OT: Rumor: Mack Brown to Retire on Saturday
Via Jake Lebhan, reporter from Topeka, KS (580 WIBW):
@JakeLebahn: According to a source Texas Longhorn head coach Mack Brown will retire this Saturday after the game against Baylor.
Crazy offseason for coaches if true. Also, Mike Sherman at A&M may be on on his way out at College Station.

I wonder what the probability that Kevin Sumlin is a candidate for one or both of those positions is. I wouldn't mind facing a team who just lost its head coach.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:05 PM ^
Twitter is blowing up right now. Sumlin has apparently been offered the ASU spot according to ASU sources although sources at Houston say it's untrue.
Chris Petersen is apparently talking to UCLA and/or UNC (FWIW).
December 1st, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
If a chance to be head coach at Texas may possibly come up ASU will be waiting for an answer awhile.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:07 PM ^
I'll be surprised if Sumlin is coaching at Houston next year. His stock will never be higher and the time to leave will never be better. He's unfefeated this year, he's been there four years, and his star record-breaking QB is graduating.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
Too bad - Sumlin was my number one choice to take over at Minnesota. He was on Mason's staff for a couple of years, and I believe he was considered before Joel Maturi took the Kill shot.

I think that is interesting about Petersen talking to UNC. I was listening to SVP earlier today and he mentioned it was the best major program job vacancy out there right now. I don't really get that. SVP mentioned it was because of the great recruiting area and low expectations (given it is a basketball school). UNC hasn't really had a nationally relevant football program for quite some time. Seems to me that what Petersen did at Boise would warrant bigger and better than UNC.

I think he's had his offers, just has turned them down. I can think of two possibilities on why this year would be different. He feels he has a top-5 team and isn't going to a BCS bowl because of one loss and a small fan base, the tired of banging one's head against a brick wall theory. Or, he was waiting for this one team that may have had a legitimate chance at a national title. He's a coaching legend now and forever if he had won a national title at Boise State.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:35 PM ^
I have always been surprised that he hasn't left already. To make Boise State a nationally relevant program. If someone would have told me 15 years ago that a coach would come along and make Boise State a Top Ten team year-in-year-out, I would have thought they could have whatever coaching job they would want in the country.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
I've heard he has a daughter with significant health or developmental issues and has found a good treatment situation for her in Boise. Stability's important in that kind of situation.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
It was his son. He had a brain tumor. Here's the story about it.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
I hadn't heard that. This makes the UNC interest much more understandable. UNC and Duke Medical complexes are two of the best in the country. Duke, in particular, has an outstanding cancer center and its just a few miles from UNC's campus.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
As a surgeon at Duke, thanks for the props. Our brain tumor center is number 1 in the country. Gotta go - in the OR as we speak. Damn MGoBlog addiction...

You sir, are an inspiration to us all
December 1st, 2011 at 6:24 PM ^
I always admired you as a president, but this takes the cake.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
That was a great read.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:24 PM ^
There are rumors that UCLA has offered or is close to offering Peterson.
According to this article:Petersen's son actually was diagnosed with cancer when he was a one-year old, but has received treatment. There have been reports that the Boise doctor that treated Petersen's son has moved on to UCLA.http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/259719/20111201/head-coach-chris-peters…
December 1st, 2011 at 6:37 PM ^
Because every Boise St HC that has left has flamed out at their next stop. Petersen knows he has a good thing giong and why rock the boat?
December 1st, 2011 at 6:58 PM ^
Not saying he will leave. Just saying if he does, those would be the two reasons that could make this year different.
December 1st, 2011 at 9:04 PM ^
And by every, you mean just the previous two. Right?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:03 PM ^
Texas could hire tressel
December 1st, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
Crazy if true, because Muschamp was the heir apparent.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
I would love to see Muschamp bolt for UT. I don't think they would hire him though...
December 1st, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
And then Urban Meyer could head back to Florida. He said himself that Florida was his dream job. It just didn't work out because of his health issues. Ohio is left with Fickell! Works for me!
Edit: and to be clear, I am not afraid of Urban coaching at Ohio. I'm just saying it would be hilarious since all the Buckeyes blew off their loss to us and said everything was fine because they were going to get Urban and how he is an even better coach than Tressel and how they would dominate us for another 10 years with him. I realize this WON'T happen, but it would be quite comical if it did.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:40 PM ^
I heard on the local Portland radio sports stations (sorry no link) that the health deal was just Meyer's way out. They were stating that Urban read the writing on the wall and saw that all of his successful cordinators had been leaving for other schools and knew that Florida was headed for a tail spin, so he split before it totally collapsed.
Interesting if nothing more, and we will never know for sure.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:50 PM ^
Muschamp has to be pissed that he took the Florida job now. All he had to do was wait another year. It would be really funny if he bolted for Texas, though. It would be John Brantley IV in reverse, but as a coach and not a player.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:51 PM ^
It would basically be Lane Kiffin all over again.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
Hopefully the team will play inspired and knock off Baylor. Michigan needs all the help it can get for a BCS game
December 1st, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
It doesn't need that much help - all it needs, most likely, is for LSU to beat Georgia.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:07 PM ^
(I won't even ask about Mike Leach.) lulz.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
One rumor I've hear was Saban to UT for a contract that makes Urban's seem like chump change. Not saying I believe it, but it does seem to hold more water now.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
yeah that really makes sense... after a 60 year old coach born on august 27, 1951 retires, they would hire a 60 year old coach born october 31, 1951
December 1st, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
They're the same age? Mack looks 5-10 years older than Saban.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
Botox is a helluva drug.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
The souls of castaway athletes who can't hack it are a helluva drug.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
Saban already makes more that Urban will at OSU.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:07 PM ^
Mike Sherman being fired is not suprising, but if true Mack Brown retiring would be.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
Has a team ever lost as many 1 possession games as A&M did this year? They were a few plays away from actually having a good season.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:40 PM ^
As a Packer fan, Mike Sherman losing close games on poor end of game coaching is shocking, shocking!
December 1st, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
Not to mention doing jack in the postseason? Thompson and McCarthy uber alles.

December 1st, 2011 at 8:22 PM ^
We could have been about 11-1 that year. We also could have been 4-7. Lost to ND by 7, lost to Wisconsin and Minnesota by 3, lost to Ohio (aargh) and Nebraska (pitch it to Breaston!) by 4 each. Also beat MSU in EL by 3 in OT, beat Penn State on the pass to Manningham, and beat Iowa in OT by 3. Watching the Alamo Bowl with the flu and a 103 degree fever seemed appropriate; that's how I felt all season.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:49 PM ^
I don't think A&M can afford to fire Sherman. They just paid a lot of money buying out Franchione. Furthermore, A&M has a top ten class coming in now. I also think firing your coach before the first season in the SEC is not very smart.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
Don't forget all the money they're losing/paying to get out of the Big 12.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
He ran a pretty clean program at Texas, with gigantic expectations, and an impatient fan base.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:32 PM ^
Get a couple drinks in her and Colt McCoy's wife could poke some holes in the pretty clean program theory.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:36 PM ^
I don't even know what this means, but I wish I did. Sounds amazing.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
Since Colt's wife (fiancee?) is pretty attractive, can you enlighten us as to some of the rumors swirling about an unclean program?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
It's been a few months and nothing so I assume Colt and the Texas folks told her to STFU.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
I'm not exactly sure, but I think this might be it:
