This will not be a popular opinion, but I'll pass on Latwan Anderson.

Submitted by The Other Brian on
I went on a mini-tirade the other day about how it's unrealistic to expect all of the players on our team to be saints and to never run into any kind of trouble. I'm a realist above all else, and I understand that kids will be kids, even in college when they're supposed to be turning into men. However, I think a lot (read: almost all) of Michigan fans are glossing over Latwan Anderson. There is legitimate interest on his part, he wants to visit very soon (before the season starts), and the only reason Michigan has slipped is because the other schools have been in touch with him more (note that this is a non-contact period...but I digress). People see a top 40 safety prospect with serious interest in Michigan, and they start drooling. Expectations are tempered because he's at Glenville now, but it seems that everybody would welcome him with absolute open arms. Count me out. Let me remind everyone why he is at Glenville in the first place - he was kicked out of St. Ed's. Not suspended, not benched, flat kicked out. He was not welcome there anymore because he was involved in some kind of incident. If we're willing to look over that, okay. Austin White isn't Mr. Perfect either, but he's still at Stevenson. Latwan had to transfer to a new school. And although it was deleted by Mr. Beaver, there was a post on GBW last night by someone who attended the Gridiron Kings camp in Florida. Basically, an attitude adjustment is needed, and that's putting it lightly. Consider this: Ohio State is waiting on offering because they want to see if his character and grade issues improve. Think about that for a second. The school we all associate with pure evil and a haven for academically delinquent trouble makers isn't offering because of character issues. Do they have that luxury because they loaded up on DBs last year? Perhaps. But it's a top 40 player at their #1 school. They'll be damned if they let him go to Michigan...unless they see something that raises red flags. Say what you want about the Vest. God knows I hate him like poison and I can't wait for the day RR gets the best of him - but in recent years, he has been very careful with some of the characters he takes on. He took bad PR hits in his early years with Clarett and all the other criminals. But since then, they've been working harder to clean up. They cut Bradley McDougald and Devoe Torrence loose because of legal issues. Jamel Turner is hanging on by a thread while he heads off to Valley Forge Military Academy. One more slipup on his part, and OSU will cut him loose. This isn't "Michigan arrogance" speaking. He is supremely talented and athletic. If the Michigan coaches deem him good enough, and see any off the field issues as manageable, so be it. I'm not close to the situation, I don't have all the information. But the information I DO have makes me give great pause toward this particular prospect. I will now don my flame-resistant suit.

Seems like he's headed for WVU anyhow. So be it. I have no idea how RR and the staff regard Anderson in terms of character, but RR needs problem kids like a hole in the head. Having to dismiss Feagin was not a positive, regardless of the fact that he was not likely to be a major contributor.

An attitude adjustment in terms of being a dick? Or is he just arrogant? I understand your concern and thanks for the update.

I really don't think that you could ever say something for you to get completely negged. You're a very quality poster who actually has information unlike the majority of us. I always welcome reading your posts and I have to agree on the Latwan situation.

You said it: "This isn't "Michigan arrogance" speaking. He is supremely talented and athletic. If the Michigan coaches deem him good enough, and see any off the field issues as manageable, so be it. I'm not close to the situation, I don't have all the information. But the information I DO have makes me give great pause toward this particular prospect." Sure, I'd be a little worried about some off the field issues, but if the coaches can handle it, let's not pass on what sounds like a phenomenal football player.

An interesting implication of your argument is that him not choosing us might happen anyway. Consider the following: * he's seen other people get kicked off the team * he knows that he won't be treated like a snowflake * we have an S&C guy who's legendary at making people drop out If I had a chequered past, why would I want to go to Coach Rod's bootcamp?

I agree with you here that there is a standard to uphold in recruiting. A lot has been made of the issue of what sort of ship RR runs, and I'm actually glad that the Wermers comment came out about U of M football being more like a business than a "family" (which, like BS, I'll trust the guys who stay when they say that RR conveys a family-atmoshpere - it's football and there is inherently some tough love). I was sick of the way we were getting outmanned as time went on, and while I thought Lloyd was a great guy, the HORROR did it for me in cementing the desire for a new approach to things. I hate the Vest too, and agree that if they hold off and don't offer, it's more than likely because there are serious issues at heart with his character. I don't want a guy who's going to cutup and be out of the system in a year or two. In the same breath, while I'm all for the "character" guys, I want to win and win big. Not at all costs, but sometimes you have to take a few risks to find the right guy. If it means taking a flier on a talented albeit dysfunctional guy like Anderson when you see a potential All-American down the road, do it. I completely respect and understand where people are coming from when they talk about the character guys who stick with the program, but let's face it, not every guy is Tim Tebow. More often than not you get someone in the middle, and for my money, I want talent over attitude. Attitude can be taught quickly; talent can't. And given the comments about RR, I don't think he's going to tolerate anything less than solid determination and overall good behavior.

no reason to don the suit. you wrote a coherent and defensible post. most here seem to favor giving young kids (particularly those w/ supreme athletic gifts) second and third chances, but one can't argue that some kids aren't worth the trouble or deserving of another chance.

I hate to say this, but young men sometimes mess up. Are you not in favor of giving someone a second chance? To my knowledge it hasn't come out what Anderson did to get kicked out of St. Edwards. Judging by the name, it is a private catholic school. So it could have been anything. The schools have a right to toss you out on your ass even if you do something as small as getting into a fight. They won't throw you out of a public school for fighting, but they damn sure can at a Catholic School. I'm sure the coaching staff know what happened though. If the staff has continued to recruit him, then obviously they don't think it is that big deal (lets not make our decisions on what the vest does, because then we wouldn't have guys like Gardner). I'm just saying, before we judge the kid, lets find out what he did.

High schools - whether public, private or parochial - do not give star athletes the boot on a whim. It's very likely that he committed a pretty serious offense.

I'm thinking that particularly in this current economic climate, anyone who's either producing revenue or is committing a portion of their revenue to a private school is going to get to stay unless there are some moderately egregious issues going on. I went to Catholic school and don't have anything negative to say about it, but I'd have to admit that there is a definite drive to maintain funding.

I'll go on the record as saying that Anderson would be our most talented DB recruit if he were to commit. At the same time, I'm not enamored with his past. I'm all for bringing in quality kids. However, as Koyote said above, kids can get kicked out of private school for a lot of different things, and I'm not sure what the incident involved. Each recruit obviously needs to be weighed individually. Doghoused kids can right the ship (Shawn Crable) and Golden Boys can go sour (Justin Boren). Anderson could be a game-changing player at safety or cornerback, but I wouldn't risk team chemistry for him.

Brian, you made a statement, backed it up with good evidence = made a legitimate argument. It wasn't anything like "i don't want him he's not a MICHIGAN MAN" or "he's not that good anyway" or "he's a prima donna b/c he wants all this attention." I'm proud of you and your damn strong argument. I wonder if (and I think you suggested that) Michigan has slipped because it has been contacting Anderson less due to his behavior problems. Yes, RR had Chris Henry and Pacman Jones and is good at keeping players like them under control, but it's highly probable that he would rather not have to. I think it would take a bit more for a troublemaker such as Anderson to be a PR disaster, but if there is a high potential for trouble, then it isn't worth it.

In response to why Michigan has slipped on his list...it has nothing to do with Michigan being hesitant because of any issues he has and everything to do with UM's coaches actually obeying the rules of the "no contact period" while coaches at other schools ignore them. Think of a team that has risen on his list recently, and it's easy to figure out who's breaking the rules...

A "lack of contact" doesn't necessarily mean they haven't contacted him during the dead period. He could be talking about the entire recruiting cycle, as in "Michigan hasn't mailed me as much as MSU, WVU, etc." The point is, I would hope that if another kid says UM is moving up in his mind, other people wouldn't automatically think, "Well, UM must be doing something illegal."

Well said Brian. I've been in agreement with this for some time; I had spoken to a few kids who had played against Latwan and after talking about his talent they went on and on about his demeanor and attitude. I don't like it.

on him with the caveat that he doesn't go to a Big Ten school I'd agree. There is just something "off" with his whole recruitment. But if us "passing" meant he went to MSU,OSU or PSU then I'd just as soon have him here. If he wants to go to WVU that would work out wonderfully.

If he commits I hope Barwis can keep him in check just like he did Henry and Pacman while at WVU. If he decides to commit elsewhere I will not be that disappointed either. So, I still hope we get him, but realize that these character issues are something to be weary about.

This is something I have been saying for a while. Everything I've heard about the kid from the internets and around the area is that the kid is super fast, hits hard and has major problems. I would like to have him if Barwis can do to him what he did to Pacman, if no then no thanks

It is perfectly fine to be weary of a kid's past but I don't think it is fair to write him off completely without knowing all of the facts about his past. Kids make mistakes. I would be more concerned with his attitude going forward as opposed to his past actions barring his past actions being inexcusable. At this point in Rich Rod's stay at U of M, I will trust his judgement. If LA is good enough character wise for RR then that is fine with me. The same goes for the opposite. This being said, this was a great post by OBrian and it brings up some great stuff to discuss and keep in mind.

According to Sam Webb, Anderson was a dominating game changer at the recent camp in florida. Its tough as a fan to make any judgements because we just dont know as much as the coaching staffs.
