Just how much of a sure thing is Urban to OSU?
I don't want to be that guy, but just how much of a sure thing is it that Urban will be the next coach of Ohio? It's feasible that the guy just didn't want to be the center of attention by calling the game and asked for it off accordingly, but it seems like it's a foregone conclusion (based on all the media talk) that he'll be there next fall. Is this legit or is it another Harbaugh to Michigan situation?
Great win today. I could get used to this!

I'm headed to Koger instead of Meyer.

At this point with the way things have been reported id be shocked if he wasnt their coach within the next two weeks
November 26th, 2011 at 9:11 PM ^
I've heard tons of reasons why he took the game off, one of which was that he just wanted to spend the Thanksgiving weekend with his family. Which isn't entirely crazy. Another reason was that his father passed away. I have done no further research into either of these rumors and consider them just that - rumors. No one knows the real reason.
I think Meyer will be announced as the head coach 'officially' at the half in the Ohio/Duke basketball game, but this same type of publicity and certainty was driven by the media when Les Miles was Michigan's emminent head coach after Carr retired as well.
EDIT: If I were Meyer, I would wait until the NCAA makes its ruling on punishment. Now I'm sure with his connections that he would be able to put out feelers on a potential punishment. Meyer is a good coach who's "got the itch" to get back into football. Ohio would be a great place for him. The rumors below about ND firing Kelly and hiring Meyer are as interesting as they are ridiculous. That's not to say it's outside of the realm of possibility for ND [see: Weis contract extension] and I would consider Meyer to be just as interested in that offer as an Ohio offer.

those bowl practices are critical. its like 18 free practices that non-bowl teams dont get.
Never forfeit those without reason, and I dont think imposing a ban on themselves will have much effect on their punishment
November 26th, 2011 at 8:54 PM ^
I think it's possibly definitely maybe an absolute sure thing.

November 26th, 2011 at 8:58 PM ^
Considering he wasn't broadcasting today, I'm pretty sure it may, potentially, probably, kinda, maybe happen. I think if it does happen, the first thing tsiO will have to do is get a good criminal attorney on the football staff (based on Florida's arrest record under Meyer). I also think his hiring isn't going to change much. Florida absolutely stunk on offense once Dan Mullen left to coach at Miss. St. and the defense dropped off once Charlie Strong and Greg Mattison both left.
November 26th, 2011 at 8:59 PM ^
I live in columbus, and apparently there has been talk (according to 97.1 the fan) of notre dame firring brian kelly and Meyer going to coach there since ohio has not yet recieved punishment for their faliure to monitor charge.

14 units of sure thing. Adjusted for inflation, of course.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:01 PM ^
think he has taken it yet. Now on Dec. 10th when the NCAA rules on the whole scandal we will see. But if they get USC treatment like 30 lost schollies and 2 or 3 year bowl ban I doubt he takes the job. I think he waits till that decision before his decision imo.
November 27th, 2011 at 9:01 AM ^
Agreed
November 26th, 2011 at 9:01 PM ^
Wouldn't you just love it, if Desmond Howard went on ESPN and "broke the news" like herbstreit did back in 2007, and it ruins the whole thing?
November 26th, 2011 at 9:09 PM ^
If this happened and MSU loses to Wisky and ends up in the Cap One bowl below us, I will piss myself with glee.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:10 PM ^
...but unlike Les Miles in 2007, Urban's not currently coaching another team, so I'm not sure what it is Desmond would be ruining.
November 26th, 2011 at 10:08 PM ^
I think the next time Chris Speilman does a UofM game, I want Desmond in the booth with him. Yeah, Speilman is fair, Ok, not bad, blah, blah, blah...... If I am going to get stuck with some Ohio alum doing the booth for a UofM football game, I want our Heisman guy next to him telling him to STFU Chris, when he stains himself, talking about Urban, Fickell, Miller, etc...I know he is trying not to be a homer, but you and I know, he is a cooler pooper just like the rest of them.....
Ohio.......beaten.....

What about luke fickell?!
November 26th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
"What about Luke Fickell?" pretty much sums up what Ohio's fans are thinking, just without the obsecenities, righteous indignation and Skoal stains.
November 26th, 2011 at 10:53 PM ^
John Cooper thing going for him. With all Ohio's legal bills Luke's low salary could defray their unexpected costs.
November 26th, 2011 at 11:43 PM ^
Fickel is Einhorn! Einhorn is Fickel!
November 26th, 2011 at 9:03 PM ^
I don't think Meyer will sign on until there's clarity on the FTM punishment. Either they hold off on an announcement until the NCAA hands down its sentence or they announce him as coach but it's conditional.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:04 PM ^
not doing our game just so people know also he buried his dad this week and the short week with Thanksgiving plus not wanting to answer all these questions about the job could have played a role also. Doesnt mean he took the job or wants it.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:13 PM ^
The report I don't buy is that Fickle will be retained on the staff with a new head coach. If Meyer, or anyone else is hired, I would think the last person they would want hanging around is the previous head coach. Keeping a position coach or two, I can see. But if I'm Meyer, no way do I take the job with Fickle still around: there's just too great a risk of player and team disunity with that scenario. If Ohio goes for that, bully for them, but I wouldn't expect that to work out well.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
My question is, after being treated the way he has, why the hell would Fickel want to stay? Even Spielman made a comment during the game on how he seems fed up...

The vest and his brother were responsible for the majority of the recruiting. The brother is still there coaching alongside the brah (Fickell).

November 26th, 2011 at 9:16 PM ^
This quote by Eddie George says about as much about the situation as anything:
"I think it's a done deal," George said, after watching the Buckeyes lose to the No. 15 Wolverines 40-34 at the Big House. "I think the signs are there and it's definitely going to happen. I think he's the perfect fit. He's a coach that wants to be at Ohio State and has ties to Ohio State. He said Ohio State is his dream job."
The only signs that are there are that he'd be a great fit. The rest is just conjecture. This just reeks of Harbaugh to Michigan for me
November 26th, 2011 at 10:08 PM ^
If true, this is like the third school he's described as a "dream job." He left one at the alter (ND), and the other before the bottom fell out. Although he is 6-7 years older, Hoke will be at Michigan longer than Urban will be at Ohio.
November 26th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
What does Urban's wife and family think?
"Yeah, go ahead, Urban. Heart attacks are way overhyped."
I'm sure Ohio would love to have him. But I think that there's a chance that Urban turns it down.
November 26th, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
I thought I read somewhere this week that Urban has said he would only coach again if it was at OSU, ND, or Michigan... If I'm remembering that correctly (and I know it was at least something like that) then it sounds like it's more of a dream situation or dream platform than a specific dream job. Hoke, on the other hand, would've walked to Michigan.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:19 PM ^
per ESPN:
A person familiar with the situation said Meyer has already offered two of his former assistants -- Florida linebackers coach/special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin and strength and conditioning coordinator Mickey Marotti -- a chance to join his staff at Ohio State.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:20 PM ^
Spielman all but let the cat out of the bag today when he said of Luke Fickell: "Maybe he'll stay on [the staff] with Urban. Who knows?"
November 26th, 2011 at 9:22 PM ^
some team in the pros offer him a HC gig ? Didn't think so. Meyer to OSU and the Big Ten honesty to the dumpster.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:26 PM ^
Whatever the odds were before, they just got a notch better when Miller spiked on 3rd and 6.

<br>Today --> go blue!
November 26th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
Only time will tell. It still pisses me off that they cheat for 10 years and the "penalty" is getting "the best coach available". Again, not sure how it will all work out but you have to admit he is a damn good coach.
November 26th, 2011 at 9:50 PM ^
but he is a good coach...kind of going back to 10 year war.... two Ohio guys going at it...only difference, one did not work for the other on staff...but Mattison can be the link to both. . Go Blue!
November 26th, 2011 at 9:48 PM ^
Ohio will ignore the job posting law...because that is what it does...will claim no need to post.
Announcement will come tomorrow or Monday to allow him to start calling recruits "legally."
November 26th, 2011 at 9:54 PM ^
That is all.
November 26th, 2011 at 10:09 PM ^
As long as we go 8-2 I am down with this war thing.
