fight song.

MSU's fight song is catchy in the same way that "I Got A Feelin" is catchy. It's goddamn terrible, but at times I can't get it out of my head. I deal with it by singing (in my head) "victory for U of M."

Of course, nothing truly compares to The Victors.

the nauseating repetition of that USC drone of a song, whatever it is, you may want to take your own life.  It is abusive.  I never really truly hated USC until being there for a Rose Bowl.

had the ND fight song for fight songs. So. . . much as I would come to dislike ND, I cannot extirpate it from the old coco. . . nor can I forget Cathy Tierney, who was one of them but deflowered one of me. Excuse me while I reminisce. . .

They're not on tv much, but it's a good tune. "On Wisconsin" is great, but I don't like the way their band usually plays it: they cut off most of the notes instead of holding them. I'm also partial to Washington State's, because my high school used it.

Unfortunately, as a UM fan, I have heard USC's fight song too often.  It is still catchy though but not EPIC like UM's.  I agree that ND has a good fight song although I prefer to only hear it when they are playing Sparty.   I love FSU's chant.  When that is going strong it sends chills down your spine.   The most horrid of all fight songs is "Rocky Top" hands down!  I've been to a handful of UT games and the atmosphere was great.  The song totally represents the school but it has a short shelf-life.

My high school uses Notre Dame's, so I guess that. UT (Toledo) is actually really catch for a mac school. In the B1G I'd say Wisconsin and Northwestern's are pretty catch also.

I have to give props to FSU for having the #2 fight song in the land. The warchant gets annoying after midway through the 1st quarter but the song itself rocks. I can't get behind any of our rivals, so ND & the rest can kick it.
