Wolverine Combine Results

Submitted by Fishbulb on March 7th, 2022 at 8:31 AM

A quick summary for those interested (focusing on speed/quickness).  In order: 40 time, 3 cone, 20 yard shuttle.

Aidan:  4.74, 6.73, 4.15

Ojabo:  4.55, DNP, 4.45

Daxton:  4.38, 6.57, 4.06

Gray:  4.54, DNP, DNP

Stueber:  DNP, 7.94, 4.9

For anyone who cares, Aidan has the 'shortest' arms of that bunch (gigantic eye roll).

Random trivia--somehow Georgia's PUNTER ran a 4.5 40, but since his arms are even shorter than Aidan's, I'm not sure how he even catches a snap, let alone carry the ball on a fake.

Some people won’t buy a car because of slight deviations in panel gaps. I don’t blame teams for looking at all aspects of a player before they draft them.  It’s a lot of money.

Thanks for posting, OP.

Gray's 40 time, while not blazing for a DB, is maybe better than some expected.

There was a discussion of Hutchinson's arms on one of the sports sites recently. Aaron Donald was -- of course -- cited as a guy who outplays his measurables. Aidan has proven himself against a few NFL-caliber tackles, so I don't think he has to be concerned. Still, like it or not, long arms are a benefit when rushing the passer.

Some additional information to help put things in context, per Next Gen Stats (which is an NFL affiliated thing) Hutchinson has a 93 athleticism score, which was tops among edge players and considered "elite". Dax Hill has a 96 score, also tops among his group (safeties) and "elite".

That Gray time is much faster than I thought.  It isn't fast for an NFL corner and obviously we know what happens when he has to look for the ball while running (still shaking fist about Georgia game)....but good for him putting up a decent time.

I think Aidan is going to be a good NFL player, but I think he's going to be less than elite.  I think a lot of what he thrives on is effort combined with good intelligence and pretty good physical tools.  (as opposed to Ojabo who's sort of the opposite)  I think Aidan can reach Bosa status, but he needs the right fit and right teammates.

As for arm length, he will be a challenge at the NFL level, but not a show stopper.

That’s High school D1 track star speed right there.

I'm confused, is it high school track speed or D1 track speed? It's definitely not D1 track speed, but it's really good for a rush D end

Aidan's agility ratings are insane. Dax too- 4.06 20 yard shuttle is crazy. 4.55 not a surprise for Ojabo, freaky athletic. I could see all 3 going day 1, way to show out.

@St Joes Blues, if you're disappointed with a sub 4.4 then recalibrate your expectations. You don't realize how ridiculous a sub 4.4 is for a human being. The fact a kid said he wanted a 4.2 and then you immediately made that your expectation is bizarre. Not to mention look at his agility drills. You and i would struggle to run 7 second 40s lol, a 4.3 is inhuman.

40 times are so misunderstood because every HS prospect claims to run a 4.4 and people who don’t really know anything believe that and it skews their expectations. 4.38 is crazy fast. Denard ran 4.43 at the combine.

They have the laser-timed 40 yard dash at the B1G CG fan fest. I watched no less than 30 "average Joes" run it and NOT ONE broke six seconds. There was an early-20s guy who lined up and ran like he had some legit HS/college track experience, and he barely broke 5 seconds.

Standing right next to people doing it and seeing how much slower they are than these athletes really gives you some perspective on how flippin' fast those guys really are.

@CaliforniaNobody said "if you're disappointed with a sub 4.4 then recalibrate your expectations."

Not "disappointed" at all. I was shocked when Dax said 4.2 in his interview because I only remember one sub 4.3 at the Combine. So when he said it, I was eagerly looking forward to seeing his time. He's always been a somewhat quiet leader, so I listen when he says something. I assumed that was his expectation. I was excited for him and hoped to see him do it.

Personally, I was pumped the time I posted a 4.99 hand-timed 40. Of course everyone on my team was fast the day we timed. Looking back, I know now it was my coach trying to give us confidence.

@TK Exactly. Growing up the fastest kid in our school claimed to run a 4.3, and a bunch of people took it to heart and were shocked when he ran in the 4.7s at a regional combine. People see the headlines and assume a 4.4 must be average, and a 4.9 terrible, and then you end up with a kid having a hell of a showing like Dax here and still get talked down on because it wasn't literally the fastest time ever.

Hutchinson’s 40 time is decent, but it’s his 3-cone and shuttle times that show his true quickness. Those (and his high motor and football knowledge) more than make up for any physical deficiencies such as shorter arms. I predict his nfl career will be better than many of the “freaks” that have been drafted at his position recently.

Brad Hawkins should have been there.

But even without it some Mocks have him going as high as the 4th Rnd.

He will he valuable in the NFL .

Pretty sure Dax could have been a “Peppers” like player if we wanted him to be. That athleticism only comes around every so-often (and we somehow got two within a decade).

@nowicki. I guess Ross' 40 time helps explain why he couldn't cover any better than he did. Too bad he didn't do the quickness tests. He must be fairly quick, he played faster than that 40 (except in coverage).

It's been said but The Combine is mostly useless information/data and the team meetings/questionnaires are in many cases downright vile.

It's basically to find hidden talent and make owners feel safe in their new millions of dollars investment. If they bust, "well, they did run a 4.3 40 so...".

It's a game and they have tons of tape. Watch it. That will let you know more than a 40 or broad jump or the length of a player's arms.

Also, the questions and tests given often cross the line. I get why you'd maybe antagonize a guy you may have doubts about from a disciplinary perspective. Maybe a quick comment that could be taken in a way to see if he is quick to anger, etc. Yet, to call a guy's mothers a whore and outright accuse others of being gay is ridiculous. Knowing a few guys that have been in those meetings, the things I've heard would get any other business sued into oblivion if done in an interview. Really gross stuff being asked of and about them. Not just "why didn't teammates come to your birthday party" or "tell us about the time you were arrested in high school". A lot of sexual stuff, hypothetical questions about what you'd do if someone abused your child, etc.

One in particular said he was asked if he likes fingers put in...a certain place...during sex. What use or benefit does that question provide about a potential player on your team?! They all say it feels more like the team knowing they have the power to ask it than necessary or meaningful questions. It's just weird dudes being weird in th power they know they hold.

Dax had ZERO chance of running in the 4.2's.  ZERO.

Deion Sanders was like 4.27 and Dax is no Deion Sanders.   If you are in the 4.2's laser timed, you are historically elite.

Im having a fun time laughing at all the people who now want Travon Walker over Aiden because of his 40 & jumping test results. Because your defensive linemen are going to be sprinting downfield & high pointing catches so often.

Hutchinson's agility numbers are absolutely insane. I hope the Lions let him go somewhere he has a chance to succeed.

As a recovering Lions fan, I really hope the Lions buy into the “short-arm panic” and pass on Hutchinson. I’d love to see him get a chance to play meaningful games in the NFL and that will never happen in Detroit.

Was surprised when Dax’s vertical and broad jumps were underwhelming (by an elite, elite athlete’s standard), but then when he led all safeties in the shuffle times and ran a 4.38 it more than made up for it. That’s the type of speed and quickness we’ve seen and known about since before he arrived on campus.

And yes, the average sports fan, let alone average human, struggles to comprehend just how different elite athletes are. 4.38 is crazy fast. Denard and Jabrill were 4.4+ guys and we all know how fast they were.

Jordan Davis is 6’6”+ 340lbs+ and ran a 4.79. Insanity. If you’re a fairly active, in-shape male and you see a man that size you probably come to the assumption that you’re faster than him. Not even close.

That Georgia defense, btw, was every bit as fast as we assumed. Both of their massive interior DTs were as fast and faster than our MLB, their EDGE and LB were burners, and their hammer of a S ran a 4.37. That was indeed a historical defense, both in terms of production and athleticism. It’s impressive that Bama was able to get to them the first go around.

Seth owes Brad Hawkins an apology.  He’s been giving him shit about being slow because he got dusted by Pacheco 3 years ago and also said Pacheco was slow. Dude ran a 4.38!

Ross superpower seems to be diagnosing what he’s seeing in front of him fast which lets him get to his spot.  Probably explains how fast he is in the box but covering downfield looked a step slower than expected.

Gray running 4.54 gets him drafted as a depth corner/ special teams.  Could be helpful in a zone Tampa 2 scheme.

crazy athletics from last years team on display

VG had a faster 40 than I thought or expected.  Maybe he gets drafted now.   But on another note Georgias defensive guys were all fast as hell.  No wonder they were so good.   Dam I hated paying them over Bama.

Arm length is a big deal, especially for DEs.  Hutchinson did excel in the agility drills, and has the tape to back up his play.  But a lesser prospect would definitely be moved down teams boards if he had 32" arms.
