Why the Peppers to Speight to Chesson play?

Submitted by MGoFoam on

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed. What do we think was the purpose of that play? Clearly, we didn't need a trick play to beat Maryland. That means our coach wanted that play on tape. Why? Was it to tell other coaches (Urbz and Saban) that their corner better not cheat in when Speight is out wide because he might still get the ball? Or was it to set up some other play?

Getting things on film makes it even harder to defend the wrinkles you add (in a perfect world) -- now any pitch to peppers, just to be safe the cornerback/safety is going to have to turn the hips and run with the reciever, effectively blocking that guy to a point where he is likely out of the play.

Or maybe it's because every play matters.  Why didn't we need the trick play?  Was the clock reading 00:00?  If you think it was because of the score, I haven't seen any evidence that Harbaugh thinks like you.

Harbaugh did it because he can.....and probably to have internet people, such as op, to question the decision, thus starting a thread for no apparent reason and over analyze it without justification and true purpose. That or he wanted to have fun coaching football.

It's the only logical explanations.

Just enjoy all the Jim Harbaughness! You will sleep better at night.

It's the same reason you eventually want any more elaborate play like that on tape, especially if you know you can execute it, and that's to give the teams yet to play you another reason to lose some sleep and another thing they have to wonder about in their own preparation. Obviously, an opponent won't just focus on solely that, but just for them to know that you could bust that out if you needed to do so is sufficient.

...

Yes.

Help stop the massive flow of defenders selling out and reacting to whatever side Jabrill runs to. So hopefully against ohio state he can just run normal plays against a semi normal defense

My secret hope is that Peppers actually has a laser arm, and the point of the play was to get OSU to look at the (admittedly shaky) throw and be like, "nah, he won't be able to throw downfield against us when he has the ball."

You know what happens next.

Harbaugh does not seem like a hide-your-good-plays-for-later kind of guy.

He's more of a here's-another-fucking-thing-that-you-have-to-prepare-for-and-goddammit-there's-already-too-much-crazy-shit-to-prepare-for-how-am-I-ever-supposed-to-see-my-family-again? kind of guy.

On the Maryland broadcast they said that there are 20 different posiiton groups you have to prepare for when playing Michigan.

You aren't wrong, but there is also a cache of plays that Harbaugh still has in store.  He makes you prepare for what's on tape, the counters to what's on tape, and then he seems to always bring something that is completely new.  Good luck future opponents.

Yeah, you not only have to prepare for the million things you saw, but you also have to prepare for the additional million counters off of them.

And then at game time he'll come up with something completely new that you never saw before like the Train.

I'm growing more convinced that all this crazy Peppers stuff is just distraction for OSU, when he just lines up and runs zone read over and over to great effect. Showing them all this crazy stuff will just confuse them, and I love it.
