Thread of stupid college football trophy game trophies
Come one, come all! The person to find the dumbest/most stupid looking/lamest/strange college football trophy wins the internets.
My vote- the Land Grant Trophy. Part of the fictional rivalry between penn state and sparty. This thing is one big clusterfuck of awful.

Clearly the Illibuck because nothing says "buckeye" and "Illini" like a freaking turtle.

What a compelling start to that "rivalry." 41+ points to 0-9 points for four consecutive OSU victories. Jesus.

are not the first games. In the first 5 years of the trophy (first three years had the real turtle), Illinois won 4 times, 3 by shutouts:
Year | Illinois | Ohio State | Location | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1925 | Illinois | 14 | Ohio State | 9 | Columbus |
1926 | Illinois | 6 | Ohio State | 7 | Champaign |
1927 | Illinois | 13 | Ohio State | 0 | Columbus |
1928 | Illinois | 8 | Ohio State | 0 | Champaign |
1929 | Illinois | 27 | Ohio State | 0 | Columbus |
After that it was downhill for the Ilini, winning less than a third of the time.

Gotta go with the Iowa v. Iowa State Cy-Hawk Trophy. Specifically, the one they killed shortly after unveiling it because it was so damn awful:
Iowa: Come for the corn, stay for... well, hope you like corn, because that's about it.

I have lived in Iowa for a couple years now, and even the natives hated it! Winner hands-down, even if just for the name of "cy-hawk" trophy. Really? That's the most original name you could think of?

The most unstupidist college football trophy is The Brown Jug.

Honorable Mention:
The Peddlewheel Trophy (Pitt vs Cincinnati). What in the hell...
Battle for the Bones or Famous Dave's Ribs trophy (Memphis vs. Alabama-Birmingham)
The Milk Can (Boise State vs Fresno State)

Seconded. And I don't hate the ribs trophy because it makes me think of delicious ribs. The first one, though....
October 2nd, 2013 at 8:32 PM ^
Seconded. It reminds me of a farming stanley cup.
October 2nd, 2013 at 6:41 PM ^
and runs past Cinncinnati, the Paddlewheel trophy would seem to be a reminder of the river boat traffic that was an important part of both cities history.

It's because the cities have both long claimed title of best bbq, though eastern Carolina style is clearly their superior.

Generic trophy for a generically-named generic rivalry made so by conference realignment.

Maybe for Iowa, but not really for Nebraska. I lived there for a while and they never really thought about Iowa. The rivalry that seemed to be taking hold there was with Wisconsin. They had long-running rivalries with Oklahoma and Colorado that got to that deep level of hatred.
It's kind of like how Illinois thinks Michigan is a big rival.

that joke never gets old! =)

As with all truncated pyramids topped with a football, it has new-age magical powers.
Iowa wants it to heal players injured by the AIRBHG.

I give you the Paddlewheel trophy, going to the winner of the Pittsburgh vs. Cinncinati game.
October 2nd, 2013 at 5:20 PM ^
That's kind of awesome. Ohio River cities, it's a steamboat captain's thingee. Far better than the "Heroes Game."

TCU vs SMU

Hah! This is awesome!
I like the insane trophies just as much as the cool ones.
October 2nd, 2013 at 8:46 PM ^
WTF is that? Why not just stick a label on a hubcap and call it a trophy.
October 2nd, 2013 at 4:27 PM ^
But the Paul Bunyan trophy for the M/MSU game is pretty ghastly.
October 2nd, 2013 at 4:29 PM ^
I agree it's hideous, but at least it has history. Yay for Tradition!
October 2nd, 2013 at 8:47 PM ^
It's been around awhile now, but there isn't any great story behind it or anything. When MSU joined the B1G in the 1950s, the governor of Michigan donated a trophy for the teams to play for. The Little Brown Jug, it ain't.
October 2nd, 2013 at 11:33 PM ^
Yeah, but that governor's nom de guerre was Soapy.
October 2nd, 2013 at 4:35 PM ^
Up until sparty parading the Bunyan figure around from 2008-2011 like they won the Stanley Cup, I knew very little about the Paul Bunyan. All I can remember is Lloyd calling it ugly.
Never read anything about Bo on the Paul Bunyan. Or really any coach before Lloyd for that matter on Paul Bunyan.
Actually I'm getting estimates from a local artist who is a wood sculptor on how much it would cost to do an authentic Paul Bunyan Trophy that is full size. I'm already very, very interested in the replica Little Brown Jug being made currently by the artist who paints the scores on the jug. It was at the MGoPatio event for Jon Falk. It's looking very nice. Quite a large price tag though. I'd expect Bunyan to be more just based on the size of it.
All those years of calling Paul Bunyan ugly, I think we all took it for granted. Sure looked beautiful in the locker room with the players last year.

It's the speed control gauge from a paddle boat. It makes sense as a trophy. Both cities linked by the Ohio River. Thumbs up.

Toledo vs. Bowling Green

That trophy has a special place in my heart. GO FALCONS!
October 2nd, 2013 at 11:47 PM ^
The peace pipe was better but understand it had to go; it really didn't have much history. Too bad they couldn't have made a better trophy like a Falcon holding a Rocket in its talons or something. Honestly, I would rather have a piece of asphalt as the trophy than the current one.

The UT-BGSU rivalry goes back to 1919, and was suspended after riots broke out following a 63-0 UT blowout in 1935.
In 1948, the smoking of a six-foot peace pipe was instated as a gesture of goodwill between the two basketball teams at half-time of the annual game. The peace pipe would be kept by the winning university until the teams played again the following season. The tradition came to an abrupt and unpleasant end in 1969 when the pipe was stolen from the UT offices. It was never recovered and the thief never caught.
If not stupid, it was at least very lame
My experience of this rivalry was in 2005, UT prevailing in triple overtime in BG

Celebrating the great history of the ND-Stanford game since 1989. They had only played 5 times prior to the introduction of the trophy.
