Rodriguez available to caddie

Former West Virginia coach on bag for friend at Greenbrier Classic Monday

By Jim Workman
Assistant Managing Editor

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — He may be out of work until his television career as a football analyst with CBS Sports begins this fall.

But former West Virginia University and University of Michigan head football coach Rich Rodriguez knows how to spend his idle time.

He’s in town for The Greenbrier Classic.

Monday, he actually caddied for his friend Dave Alvarez in a Pro-Am golf event on The Old White TPC.

“Some of my good buddies knew that I needed work,” he said with a grin. “I work pretty cheap right now.

“I don’t know how I’ll do (as a caddie),” he said just before the round began. “I’m sweating already. I’ll probably get fired after about six holes.

“I had a chance to come down here for a couple of days. I’m getting ready to go to Oklahoma to do a TV shoot with (Sooners head football coach) Bob Stoops. I wanted to be around another day and see the facility and hang out with my friends.

“It's going to be fun.”

But your whole train of posting in this thread is the most laughable thing ever. You of all people complaining a guy who's done so much for the University can't get a little basic respect, from a guy who ROASTED Rich all last season, craps on Lloyd every chance you get, and was negative on Hoke before he even did anything....and is generally negative on pretty much every subject that comes up.....well, the hypocrisy would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Maybe the board tends to be in lock-step a little too much. But it's better than being contrarian to everything, just to do so.

I mean you, as a Rich Rod defender, is complete bunk. I was far kinder to him than you when he was here, and probably even took you to task for it. I've never started a "Rich sucks" rant...I just get sick of revisionist history in people's hurt memories, and their invariable excuses for what went wrong always involving a comparison (and blame) to some coach before or after him, having to tear down others to make Rich look good. The Drew Sharp of MGoBlog calling MGoShoe a Nazi, even tongue in cheek, is hilarious in it's utter ridiculousness. I'd rather be an elitist than just a bitter bitter human being.

So tell me what you think of your brethren's fondness of saying that Carr didn't REALLY go 1-6 vs. Tressel because there were shady car deals and tattoo parlor funny business going down.

That is the very definition of revisionist history in hurt memories.

M-Wolverine has the highest point total of anyone not named Brian. If you're going to deny he's a respected poster, you're veering into completely subjective territory.

However, at one point Tater had a gazillion points and he's one of the least respected posters around here. Hell, I even had nearly 10,000 points at one time, and I'm as far from a respected poster as most. Quantity of points does not necessarily mean you're well respected around here.

Speaking of point totals, does anyone remember when a gang of eHooligans (myself included) went around and up-voted every single one of the posts "Jay" made until he had more points than Brian? Then he freaked out and retired that name, I'm sure he's around here somewhere.

You and Magnus and Blue in South Bend are losing points under the new system faster than I am....though I am catching up in that category....I think all those huge open threads are expiring. And while (see below) I'm pretty sure it doesn't equal value...there was a point I think I (like others) had more "real" points than Brian, because Geaux Blue gave him a bonus 10,000 so he could just have the most that hasn't dissipated yet. But really, back in the old days, it's not that hard with a funny line, a hot chick pick, and the occasional 1,200 post thread. But thanks.

And boy, did this thread take a meta and personal turn. I know what Rich Rod feels like!

Unfortunately, MGoPoints aren't really all that scary. (Though my Avatar is, isn't it? ISN'T it???)

And no, I'm not really feeling all that downtrodden, but thanks. (We need a lame late night bowl game thread with J Hackney, stat!). I don't really figure Rich cares what people say about him on a blog either. Though he has a few million more than me to not care....

Your avatar is very striking and I wish I thought of something that creative for my avatar. Haku is nice but I'm feeling the urge to MS Paint something again. I've already used Doomguy and upside-down Freekbass...

Anyways, I generally try not to post in RR threads since they always get so catty and don't solve anything. (I do like watching random people duke it out, but when people I admire get attacked en masse I am not happy.) RR's era is over at Michigan, and nothing can change that. I still wear my 2008 and 2009 shirts, mostly because they're the maize-est things I own at present.

Maybe Chunkums can come up with something for you if you ask nice (I DID ask him if I could steal it first). Mine also comes in a more basic brown with just the helmet. Which looks nicer full sized, but not as striking as a tiny avatar. But I deserve no credit but for finally liking something enough to add it...I was as blank as jmblue for a long while. But Chunkums deserves the art credit.
And i didn't even post in this thread before I came up. I like Barwis Effect a lot and it was a fair post, but Rich Rod is politics and religion combined, so, you know... And really I have not generally trashed poor Rich just for the heck of it (contrary to my reputation). It's generally only when someone feels the need to discredit Carr or Hoke to do it. MGoShoe is probably the finest poster on this board, and even though I could tell it was a joke, I can admit it fell a little flat. Whereas mine usually fall flat AND offensive. (Oh, poor poor choice of Kool-Aid Man and Jonestown....). So it happens. But I saw this thread was bad news, and I'm really trying not to fan flames, except when someone is trying to start a fire someplace else to create a distraction.

I'm glad you came out to defend yourself. Things seemed to get a little dicey here when I stood up for you. I thought the world had turned upside down. I always read your posts as they are generally poignant and (sometimes) well thought out. I guess not everyone agrees though.

And truth be told, I don't really care. Guys like Bosch see things very differently, and that's cool. We can argue, but I still respect them, and don't lose sleep over it. It's only when there's some flaming hypocrisy that I speak up, and not make light of it. It's nice to know some are there who sometimes appreciate what you do beyond Jessica Alba pics. Frankly, as cantankerous as I can be, I generally like everyone on here, and come more for the community than any great insight. There's probably less people than you can count on one hand I generally don't like. Even guys I never agree with usually have some characteristics we meet eye to eye on, or are at least very well written, and put up smart (if obsessive) arguments.

It's all good. I could never pull off the wise sage that tows the middle ground act. It's not going to be universal popularity. I just find it funny that a lot more people are thinking like I do around here than when I started. I can remember jmblue eviscerating me with historical factual arguments, just because the dude is so damn smart. Now we agree most of the time. But this has all become way to much about me...not that I mind people talking about me, but no one else really gives a poo*.

It has become a bit tiresome. I guess I'm just nostalgic for the old days when people weren't constantly at eachother's throats over the coaching staff.

Hopefully after a MNC or two this will finally be put to rest.

EDIT: Meant to reply to your other post.

Rodriguez expressed his fondness for golf — especially that it is taking center stage in West Virginia this week.
“This is unbelievable,” he said. “I think the nice part about it — I’m a West Virginia guy, for the people that have not been here can come and see the beauty of our state. And see how friendly the people of West Virginia are.

Could he be trying to mend fences to possibly pave the way for a return to his alma mater in 2012?

Consider all the kibitzers, who would jump on any poor shot or error Rich Rod could make. I just hope his friend has a decent day playing golf. Also no TinCup moments, such as breaking a golf iron over his knee, or refusing to lay up for a green surrounded by bunkers or water.

I know it is Rich Rod is in season for punditry, but I do wish him well, since he did bring UM Football Denard Robinson and an exciting offense to watch the last couple years. I just wish he had picked a better defensive coordinator and recruited better for the defense.
