WMU rumored to be interested in Jay Harbaugh
December 5th, 2022 at 7:37 AM ^
His name has been mentioned, don't know anything beyond that.
But it would be a huge blow. He deserves it, for sure. You have to hear them out if you want to be a HC.
Especially if his goal is to take over for his dad one day.

Hey Recruits, come and be a part of a program that develops you in a way to compete at the highest level every year in CFB and also prepares you for the next level. Hey Coaches, come and be a part of a program that is going to challenge you to be better and more than likely provide you an opportunity to coach at a higher level. #THEMichiganDifference
Go Blue!

That's a flag for overemphasis of the definite article. Take that nonsense down south.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:52 AM ^
I'm not a lawyer, but it may also be a tortious violation of copyright statutes.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:13 AM ^
If he plans to be the HC at Michigan, he needs to take the next step, either at WMU or elsewhere. He needs to prove to himself and Michigan that it wouldn't be simple nepotism for him to take over as the head coach here someday.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:58 AM ^
Worked out pretty well for PJ Fleck.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:51 AM ^
He appears to be slightly better than Brian Ferentz. ;) /s
December 5th, 2022 at 12:28 PM ^
It's a long way from being a position coach to a head coach at a major institution, particularly for a guy with no serious college or NFL experience.
I would think that Jay would have an opportunity to work his way up to an OC or DC and, depending upon his success level, take the next step.
Part of what makes JH so valuable is his experience at multiple levels and his contacts. Even then, as a star player at Michigan and the in the NFL as a QB for a very long time, Jim had to start at smaller programs and work his way up.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:25 AM ^
I'm still crushed over the Gattis to Miami (YTM) thing.
I don't know how we're gonna recover from that.

Especially if his goal is to take over for his dad one day.
His grandpa, the former WMU coach, says "hello".
December 5th, 2022 at 7:37 AM ^
Just one nice moment. Can we have one without some "report"?????
December 5th, 2022 at 7:47 AM ^
Just to fuck with your nice moment, its been reported by my brother-in-laws best friends cousin, who’s wife works for the Indianapolis Colts, that the Colts met with Harbaugh early Saturday morning and it’s a done deal and Harbaugh will be the next Colts head coach.
Now…how’s that for a “report?”

Well. That would actually make some sense...so there is that. Jim to the Vikings seemed very mid-life crisisish. I believe that he will now finish his coaching career at Michigan.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:35 AM ^
I actually agree on Jim staying at M - at least through his contract - based on his comments before the season and then yesterday.
What is interesting to me is that I also thought Jim was a little crazy for looking at the Minnesota job at the time but..........he must have seen something that others didn't with the Vikings now 10-2. Imagine what they could do with a non former-Spartan QB?
December 5th, 2022 at 9:07 AM ^
too late. moment over.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:48 AM ^
Exactly. There's also smoke All is following Cade to Iowa. Wouldn't be a major hit with the emergence of Loveland and I believe Schoon comes back
December 5th, 2022 at 12:07 PM ^
That would make WAY more sense than Cade to Iowa. I figured that as a captain, Cade would have some pull and wouldn't be making that trip alone. Someone from that receiver group seems like a logical fit.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:34 PM ^
That makes no sense to me. Iowa has put TEs in the league for sure, but they don't exactly show out at the college level for the most part, and that offense is more of a dumpster fire than its ever been.
I guess if All wants a chance to show out --- and he sees what we have on deck in the way --- then i get the transfer, but just not getting the Iowa thing.
Chemistry with Cade is nice, but it doenst fix the issue where Cade is getting rocked every other play.
December 5th, 2022 at 7:40 AM ^
Assistants getting interviews is the cost of the program's success and culture overall. I actually enjoy seeing things like this.
(followed by 'I'm not going anywhere' posts and raises)
December 5th, 2022 at 7:59 AM ^
How weird is it to leverage your dad for a raise?
December 5th, 2022 at 8:04 AM ^
Not particularly.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:26 AM ^
I'm gonna go ahead and say it's actually awfully damn strange because most assistant coaches whose dad is the HC are already past their Peter Principle line and nobody's banging down their door to have them lead a program. See Ferentz, Brian and Groh, Mike.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:40 AM ^
A majority of Bowden kids worked out fine as respectable college HC's. And Shanahan seems to be doing OK in San Fran. Sure there are others who failed, but I choose to think that Jay is more in the Bowden/Shanahan/Wade Phillips type.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:57 AM ^
This, and Jay is a third generation coach. Football is in their DNA as much as any other great American football family.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:57 AM ^
But then, Terry Bowden never worked for Bobby except for one year as a GA, and Jeff Bowden is another great example of the aforementioned Peter Principle. The dude went from OC at Florida State directly to a position coach job in D-II.
This isn't a comment on the quality of Jaybaugh as a coach, BTW, more about how uncommon it is for sons to be in any position to apply any leverage to their dads for a salary boost.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:42 AM ^
This is different. Jay's performance has been outstanding. And he can recruit.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:03 AM ^
“Dad, if you wanna see your grandkids you better get off your wallet, big time “.
EDIT: "because we're living in a van, down by the huron river!!"
December 5th, 2022 at 8:09 AM ^
In a press conference interview, a question was asked about Sherrone Moore and whether he's ready to be a head coach. Jim Harbaugh's response was, "Way past ready." I'm not advocating for Sherrone's departure, but I think it does show what kind of view Jim Harbaugh takes: that is, coaches come, put in the work, move up and then move on.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:16 AM ^
...and if they're successful, we have a pool to choose from -- who understand the winning culture here -- when Jim inevitably moves on
December 5th, 2022 at 8:13 AM ^
Jay has been very well groomed for exactly this type of move. This would be an excellent entry point to an HC position for him.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:30 AM ^
And not a horrible scenario to have connections with the directional schools.
Mike Dana type that wants to show-out for the NFL in a grad transfer year, son might send him to dad.
Local recruit that's getting passed on the depth chart at Michigan, dad might send him to son.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:38 AM ^
Schembeckler used to send those guys to university of Toledo back in the seventies and early eighties.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
Seems like Jay should get a coordinator job at a larger university first. Not saying he couldn't be a head coach, but going from position coach to HC seems like a jump. Like if Greg Roman got the job at Stanford Jay could be the OC there for 2 years and then get a HC job. That would seem more probable. Some success outside of his father's direct orbit. All reports of Jay on here and elsewhere are that he is a fantastic coach.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:47 AM ^
That was the traditional way to break in - but I don't think that's the case anymore. Plenty of examples of position coaches making the jump and making it work.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:39 PM ^
Not to mention, I believe he is technically already a coordinator as well, of Special Teams. Just like his uncle was before becoming a HC.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:40 PM ^
His uncle went from special teams to HC for the Ravens and that's worked out pretty well.
December 5th, 2022 at 7:43 AM ^
Sure. And I would fully expect them to at least make a call to Moore. However, you would think they had something solid lined up considering their timing of firing Lester, who was not doing a bad job.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:22 AM ^
Lester was mediocre at best. A very “meh” hire after what Fleck accomplished at WMU. They were never ranked at any time during Lester’s tenure…….expectations were higher after Fleck and Lester couldn’t meet them
December 5th, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
Beauregard tried to pull the Michigan, shortly after Harbaugh came home she wanted the old QB from my time in Kzoo. Great QB but probably suited for a job as an OC maybe?
December 5th, 2022 at 9:24 AM ^
But this spoils my galaxy brain plan to have JayBaugh coach WR next year!
December 5th, 2022 at 10:26 AM ^
Lester did do a bad job. As a Western alum i grew to expect AT LEAST 1 personal foul per game. Lester was handed a very well stocked roster by MAC standards. Still they would finish around .500 in the conference and not get to Ford Field. He was clearly learning on the job and surrounded himself with non-FBS level coordinators. That with lesser recruiting is a recipe for disaster.
We saw the record fall toward mediocrity and his recruiting fell back to what it was with Bill Cubit before Fleck, maybe worse. Lester failed to effectively recruit East of I-69 which became part of Fleck’s stronghold over EMU & CMU. Instead he stayed mainly on the West side/IN/IL & MO.
December 5th, 2022 at 7:50 AM ^
I think it is a very real possibility that Jay is one day the HC of Michigan. He needs a bigger role to see how he does with that. Whether it be taking over a coordinator role when undoubtedly someone like Moore, Clink, or Minter becomes an HC, or getting his experience as an HC at a Group of 5 school (one his grandfather was HC and uncle was a coach at as well), wouldn’t be a bad start
December 5th, 2022 at 8:23 AM ^
I agree with you. Jay has been a jack of all trades position coach. Being successful at each stop. He's now a coordinator, and I think he will eventually share OC with Mike Hart. Obviously this means Moore and MW are gone, sadly.
Players love Jay and have said hes a HC in the making...he may leave for a bit, but I fully assume he will come back.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:37 AM ^
I think Moore will get a HC job this year or next, Hart gets promoted to co-OC (Weiss still calls plays).
Hart is probably the HC in waiting on staff, then some of the other Harbaugh tree gets time to prove it at other schools.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:33 AM ^
Jay is one of the best special teams coordinators in the country, is an elite recruiter, and has coached three position groups excellently. I do not think he needs to be a HC, DC, or OC before he is qualified to get the job (assuming it is in the future).
December 5th, 2022 at 8:34 AM ^
I think the next HC definitely comes from the Harbaugh tree. But right now the external options are... Partridge? Maybe "good shit Jedd"?
While I want to keep this staff together, we do need some of them to spread their wings elsewhere.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:10 PM ^
I firmly believe the next Michigan HC will be someone from this current staff.
December 5th, 2022 at 7:50 AM ^
Michigan first needs to be worried about any assistants and support that Poggi poaches on his way to Charlotte.
He's not going to gut the program. But if position coaches want to be coordinators, this is often how it works.
Edit: Which I might add is a big reason why co-coordinators, passing/running game coordinators, Associate HCs, all became so popular. You can pay guys more and you have fewer straight position coaches.
A guy like Clinkscale is already a co-DC and getting paid as such.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:29 AM ^
Poggi is working with a $2M budget for ten assistant coaches. I think he may poach a couple of staffers or an analyst, but Michigan can easily outbid him if he tries to take an assistant as OC or DC. For the most part, Biff couldn't even match their current salaries and that doesn't include the hefty bonuses they'll get.
Michigan assistants will be targeted for coordinator jobs at bigger programs than Charlotte.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:40 AM ^
It would have to be something like Denard for OC, which he seems way underqualified for. Denard is probably set at Michigan waiting for Moore to take a HC job, Hart move up to co-OC, and Denard take's RBs.
