OT: Gee pay raise....we should all be so fortunate
http://stateimpact.npr.org/ohio/2011/12/12/osu-president-e-gordon-gee-gets-a-160000-salary-bump/
Ohio State University’s Board of Trustees approved a 2 percent raise for university President E. Gordon Gee on Friday plus additional compensation.

Nobody is more deserving than that guy.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
I mean Osu is a top ten school "academically" in the world. Not to mention he has a wonderful system in place to monitor student athletes. #sarcasm
December 12th, 2011 at 2:09 PM ^
I don't think you need the #sarcasm.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:00 PM ^
it's not like he works for the Little Sisters of the Poor
December 12th, 2011 at 2:02 PM ^
I might be in the minority here, but assuming he's bringing in those donations and running the school better than expected, he should get paid for it. If Gee does his job well and remains happy there, it's good for everyone else at Ohio.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:11 PM ^
I begrudgingly agree; it' easy to quantify his success in these respects to this point, while quite difficult to know how detrimental his public handling of the recent mess may be to future fundraising/quantifiable benchmarks.
fucker is still a douchebag and has, at least in his recent 15 minutes, been an embarrassment to his institution/great representative of the osu we all know and love.

contrast between paragraphs one and two. I do the same thing - waffle between wordy and fuckin' profane.

I diagree. TROLLRLLLING!!!!
Brian, your self moderation system doesn't work, as most around here don't enjoy when people don't share their opinion. It is why so many post funny pictures of cats.

No cats...but how about a wolverine?

My problem is mostly who they screw with this, which is the students paying tuition. They will claim most of it is from donations and so on, but in the end it all will come back to the cost of tuition.
My other problem isn't him getting a bonus for doing better than expected. It's the actual amount of the bonus. About 17.5% of his actual salary, and he also gets a 2% raise besides. That $160,000 bonus seems excessive for what he has actually done.
December 12th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
The tuition thing is overblown, IMO. Ohio has a $4.5b budget, and Gee got $160k.
The other thing we don't know were his incentives. If he brought in $250m (or whatever a big amount would be for OSU, I really don't know) in donations last year, would you think he was worth the bonus? I'd bet a lot of money that their US News numbers are up, applications are up, ect. so maybe he's more deserving of his pay than his handling of the Tressel situation would imply.
December 12th, 2011 at 3:01 PM ^
your president a raise in the year when he makes your school a national laughingstock (see "hope he doesn't fire me" remark), when do you?
December 12th, 2011 at 2:03 PM ^
I want two fucking percent taken off my tuition.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:07 PM ^
$400+ lol I'm in the same boat as you
December 12th, 2011 at 2:18 PM ^
It's like $750 for me. I could buy a new suit instead of just getting new shirts/ties to make it look like I own more than one lol.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:45 PM ^
"I had a 2nd interview at this place. I don't think they wanted to hire me...I think they just wanted to see if I had 2 suits." - Hannibal Burress, a great stand-up who is on the verge of being really big
December 12th, 2011 at 3:12 PM ^
Wtf your paying oos tuition, yeah that blows
December 12th, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
good thing tressel didn't fire him
December 12th, 2011 at 2:06 PM ^
Well-played.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
I think that might be a little much. I hope Tressel doesn't fire him..
December 12th, 2011 at 2:09 PM ^
"plus addtional compensation" - Didn't know Gee was into getting tattoos
December 12th, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
Kickbacks from tattoo parlors and car dealerships?
December 12th, 2011 at 2:11 PM ^
1) OSU cheated for Tressel's entire tenure, won a NC and many (I don't want to look it up) B1G titles in football and has a top 10 basketball team
2) The ended up getting an even better coach after Tressel.
3) Their academics don't appear to be horrible, while being located in Ohio
4) His personal connections will prevent any real damage from the NCAA.
If you judge by results, he's pretty solid.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:45 PM ^
track record after like a year or two before I say he is a better coach than JT. I couldn't stand the vest...but he had a damn solid record at Ohio. Urban, on the other hand....Didn't do much at UF after his predecessor's class was gone. I'm not completely sold on Urban M just yet.
December 12th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
did win a national championship in 2008, his 4th year at Florida...so...yeah. You're right though, not everyone walks into a program with a legend like Chris Leak.
December 12th, 2011 at 8:35 PM ^
JT had a habit of "cheating" be it burying his head in the sand to get recruits or pointing them in the right direction, dude was dirty his record should be erased.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:41 PM ^
comes just a few years after getting hammered by the NCAA, having their coach being given a show-cause penalty, having multiple seasons vacated. The rich keep getting richer; it's who you know; etc. etc. Still think it's a waste of my tax dollars. Having sat in Hill Auditorium and Weigel in the last 2 months, I'd say that $160K (and more) would be much better spent on fine arts facilities at osu than bowties.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
and I'm all for people being able to get what they can, but if I were Gee I might think abuot saying, "hey, things didn't go so well this year, I'll forgo this pay raise."
December 12th, 2011 at 2:23 PM ^
OSU will just raise tuition...
Isn't part of the biggest job of the president to better the brand of Ohio State. Didn't the OSU brand take a hit this year? Aren't most universities claiming they are struggling financially? Why do presidents keep getting raises without the same reaction as CEO's who get raises while their company begins failing? Oh, because they can just raise tuition, no big deal because the money still comes in. Universities are quickly becoming America's greatest scam.
\unaware of OSU's current finacial well-being
\\just pissed off at tuition costs in general
PS. I actually read the article just now and they claim most of the raise comes from donors and not tax payers. That's ok though, I'm sure they'll still raise tuition 6% or more.
December 12th, 2011 at 2:49 PM ^
a good job for state government and get shitty or no raises. This guy does a shitty job for state government and gets a good raise. There's something wrong with this picture.
December 12th, 2011 at 3:01 PM ^
Maybe if you spent less time milking my tax dollars on Mgoblog you'd get a raise. Get back to work!
#OccupyStateEmployees

How much longer will # be relevant? I feel like a seventeen year old girl on twitter when I do it. Assuming people can understand what they read I see no point to pound it out. That's just me though.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:42 PM ^
As long as you don't use it in every post you write I don't see the problem with throwing in a hashtag every now and then.
To the OP--I would be happy to get a $1 raise in my hourly rate, and hopefully that can happen soon. I'm glad to see that my tax dollars are going to such a worthy cause.
December 12th, 2011 at 4:33 PM ^
You're not really THAT guy are you?
December 12th, 2011 at 4:34 PM ^
the lulz, you' missed it.
December 12th, 2011 at 3:01 PM ^
I did not know the student-athletes had the power to approve the Board's authorization of pay raises for university staff. Is there nothing they cannot do down there in Ohio? Wait...
December 12th, 2011 at 3:01 PM ^
is that Gee is an embarrassment to the school anywhere outside the state of Ohio, but that doesn't seem to matter to the trustees. He keeps the donations rolling in, and the school has improved academically (from 3d rate to 2d rate) under his watch, and that's enough for them. Hard to believe you could not find someone else who could do the same job financially and academically and not be a national joke. I love the bit about how he learned from his mistakes. This guy has been making mistakes whenever he touches the football program, dating back to his first tenure at the school when he called a tie with UM one of ohio's "greatest victories."
December 12th, 2011 at 3:08 PM ^
of the larger college cost bubble. Somehow it has to change.
December 12th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
Nobody works harder to cheat, ignore and basically flat out lie. here's to you Ohio. Keep pissing on the NCAA because they'll let you.
December 12th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
If Gordon Gee's friendship with Mark Emmert is the main factor that keeps THE Ohio State University from getting the punishment they truly deserve for their ten year pattern of NCAA violations, he is worth even more than they are paying him now.
December 12th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
His bosses love him for keeping everything limited to Tressel, his old football head coach loves him for making sure he got the golden handshake on his way out (Tressel), his new football head coach loves him for making sure he gets the golden handshake on the way in, the Governor and legislature of Ohio love him because he has pictures of the NCAA administrators in compromising positions, the alumni of TSIO must love him because he keeps raking in the cash, and so the whole state of Ohio loves Gee.....
Of course, to get to this point, he has sold his soul to this guy:
December 12th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
Yeah, I said it.
December 12th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
That counts for a lot.
