WMU rumored to be interested in Jay Harbaugh

Local classic rock station just said WMU fired their head football coach and is looking at Jay Harbaugh as their next head coach.

Can't vouch for the accuracy of classic rock stations reporting on sports rumors.

His name has been mentioned, don't know anything beyond that.

But it would be a huge blow. He deserves it, for sure. You have to hear them out if you want to be a HC.

Especially if his goal is to take over for his dad one day.

Hey Recruits, come and be a part of a program that develops you in a way to compete at the highest level every year in CFB and also prepares you for the next level.  Hey Coaches, come and be a part of a program that is going to challenge you to be better and more than likely provide you an opportunity to coach at a higher level.  #THEMichiganDifference

It's a long way from being a position coach to a head coach at a major institution, particularly for a guy with no serious college or NFL experience.

I would think that Jay would have an opportunity to work his way up to an OC or DC and, depending upon his success level, take the next step.

Part of what makes JH so valuable is his experience at multiple levels and his contacts.  Even then, as a star player at Michigan and the in the NFL as a QB for a very long time, Jim had to start at smaller programs and work his way up.

I actually agree on Jim staying at M - at least through his contract - based on his comments before the season and then yesterday.

What is interesting to me is that I also thought Jim was a little crazy for looking at the Minnesota job at the time but..........he must have seen something that others didn't with the Vikings now 10-2.  Imagine what they could do with a non former-Spartan QB?

That makes no sense to me. Iowa has put TEs in the league for sure, but they don't exactly show out at the college level for the most part, and that offense is more of a dumpster fire than its ever been.

I guess if All wants a chance to show out --- and he sees what we have on deck in the way --- then i get the transfer, but just not getting the Iowa thing.

Chemistry with Cade is nice, but it doenst fix the issue where Cade is getting rocked every other play.

Assistants getting interviews is the cost of the program's success and culture overall. I actually enjoy seeing things like this.

But then, Terry Bowden never worked for Bobby except for one year as a GA, and Jeff Bowden is another great example of the aforementioned Peter Principle.  The dude went from OC at Florida State directly to a position coach job in D-II.

This isn't a comment on the quality of Jaybaugh as a coach, BTW, more about how uncommon it is for sons to be in any position to apply any leverage to their dads for a salary boost.

In a press conference interview, a question was asked about Sherrone Moore and whether he's ready to be a head coach.  Jim Harbaugh's response was, "Way past ready."  I'm not advocating for Sherrone's departure, but I think it does show what kind of view Jim Harbaugh takes: that is, coaches come, put in the work, move up and then move on.

And not a horrible scenario to have connections with the directional schools.

Mike Dana type that wants to show-out for the NFL in a grad transfer year, son might send him to dad.

Local recruit that's getting passed on the depth chart at Michigan, dad might send him to son.

Seems like Jay should get a coordinator job at a larger university first.   Not saying he couldn't be a head coach, but going from position coach to HC seems like a jump.  Like if Greg Roman got the job at Stanford Jay could be the OC there for 2 years and then get a HC job. That would seem more probable.  Some success outside of his father's direct orbit.  All reports of Jay on here and elsewhere are that he is a fantastic coach.

Sure. And I would fully expect them to at least make a call to Moore. However, you would think they had something solid lined up considering their timing of firing Lester, who was not doing a bad job.

Lester did do a bad job.  As a Western alum i grew to expect AT LEAST 1 personal foul per game. Lester was handed a very well stocked roster by MAC standards. Still they would finish around .500 in the conference and not get to Ford Field.  He was clearly learning on the job and surrounded himself with non-FBS level coordinators.   That with lesser recruiting is a recipe for disaster.

We saw the record fall toward mediocrity and his recruiting fell back to what it was with Bill Cubit before Fleck, maybe worse.   Lester failed to effectively recruit East of I-69 which became part of Fleck’s stronghold over EMU & CMU.  Instead he stayed mainly on the West side/IN/IL & MO.

I think it is a very real possibility that Jay is one day the HC of Michigan. He needs a bigger role to see how he does with that. Whether it be taking over a coordinator role when undoubtedly someone like Moore, Clink, or Minter becomes an HC, or getting his experience as an HC at a Group of 5 school (one his grandfather was HC and uncle was a coach at as well), wouldn’t be a bad start

I agree with you. Jay has been a jack of all trades position coach. Being successful at each stop. He's now a coordinator, and I think he will eventually share OC with Mike Hart. Obviously this means Moore and MW are gone, sadly.

Players love Jay and have said hes a HC in the making...he may leave for a bit, but I fully assume he will come back.

Michigan first needs to be worried about any assistants and support that Poggi poaches on his way to Charlotte.

He's not going to gut the program. But if position coaches want to be coordinators, this is often how it works.

Edit: Which I might add is a big reason why co-coordinators, passing/running game coordinators, Associate HCs, all became so popular. You can pay guys more and you have fewer straight position coaches.

A guy like Clinkscale is already a co-DC and getting paid as such.

Poggi is working with a $2M budget for ten assistant coaches. I think he may poach a couple of staffers or an analyst, but Michigan can easily outbid him if he tries to take an assistant as OC or DC. For the most part, Biff couldn't even match their current salaries and that doesn't include the hefty bonuses they'll get.

Michigan assistants will be targeted for coordinator jobs at bigger programs than Charlotte.
