You Have 4 Saturdays Until FOOTBALL - What Are You Doing With Them?

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on August 6th, 2022 at 8:56 AM

Mates,

Counting today, there are 4 open Saturdays until actual, real, count-'em-because-they-count college football games will be played.  Summer is here (hot today in the mitten state) and there are only so many days left to do your weekend projects, knock out a trip or vacation of some sort, get out on your boat, etc.

So the question is quite simple:  What are you doing these last days, particularly these last weekends of summer as football looms?

May all those plans come to fruition, and may you enjoy every bit of them.

today: work on an attic space adjacent to another room in our house that I'm turning into a hidden room (you know the one with a bookshelf that opens). kids want to go to the zoo and see the lynx kittens, so we'll do that this afternoon.

next weekend: hope to continue working on that room

next next weekend: long weekend camping trip

fourth weekend: too far out

Next Saturday the larger family group is going up to Leelanau for the week.  First time up in the Traverse City area, so that should be fun.

Personally I hope to get out on the water a time a week (outside of that vacation) and do some bass fishing.

And I have to get into my classroom and get that ready for the school year.  And finish installing a patio.  I took out the deck this past week and now just need stone or sand to smooth it over then some paver stones.

4 weeks!!!  Go Blue, baby!!!

This weekend I'm at my MIL's restocking her freezer for the next three months with home-cooked, ready-to-microwave meals, plus tonight she's having some friends over for dinner and I get to play chef (chicken parm, fresh bread, fresh vegetables, chocolate mousse).

Next weekend: I return home! Our daughter returns to her home.

Following weekend: our son will be here!

The next weekend after: our son returns home.

All weekends: garden, keep the house clean, take care of my beloved, plan out a September camping excursion that we may or may not be able to take, keep my local library in business, stare at the internet waiting for football season. Just like every other day. Such is retired life.

I'm going to try and be at our place up north on the lake as much as possible. Heading up there tomorrow in fact.  We just got some steaks to grill to take with us from Knight's.

I'll be working a lot during the weekends. My office had 3 retirements in June and July. It looks bleak for weekends this football season as well. I only have 1 year 14 days before I can retire. I was thinking about working 6 more years but the one year option is looking better all the time.

I like my job but to have more of a normal life it would be better to retire early at age 60. Though no SS until 62 (federal employees can do a SS bridge but I prefer not to). But with a small federal pension and working part time, I could manage it. I don't plan to tap my 401K (TSP) until I turn 72, and will probably retire fully (no part time jobs) by then (hopefully I can live that long and several years there after).

Today going out to BFE to see my (*fingers crossed*) new house and prefilling the punch list. Next Saturday - checking off the punch list. Next Saturday, sleeping on the floor, with a deathgrip on MY house keys.  Last of the 4, schlepping furniture and a BFG9000 TV so I can sleep in a bed, and be ready for some football. (Or hurriedly trying to secure an apartment and cursing mortgage underwiters everywhere.)

Seeing a lot of baseball.  Today will be in Cleveland with the gf seeing the Guardians take on the Astros in a make up game for a rain out a while back (we tried to see a 3 game set against the Tigers, Saturday night ended up postponed).  Next week I have tickets I won at a company outing to see the Toledo Mud Hens.  Then the last weekend before football starts the gf and I are making a trip to Texas.  We'll stop in San Antonio for some tourist stuff.  Then we'll head to Houston to see NASA and Minuite Maid Park for the first time.  Then headed to Arlington to see the Rangers take on the Tigers (gf is a Tigers fan).

Unfortunately our home opener and Labor Day weekend will forever be bitter sweet since my motorcycle accident last year on 9/4/21 that resulted in my wife’s death and injuries from which I continue to recover. So while I look forward to Michigan football, it will also mark the first full year without my wife and my kids not having their mom.

As for the next four weekends, that will depend on how quickly my broken right tibia heals since the ring fixator was installed on 7/1 after two prior failed surgeries. In past years before last September, my wife and I would use these weekends to ride and enjoy the end of summer on our bike as well as taking our daughter back to college in Florida. This will be her last year there, so I hope to make the trip again, but we will see if the leg can manage.

Sorry to be a drag… I’ll still watch the game with my kids, who will all be coming home to memorialize their mom’s passing. I watched every game last season, even the ones I missed while in the hospital thanks to DVR. I sincerely believe my wife had a hand in our win against osu, I’m sure she has some pull upstairs now. Be sure to thank her. Her name is Candace. She was a gem!!!
