I'd note that the reality is that AT LEAST one of the power 5 conference champs doesn't get it, but you are absolutely correct.  Michigan fans should want the Big Ten to look good in NC play, except Penn State in those years they have recruits that we want (and in those years they don't).

Dude, why don''t you just knock it the fuck off with telling us what we should care about?

What I really don't care about is WHY you were raised to believe that you were the world dictator of when people could be fans and what they should care about.  I only care that you grow up and realize that you are not, or, alternatively, that you retain your beliefs but never post here again.

This is what happened to them after losing to OSU a few years ago.

They poured literally everything they had into that game, and after OSU edged them out for a win, they had nothing left for the rest of the season. Everything bad that could happen to them happened.

But we do play teams that Northwestern plays, and like many have said already, they are the type of team that could go and take out an Iowa or Wisconsin, which will make our own SOS weaker. Granted, you could say that about everyone our opponents play, but still is always nice to see B10 do well out of conference.

It means Wisconsin and Iowa will have an extra win for sure, and make our games against them more meaningful. What does matter is if Northwestern turns it around in the conference and goes 6-3 or something. Then the conference will look bad. The Big 12 doesn't get punished for having Kansas, the ACC never got punished for having Duke, etc. Every conference has a couple of bottom feeders. It's only ugly when said bottom feeder beats a top team, making everyone doubt everything due to the misapplication of the transitive property of winning.

This is really, really bad. Fitz has a lot of leeway in Evanston, he's close with the president (who is actually pretty into football), and the administration really supports what he's doing with the program. But... you have to think the patience has to be eroding. He isn't that teflon-level untouchable.

Here's the thing: NU is pretty much an outlier--it's not a peer institution within its conference (small, private, tries to situate itself as a peer to the Ivies/Stanford/etc.). It's not in a state with a huge amount of talent. It's a very small private school with modest, though far improved facilities, and a glorified high school stadium. No rivals that anyone gives a shit about.

And then you add in the higher academic standards for athletes, what's Fitz supposed to do? This is not going to be a great program again--but it should be a team that scores more than 7 points against SIU.

they probably could compete with Stanford (football wise) in getting student athletes nationally but, unlike Stanford, they don't have the base of talent in their own state...

Fitzgerald, as much of a headache as he can be, is probably the best they can do and is not that bad of a coach for the school...I think he leaves NW when he is good and ready.

Remember the only team in the regular season that beat them when they went to the Rose Bowl?

The NW of my youth couldn't win anythng...

NW nowdays loses these type of games but then could very well beat Wisconsin or Iowa  (remember in 2014, NW went 5-7 and beat Wisconsin, Penn State, and Notre Dame).

For every two games that they lose that they aren't supposed to, the win a game that they aren't upposed to...

Tom Herman at PSU would make for a fun schedule every year but I don't want PSU to have nice things and I think he stays down south. Dantonio, Harbaugh, Meyer, and Herman in one division would be insane although I think Dantonio retires in the next 5-7 years.

I don't get the Herman love. Yes he can coach but he needs to prove he can recruit and build a program with his guys. I know he pulled a five star d lineman in the last class but I am still a bit hesitant. Then again, LSU has shown they aren't the most adept at hiring a football coach save the Saban hire.
