Calling Out the Defenders of Rodriguez

Submitted by The Barking Sp… on
It’s a new day, and time for a new “Blog.” Well, I saw so much anger and frustration come out with Barking Sphincter Blog I that I decided to stay on topic and continue in my vein of axing just why the hell so many people think Rodriguez should be given so many free passes. But I’m not going to concentrate on Rodriguez here—I’m going to call out the Defenders of the Rod with this one. The angst UM fans are feeling is polluting the intranets. The Defenders of the Rod (TDoR) come out enforce to rail at anyone who questions not just Rodriguez, but the state of UM football and recruiting. A guy on a premium pay site axes something like, “Hey, who we gonna go after on defense? A lot of highly-ranked defensive recruits are off the board.” WHAMMO. Within minutes this post is swarmed upon as if it was dollar-days at a downriver Wal Mart and Cheeze Whiz was on special. The guy is called a “Chicken Little” a “Debbie Downer” a “Closet Sparty” or is barraged with sarcastic bullshit like, “Hey you’re right. Maybe Michigan should just give up football.” All that ridiculousness aside, the worst part is when the TDoR start justifying 3-9 and why it happened. I guess the worst record in the history of the program will do that to an emotionally fragile fan base whose identity is based in no small part on the successes and failures of the Wolverines. But it does beg the question: How does a legitimate query about THIS year’s recruiting turn into a self-pitying justification party about the PREVIOUS season? If the TDoR want to put 3-9 behind them, or tell others to do so, why are they always the first ones to bring it up? Take a look at my first blog. I had the vultures all over that post screaming like little girls at a Jonas Brothers concert, and about all they could spit out was “3-9! 3-9! Cupboard bare! Lloyd Bad Man leave no players!” Well, if 3-9 hurts recruiting so badly, how’s come Rich Rod landed some pretty good talent as the season wore on, and did so even after it ended? The dude blew a 40-year streak of non-losing seasons, crashed and burned a 33-year bowl streak, and really good players still signed on. But THIS year, it’s different. Even after bringing a big time defensive coordinator on board in Greg Robinson. THIS year, 3-9 matters. Gone are the cries of “Yowza! 3-9 and we can still have a top 10 class? We are the ballz!” Gone are the cries of “THIS is gonna be the big year of turnaround! 2009—smokin, baby!” Those rallying shouts have been replaced by “I’m thinking that by 2011 we should be really good.” Bravado moving forward has been replaced by backpedalling and reminding everyone that our poor, young new coach was saddled by horrible players out to get him, Lloyd Carr lurking in the shadows with his non-support or super-secret coven of anti-Rodriguez co-conspirators, and a Michigan Media throwing its full support behind the bible-thumping Prophet of Lansing, Mark Dantonio. And with all that back pedaling comes the revealing of a very confidence-challenged fan base worried about Michigan falling off the map as so many other Big Timers have. The UM fan base, which never saw a precipitous fall as even remotely possible before 3-9, reels from it and vehemently pounces on anyone who dares question whether Rich Rodriguez can get things back in order. Gone is civil discourse. Gone is acceptance, and discussion with those of differing opinions. These so-called fans, who claim to support a great university known for tolerance and open-mindedness are in stark, dark contrast to the image of Michigan. Many claim to be graduates of the school; to that I say “Bullshit.” Neither their writing, their use of the English language, nor their ignorant closed-mindedness and lack of intelligent conversation speaks to being a graduate of such a great institution of higher learning. And this is no more proudly on display than when a recruit backs out on a commitment to UM or elects to go elsewhere if the fan base feels they were somehow “led on” by a recruit. Oh, that kid is in for some serious bashing. I remember the backlash against last year’s batch of decommits. Kevin Newsome, Shavodrick Beaver, and all the rest were creamed, called liars, their integrity was challenged, their families were insulted, and all because they simply changed their minds. Often, if not every time, the UM coaching staff had cooled on the kid and the decommit was more of a suggestion to him rather than the recruit just flipping. But no matter; these decommitments evoked a reaction that can not be described as anything but visceral. And all without ANY knowledge of the situation or the recruit in question. The really sad part was that type of reaction came from the majority, not the crazy marginalized sector, as is usually the case with this type of Mob Rule. So it stands to reason that we now see these angry protestations against those who are, very legitimately, wondering about the status of this once-proud program. I say again: Michigan State is winning a cultural war with UM in the state of Michigan. MSU has “perception” on its side in a big way. Acknowledge it and fight it, or lose 40 years of goodwill and dominance in your own back yard. But again, to accept the challenge offered by Mr. Michigan is Greener means a wave of Maize Ragers raining down on you with the kind of contempt usually reserved for baby seal clubbers or soccer moms. How long will this go on? Is it true that winning will cure everything? It remains to be seen if Rodriguez will build a winner—how much time does he have? and it remains to be seen—if he has time and does it—whether the “I told you so” crowd will welcome back their fellow UM supporters who, pretty much objectively, have done nothing more than voice warranted concerns. Have a great weekend people! GO BLUE!

You're going to come with real names? What kind of freak are you? Have you no sense of decency, sir? (I forget the rest)--I sure hope I never meet you in person--or better yet--you had better hope I never meet you in person. And yes, that IS a threat.

I think that was a moderator move. Probably pretty sad that one-time fun guys at the WLA have turned into such screaming bitches--and liars. But such as it is, you'll LOVE my next blog! I'm gonna shoot for 5000 views in 8 hours.

Calling Out the Defenders of Karl Marx Why anyone would want to take economic advice from a man who was a dunce in his own personal finances is beyond me. Asking a man who foolishly squanders away all his money for economic advice seems counterproductive. Anyways, why do people consider this man a genius, how is his book Das Kapital worthwhile? In his book he makes a number of predictions, about all of which were wrong. -Workers in capitalist countries did not see their wages decline in the 1900's, in fact workers in capitalist countries gained the highest standard of living in the world. -Workers in capitalist countries did not see longer and longer hours as the 1900's progressed, but actually had shorter and shorter hours, less than in the communist countries. -The communist revolution did not start in Industrialized England with factory workers burning down everything, it started in developing Russia due to a war, near-famine, and an incompetent monarchy. And finally, the old Soviet Bloc chose capitalism after they experienced the failures of communism for years. Sort of like the American colonists adopted a form of communism and switched after it failed miserably. Sure capitalism had some problems, that have been improved on over the years, but those pale in comparison to the problems that real world countries experienced under communism.

Yes. I am a defender of RR. You sir, are attacking the coach of my favorite team. I am here to defend him. "How does a legitimate query about THIS year’s recruiting turn into a self-pitying justification party about the PREVIOUS season? If the TDoR want to put 3-9 behind them, or tell others to do so, why are they always the first ones to bring it up?" By attacking our coach, you are putting us on the defensive. All of us have different ways of playing verbal defense, and we have nothing but reality to describe why we think we're right. By attacking us, YOU are the one that won't let us leave the awful season behind. You are no better than the moron who keeps posting Nebraska vs. Michigan highlights. Would you rather the UM fans talk about how well Tebow did last year to defend RR? Is it so stupid to site what has taken place? By defending our coach, we are not throwing a "self-justification party." In fact we are trying to draw the picture that is backed up by history. Fact: RR's new teams struggle with the offense and are bad in their first year. Fact: In year two under RR, his teams start to get it and start to churn tons of yards on the ground and in the air, resulting in a dramatically better record. I realize you already know this, but if you doubt - just use google and look at every place RR has coached. Why do you think Rivals & Scout give RR an "A" for coaching? These are the same people you trust to rate players, but you don't trust their judgement of coaches? Do you realize that this guy invented a version of the spread that is taking college football by storm? Over half of the teams in Div. 1 run a version of his offense. Do you realize that this offense is as innovative as the run-and-shoot, the single-wing, and the triple-option? A version of his offense has now made it into the NFL, and it will spread there too (no pun intended). When historians write about advancements in the schematics of American football, they will mention our coach. I know you claim to be a Michigan fan, but your actions are right in line with all the trolls on the internet. As soon as your actions start to look like a real fan, you will cease to be a troll in my book. However, everything you write is pretty much what one can read every day at the freep. Can you blame us for thinking you are the same? Trolls usually claim that RR was only good in the Big East after three teams left. This is far from the truth. They also spout out about how Pat White made RR, and he is nothing without him. Forget all the other years/players RR has coached, only the ones with Pat White are relevant. You are saying all the right things, like a good troll does. I even saw you post the word "Wal-mart" and that is a dead givaway. In summary, I am a proud defender of RR, and I will defend UM coaches until the day I die. I am a true fan, I love the team, the university, and the culture. There are not many things more amazing than going to a game in the Big House. You will never change my mind about any of that, and it's pretty funny that you think you can make haters out of the fans here.

All i read was "why is everyone giving RR a free pass?". I don't think many people are. But it is July 2nd and not as many fans are as pissed off as they were in October. Yes RichRod had a bad year last year (horribly bad) but what do you want him to do right now? He can't win any games until September. Just relax. You know that these posts are going to piss a lot of people off so why post them?

But I do have to axe ya: Are fans who question Rodriguez's potential for success and challenging him now supposed to just not say anything at all? This is a climate of football being a 365, 24/7 convrsation. You are kind of insinuating that only those who are either positive or "wait and see" should speak up.

July 3rd, 2009 at 1:18 PM ^

I don't know if there is an answer for this, but just another question to ask: What do fans who question Rodriguez's potential for success and challenging him now want? Whether you like him or are questioning him, no one will be able to draw definitive conclusions until after the 2010 season at the earliest. This goes for TDoR as well, it's just that you seem to be lumping anyone who wants to wait and see in with that group and call them all kool-aid drinkers. Saying that RichRod will fail because his recruiting class in only ranked in the teens, while not 100% disprovable, is not certain and ignores the many points of evidence suggesting that he will succeed. No one will know with certainty which one is right until the team gets chance to show it on the field. And, if you've paid attention to the board for a while, you've noticed anyone who is equally optimistic as you are pessimistic gets brought back to reality pretty fast as well. Any reaction besides "wait and see" is equally disprovable and knee-jerk.

The Barking Sp…

July 3rd, 2009 at 3:01 PM ^

Well, let me just say that I don't mean to lump the average "wait and see" guy in with "the rest." When I say "Kool Aid Drinker" I mean the guys who want to jump down your throat when you just even question him--as my first blog did. I passed no judgment; I just relayed facts about the recruits that came straight from Scout. I didn't pronounce, or predict, failure. And I don't think questioning is the same thing as saying "This is a disaster." I have an incendiary way with words, admittedly, but I think Blog 1 was fairly even handed. This one could rightly be called a silly firebomb, I'll give ya that. As for the 2010 recruiting class, I'll just have to part ways with you and say that I believe it needs to finish with a fluorish as a cap to a season that sees great improvement and a bowl game. What that means, even a recruiting geek like myself cannot definitively say, but I'd like to see it at least hovering around Top 10-15 come Feb 6. I do think Rodriguez and Barwis are good with player development and finding the right guys for the right, er, "slots" on the field. But I also believe there needs to be talent far above what he had to work with at WVU. I also believed, when he took the job, that he felt the same way--he'd snag higher rated talent and better depth at UM. I'd readily admit that he has done that--but I still see a very uphill battle looming. See now? I'm totally refuting myself--that's why I like the sane replies to my insane posts.

I've read the post, these comments and BS's responses, and it boils down to this: BS doesn't like what he sees from RR. Totally valid opinion and he's entitled to it. But I think what's pissing people off is that he's basing his pessimism not just on 3-9, but on some unsupported innuendo and hyperbole. Anyone who disagrees with him is drinking RR Kool-Aid. What he seems to ignore is that RR has a proven track record of steady improvement. So what is the "evidence to the contrary?" He has not done that here yet, but he has been here for one year. BS will have to forgive me, and the rest of the fan base, for not jumping off a ledge because of one year (which, admittedly, was tough to endure.) He also seems to have a problem with us "hoping" things will get better. Well, like opinions, there's informed hope and uninformed hope. If RR was a rookie coach with no track record, it would be unreasonable hope. But there's a clear pattern here, and it's resonable to think it will happen again. If it doesn't, then he will have failed. Jumping up and down like a meth monkey after one year isn't helpful and makes you look like a front-running, good-time Charlie. You compound the issue when you can't present facts to back up your opinions and use weasel words.

The Barking Sp…

July 2nd, 2009 at 12:46 PM ^

Look, man, I am basing my opinion--which I will label as "I'm just not so sure this is gonna work"--on what I've seen since the Cirque Du Rodrguez came to town. That isn't hyperbole; that isn't innuendo (an innuendo is an Italian enema hahahLOLZ). It's pretty much just observing Rich Rod being Rich Rod. ***On a side note, I wonder what people would think of him if he hadn't brought Barwis along?*** Now I know you have probably just finished up your first semester at college, taken Critical Thinking or Logic 101 and now want to use some official sounding terms such as "weasel words" and "meth monkey." But lemme tell ya: I used facts in my first two blogs. Nothing was made up. Rodriguez has screwed the pooch in many ways since taking this job. He has been given a free pass by the militant arm of the UM fan base (here's a strawman for ya: I believe that there is a silent majority who are about as thrilled with him as I am, even if they use "weasel words" such as "Welp, he's mah coach and Ah gotta suppooort him"). I'm voicing concerns and I do it well, write well, lay out a very sound argument, and you guys, the rabid message board mafiosi, take it personally. I get that, and couldn't care less.

I'm quite older than you think. I graudated in the mid-'90s (yes, I took a critical thinking class-GUILTY! Now stop before I break out the Venn diagrams and truth tables) and will soon be in grad school. I'm not saying you're making things up. I'm just trying to understand how you can declare failure already. You've talked about people's misplaced hopes despite "evidence to the contrary" but haven't really listed any other than 3-9. I mean, if you just don't like the cut of his jib, that's fine. Just say so. Sometimes, I find myself despising people in the public sphere for no good reason. They just rub me the wrong way. Just stop pretending your opinion is based on, you know, any kind of research or deep thought. Also, you just cannot expect a fan base, militant or casual, to bail on a college coach after 1 year. If that's "defending" him, then so be it. We're FANS of Michigan football. We WANT to see him do well. As I stated before, the "hope" is not really misplaced, if you look at RR's record. BTW: I ripped off "meth monkey" from a cop friend of mine.

I haven't "declared failure." I've declared "a guy making $2.8 mill per year that everyone thinks is gonna be the second coming of Popiel's Pocket Fisherman is open to some scrutiny--and serious scrutiny after a year that would make a George Bush presidency look almost worth remembering."

Nobody is saying that he isn't open to scrutiny. Nobody is saying that he is guaranteed to be successful. What everybody is saying is that we want to wait (at least) one more year before we join you in your dour outlook on Rodriguez's chances of success.

I graduated from the U and reject the premise that people who haven't gone to school here can't be legitimate fans. I was a fan of Michigan when I was 12, but I hadn't gone to the school. Michigan football is not an exclusive family. We have a great tradition and it is only natural for people to love watching the team succeed. The more the merrier.

TBS, perhaps you should step away from the computer for awhile, or at least step away from those premium pay site boards. Go outside and get a breath of fresh air or something, because this is unhealthy. I am a defender of Rich Rodriguez. Why? Well, because what choice do I have, really? He's in his second year of coaching at M, and even if he's a horrible coach (which I don't grant), there's no way he's going anywhere for awhile. I may as well enjoy every minute of The Rich Rodriguez Experience, because for better or worse, for the next few years: The Rich Rodriguez Experience == Michigan Football I want to enjoy Michigan Football. Therefore, I want to enjoy Coach Rodriguez. There is no way around this. If you're right about RichRod being horrible, then I fail to see the point in bringing that up now. That will only make watching Michigan football less fun, which I'm not interested in doing. Again, go outside or something. You've lost perspective.

I like how you take a handful of reactionaries and conflate it with every UM fan or Rich Rod supporter. This entire concept you've pulled out of your ass, here, "TDoR", is a bogus stereotype. It only exists in feeble minds such as yours, handicapped by reductionistic thinking that have not caught up to the post-modern understanding of reality. It seems you categorize yourself in this group: "UM supporters who, pretty much objectively, have done nothing more than voice warranted concerns." And this, I presume, is your "objective" concern: "Within minutes this post is swarmed upon as if it was dollar-days at a downriver Wal Mart and Cheeze Whiz was on special." You are right about one thing. The original entry is a Wal Mart and its content is about as substantive as Cheez Whiz.

Dear Barking Sphincter, Hello, guy. It has been some time since we last spoke, you and I. However, dearest cunt rag, the current time and place seem as good as any to rekindle our previously distant dialog. You, sir, are a gaping black butthole, a human sinkhole of ignorance. But, I digress. Let's embrace the facts as if they were woman of the night, the brand of street walking whore with which you are surely acquainted with. First, there is no way on God's green earth that you retain any sort of legal counsel. The court appointed stooge that looked over your fifth dewey and the clowntown that helped both your first and second wife divorce you, they, well, they aren't real lawyers. And, let's be honest, searching for your name and e-mail address on Google isn't a legal violation of any sort. We're not harassing you; frankly, I think I speak for almost everyone when I say that it wouldn't be a bad thing if you sort of just stopped posting and, you know, went and did something else with your time. Threatening to "sue" someone over the Internet is incredibly cowardly. Second, you're a god damned psychotic mess. Writing this post puts me in marginal peril. Please don't make a skin suit out of me or use my hacked up body for pizza toppings. Remember when you posted on the WLA obsessively, then disappeared, then re-appeared only to - ironically enough - make fun of someone's grammatical prowess? You're like a grown as man who sells real estate, or something. Shouldn't you be off doing that? I mean, I've heard the market for trailer park parcels is jumpin' right now. Time is money. Third, what's the deal with the Myspace account, linked to your e-mail address, that says you're a 17 year old female? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but that's some creepy ass shit right there. In the words of Spoony Love, what's really going on here? Hopefully this isn't a situation apropos of the Hansenator. To conclude, come the fuck on. You create a diary which is clearly aimed at baiting the majority of the readers here, and then you get super defensive and turn into a babby. That's stupid. I get it, you're a bored, lonely middle-aged man. Irrespective of all that, what's the point of starting shit with people who happen to be optimistic? Call it what you want, but sports teams are an escape from reality. Reality sucks; we'd like to think that our sports teams don't. Take your cognitive and emotional inadequacies elsewhere, please.

Wow, you say "damned psychotic mess" as if it's a bad thing. And threatening to sue someone over things said on the internet is so "cowardly"--well, I guess, because divulging someone else's private information on a message board is so Man Man MANLY, right? You kids at the WLA are just a bunch of funny lil mensches, you! Hypocrisy much?

I don't think using Google is either manly on "non-manly," so to speak. Also, what does this have to do with hypocrisy? If anything, this is what you should have expected. You(the metaphorical, second person "you") throw shit, we take the bait, the entire ordeal turns into a hot mess.
