Clay Hall ABC6 Columbus

Clay Hall asked the last question, not Teddy. That said, it was pretty amatuer hour there at the end.

Nigel Hayes

is the guest on the newest one. Good Lord was that a good interview!

Got me all excited.

That episode (Back by Popular Demand) is from March 28th (at least that's when I got it on Castbox). I thought there was a new one and it didn't show up in my app.

That said, what are other podcasts you all listen to? I listen to a couple college football and non sports while cooking/construction/yardworking/jogging

Michigan/College football:

  • MGoPodcast
  • The Dak and Dunc Show
  • Shutdown FullCAST
  • The Solid Verbal

Non-Sports:

  • Hardcore History
  • Stuff You Should Know
  • Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me
  • This American Life
  • Radiolab
  • Above & Beyond Group Therapy

Cheers!

Dubrovnik, Croatia

While on my honeymoon, I wore my Michigan hat through Paris, Zagreb, Istria, Split and Dubrovnik. Saw a couple of Michigan sweaters in Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is a pretty popular port for Mediterranean cruises, so no real suprise there.

I was promised 50k words!

During the roundtable, Brian said he had another 50k words to write for the preview. Today's drop better check out at 7 165 words, or I'm going to have to speak with the manager.

Who's got it better than us?

Arrive Early, Stay Late, Pay for the close Parking

My dad and I would always park at Pioneer and do our own little tailgate, but it was always boozeless (he doesn't drink, and I was 7 when we started going to games). The only time I was at the golf course was when Toledo played in 2008. I was with the band, so we played for the UT Alumni tent.

Watch the drumline stepshow at Revelli, walk over with the band.

Stay afterwards for the postgame show, it's usually pretty good. Temptation and Hawai'ian War Chant, usually a halftime number or Blues Brothers.

Alternatively, you can watch the team arrive if you stay for the post game show because you'll have seen everything you would see at the stepshow before the game. Maybe there's time to do both.

Take some time to wander around campus.

When I was young, we'd stop at Tony Packo's for dinner on the way back home, but that may not be in your direction, and it's kind of lost it's lustre recently.

Maybe the cop directing traffic still does standup? Dude was hilarious in the mid 90s.

Rain and Tumors

Late to the party, it's been a busy few days.

First Dark Secret: I grew up in Columbus, but for as long as I remember, I've rooted for Michigan. It's probably becuase my dad stopped rooting for OSU when they fired Earl Bruce. He grew up watching the ten year war and really loved both coaches. my dad started taking me to games in the early 90s, usually one game a year till I graduated from high school.

My first michigan game was 93 against purdue, though I was 6 years old so I don't really remember the first few years. One game that stands out was a few years later, in 95, michigan beat purdue in a game that saw rain, sleet, snow, and the worst wind. Final score: 5-0. It has to be the worst conditions I've ever edured to watch a game, but we stayed for the whole thing. That's when I learned about what true fandom was.

Second Dark Secret: I got to watch a game from the sidelines/pressbox, and Michigan lost. I went to college at University of Toledo (UM is expensive if you are out of state in the middle class). I was in the marching band for a few years and helped with video and pictures for the band while I was co-oping. I was at the game when Alex Stagerwald beat RichRod. I did have a Michigan shit under my band apparel for that game. It's the only time in the 20 or so times I've been at a game where Michigan lost.

This week's Dark Secret: University of Michigan Pathology informed me that I don't have carcinoma (Pilomatrix). I had a lump removed from my arm last week and the local hospital pathology deemed it Atypical, and suspicious for carcinoma. Pilomatrical tumors are rare, and mine (being in my late 20s) was extremely rare. Most are benign and are in children, 10% are cancerous and they present in elderly people (0% survivor rate from those). UM said that there was no sign of infiltration that always shows with carcinoma, so we're pretty confident it isn't. If not, then I'm definitely going to go to UM for my Master's in Engineering.

tl;dr : Born in mordor, watched them lose from the sidelines, tumors are shit.

I just had this argument with my father-in-law

And he wouldn't listen. I said I'd rather have a strong center that makes 95% of his attemps under the basket, many rebounds and blocks per game, and shoots 70% from the line. I told him the fact that shaq had a job for so long proves that not everyone should have to hit 90% from the line. Wilt Chamberlin shot 51%. Sometimes teams live or die by the free throw and I would hope that the coach has enough vision to see that and let the team know who should have the ball late in the game/what kind of set up to run so a low% free throw shoot only has the ball long enough to take an uncontested shot.
It also ignores another aspect and that is that the player wants to hit 100%. Every player goes to practice and gets along with their teammates/coaches/management. There is nothing going on in their lives that would distract them from their job. /s

GODDAMMIT!

it's only 6 feet deep,

But it covers over 3000 acres, so half a michigan pothole.

Growing up near Buckeye Lake

I lived most of my life near Buckeye lake and as far as man made lakes go, it was pretty decent (better than Grand Lake St. Mary at least).

It is worth noting that the dam in question was not placed there to just to produce the lake, but rather to maintain the lake water level.  It was hand dug in the 1800s to supply water to the canals and to serve as a winter storage for barges, but it was never connected to any canals. It's extremely shallow with a lot of sand bars and useful bars. Since this part of Ohio saw Glacial activity, there was a lot of prehistoric vegitation that was deposited and subsequently uncovered while digging. This bit of trapped permafrost material released form the bottom and formed a bog (Floating Island) that allowed some prehistoric vegitation to grow (notably, the carnivorous Sundew). From ODNR:

No longer did the floating bog mat surround the glacial lake as is typically the case with such bogs. Now the lake surrounded the bog mat, the only known such occurrence of its kind in the world.

My parents told me that you used to be able to boat right up to it and wander around but all the visitors were causing chunks to tear off and float away, endangering boats in other parts of the lake (imagine hitting a tree trunk that floating just below the surface). I think they have an annual walk that the state park system puts on, but I've never gone on it.

It'd be a shame to see it go.

Lukas Moodysson

made a movie in 2002 called Lilya 4+ever (Lilly 4ever) that was about an Estonian girl trying to survive in post Soviet Estonia (I think it's based on an actual story about a Lithuanian girl) after her mother abandons her to live in the US with her boyfriend.  The rape scenes in that are just absolutely brutal (and like 5 minutes long, shot POV), but I think it tells the story of human trafficking and how absolutely devastating it often is.  I really like gut wrenching movies, but this is probably the bar for devastatingly beautiful.

He made another movie in 2009 called Mammoth, that is gripping, and remorseful, but very beautiful and does a spectactular job of putting actions to feelings when you are in a place and just want to feel love.

In Before the Campus Shutdown

As a contractor, Company policy states that contractors aren't allowed to work from home, so if the campus (Levis Park Campus/Owens-Illinois World Headquarters) is closed, you still don't paid like the salaried workers.  Got to work before the level 3s were issued (Lucas County/Toledo).

April 6th

April 6th is the due date for our first child, and with the way this winter has been, I might have to name it Jon Snow.

soon, very soon

Hopslam should be around soon.  I overhead the clerk for The Anderson's (Maumee) say they'll get their shipment in on Monday.  I've definitely gotten 120m IPA in Ohio, but it was in the Akron area.  just ask your local liquor store if they'd be willing to purchase a case so you can buy some.  Paulken Wine and Liquor in Maumme, Ohio will order it if they can find a distributer for it, and they won't force you to buy the whole case.

I started a 1 gal nut brown ale (all grain) last night, and rolling with some Half Acre's Daisy Cutter Pale Ale right now.

It smells of lame

The UT-BGSU rivalry goes back to 1919, and was suspended after riots broke out following a 63-0 UT blowout in 1935.

In 1948, the smoking of a six-foot peace pipe was instated as a gesture of goodwill between the two basketball  teams at half-time of the annual game. The peace pipe would be kept by the winning university until the teams played again the following season. The tradition came to an abrupt and unpleasant end in 1969 when the pipe was stolen from the UT offices. It was never recovered and the thief never caught.

If not stupid, it was at least very lame

My experience of this rivalry was in 2005, UT prevailing in triple overtime in BG

We better get season tix for this

Otherwise I'm going to post a topic complaining about how hard we worked to make skinny post and now have nothing to show for it

Guh!

Stupid me.

also from 1995

I don't know what to classify mine as, probalby most "BIG TEN"

Following the MSU loss, I was at my second Michigan game ever against Purdue.  It was cold, windy, started to sprinkle, turned to rain, then sleet, then snow, back to sleet.  I sat for 3 quarters huddled with my dad to keep warm.  Final score : 5-0.  I think there is a post about that game, but that was before I had the nerve to start posting.

Craziest:  working for the Rocket Marching Band taking pictures and videotaping halftime, I got to watch the game from the field and the old pressbox.  Always dreamed of getting to run down the tunnel, to get that kind of unrestricted access through the stadium was incredible.  I was required to wear a RMB polo shirt, but I work my michigan shirt underneath.  The only time I didn't care who won, I was going to have a good day.

Email from ticket office Thank you for applying for tickets to the U.S. Men's National Team's upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Mexico on Sept. 10 at Columbus Crew Stadium. Due to the large number of ticket applications received for this highly-anticipated event, U.S. Soccer will now inform applicants of their ticket request status by Friday, Aug. 2. "The Federation originally set a July 30 response date, but extra time is needed to review all the requests. The combined number of tickets applied for and purchased through presales finished at more than twice the capacity of Crew Stadium. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience."

As a new homeowner...

I do have an idea.  Congrats!  Here's to a smooth closing process and the hopes that they don't sell your mortgage to Fannie Mae...

THANKS!

I have enjoyed his graphical magic. One can only re-read The Mathlete's post only so much.

THANK YOU

I had something similar happen

but it was in 3rd grade, and it was a fake detention slip.  living in columbus, everyone wore scarlet and grey, and I wore all michigan clothes.  My parents knew the person in charge of discipline at the school and she thought it would be a funny joke to tell them ii'd be getting detention every week till I either wore scalret and grey or something ohio state.  My dad has a red t-shirt with grey letters that says "GO BLUE", someone made for him because she was dying of cancer and figured that would be the only way she'd ever see him wear scarlet and grey.   That weekend (1993) I got my own scarlet and grey GO BLUE shirt and was paraded around the school on monday because they liked it so much.

I don't think the shenanigans that go on about this should be taken too seriously.  In middle school there was always a party that friday before the game, and all the people that wore osu got cupcakes and the michigan fans got stale marshmellows.  it made me feel better on monday when i'd hand out sympathy cards to all the teachers that gave me so much crap.

Chic-Fil-A & Waffle House

By not allowing Chic-Fil-A and Waffle House to mate, Spencer is essentially saying that Chicken and Waffles are not a good idea.  How odd...

he can

when his name is gene cross.  when you recruit players that is bound to become academically ineligible and/or leave ineligable and not get them into the proper courses/tutotring.

APR hits usually come a year after the issue, so this should only last one season.

Toledo has a brand new arena and the only games that were sold out were the inagural game vs Umass and the whole WNIT series last year and this year.  it'd be nice to want to see both men's and women's teams play decent non conference where they have a chance.

Dothraki

I was thinking USC as the Dothraki, tan and kind of just slash and burn everything.

Earl Scrugss

just died, so i've been listening to that and bill monroe all day
Raptors falling to banjo music is almost as good as jimmah falling to benny hill.

looks like

he took catching lesson from Luis Salazar.
but sersiously, he's lucky to still have his both his eyes.

yeah

what a terrible draw. they need to fix it so there is some sort of power rankings so the two best teams aren't playing like this till the end.

milan needs to beat juve tues by 2 goals to stay in the coppa italia, something that seams to be difficult for them. El Shaarawy should be rested well by then.

Milan

is winning, sun is shining, everyone knows the score of the dook game, what more could you ask for (other than mich still in the tourney and an endless supply of hopslam and KBS)

Forza Rossoneri!

Right

I think it has mostly to do with operating budgets of the bowls and schools combined.  I think The Marching 110 has a nicer budget than Toledo's, but I know my friends at Ohio got to Perform at disney world and stayed in a pretty nice hotel in Orlando.

not missing much

but the people there were really friendly and were happy that mardi gras was going to be celebrated mainly in their that year. It is every year, but they feel that NOLA "stole it" from them so it was like going back to the good ol' days for them. they're realy proud of their city, but what can you expect from an impoverished city on the gulf.

Toledo in the GMAC Bowl '05

I played snare my frosh year and got to go to swanky mobile, alabama on a bus while the football team flew.  we stayed in the worst hotel I've ever been in  (the last building on the the site still was busted up from the hurricane and was taped off).  we had no pool, all rooms were outward facing (no hallways), one room had to be broken into by the hotel staff because it wouldn't unlock, and the place was crawling with prostitutes the whole time we were there.  the football team got to stay in a nice hotel across the interstate.  they actually ran out of room in the football hotel and half the cheerleaders had to stay with the band, when they were gettin to their room for the first time, there was a naked dude wait for a prostitute when they unlocked the door.  the place was infested with ants, and it was the worst looking place on the road.  there was a darts and billiards bar nearby, but many of us were under 21 and couldn't go in.  to go the mall you had to cross an interstate overpass.  it was probably the crappiest bowl trip you could have endured, but it was my freshman year and I got to go a bowl game for free, so it was certainly bearable.

Not to gripe about the quality of the GMAC bowl in comparison to the bcs bowls, but the band and cheerleaders definitely got the short end of the stick.

EDIT: talking with the UTEP band, they only brought 1/3 of their band because of the cost, while toledo brought all 200

park'n'party

is a way to reserve a parking spot for the game. for a small fee, they will save you a spot and you don't have to sit in line hoping for a spot.  mostly for piece of mind.  it can be expensive to park (i usu just park at pioneer and if i stay for the band, enough people have left that traffic isn't too bad)

There had been an ad along the side bar of the page that got brian some money, but i haven't seen it for a few weeks. here's a link none-the-less:

Try Airbnb.com

Airbnb.com

I used for my honeymoon in Croatia last month and it worked out perfect. there was one owner that even took us to the airport when we left for detroit.

Definitely check out toledo/maumee, I know there are a few hotels on Dussel Road that are very close to the interstate.  There is also some good eating to be found in that stretch of Maumee.

Also check out the park and party to guarentee a spot if you rent a car, I prob wouldn't chance just parking it anywhere.
