Why I'm not panicking.

Submitted by lunchboxthegoat on
I'm not panicking because I see last year and I see an abysmal team with nearly none of RR's people in place. We didn't have a quarterback, we didn't have his running backs, receivers, o-lineman, etc. We got some of those people in place this year and we retrained some of the better holdovers. We went from being the ugliest offense in the history of the program to very respectable. We're still #1 in the big ten in scoring offense before today's game. He's implemented his people and his scheme and we've made progress. We're not world beaters and the offense is not "amazing" like it will be at some point in the future. The defense has ONE player who is RRs player: Craig Roh. (you could argue Mike Martin.) There's NO WAY that the defense they've run has been fully absorbed with GERG only being in his position for less than a year. When we start to get RRs players in place on the D and we have some consistency (2 years at least in the same scheme) we will see progress. If we hold the line and stay the course and see RRs plan come to place we will see results. IF he gets his recruits in (minimum three years) and a scheme he's happy with on both sides of the ball (minimum two years from the start of this season) and we don't see results...I'll be on board with everyone who says this guy can't do it. But you cannot judge the man when he's working with pieces that just don't work. YES he may have been able to do better last year and maybe even this year with the talent he has/had BUT you don't half-try anything. You sell out for your beliefs and if you know what you're doing the naysayers will become fans when you see success. There's NOTHING schematically that I see that says "this won't work." The results through one year and the infiltration of SOME of his players speaks volumes. to quote 3EB: "I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend"

I've been following the Wolverines since 87 and I think the toughest thing is that we have never had to deal with adversity like this. We weren't gonna be that good with Lloyd, and when they blew everything up to install the spread it was gonna be really painful. I totally agree that 4-0 gave us a false sense of confidence. We are better than last year but the defense is still a sieve and the O is very inconsistent, as you would expect with a true frosh QB. Carlos looks good but the line is average. Skill positions are still average. Slot really hurt without Tay. I think that V Smith and Shaw should split carries with Carlos from here on in. Brandon is walking wounded and can't keep a handle on the ball.

Its unfortunate that we have to deal with this kind of adversity, but every program has a down point at some time. It wasn't a question of if as it is of when. Take a look at each of the programs in the top 10 right now. Each of them has had bad seasons in the past 20 years, and each of them have bad seasons in their future. Even Penn St and Ohio St. were down at points during this time. But things turned around and they will here as well. I read another comment the other day which said that RR was not a good fit for UM, and that is why the transition is so tough. I could not agree more. In time, things will pay off, and loyalty will be rewarded. Just keep the faith, and know that RR and his staff are just as angry as you are.

Its unfortunate that we have to deal with this kind of adversity, but every program has a down point at some time.
And when we finally get back to the level that we, as a fanbase, have come to expect - be it with RichRod or further down the road with another coach - it will be that much sweeter for having suffered a little bit.

I think Twisted was talking about what kind of team we were going to have in 2008 had Carr stayed. With the heavy losses we were going to experience on both sides of the ball even before the coaching change, it would probably have been Carr's weakest team. There was a lot of discussion about this during the 2007 season.

but it is difficult to argue that he would have continued to have success with the drop off in recruiting. They probably would have been better if folks like Mallett and Boren hadn't transferred but they still wouldn't have achieved the heights we want and expect. Ask any Florida State fan. I'm willing to give RichRod the benefit of the doubt, even in the face of a horrible loss like today. And I've lived through some really bad losses.

Truly I appreciate the optimism. I'd like to think I'm one of the more optimistic fans (at least within my circle of friends), but today's loss was inexcusable. There are some things that obviously need some work on the defensive side, and Rodriguez definitely needs some time to develop players for his system, but this was an awful Illinois team that should have been handled comfortably. As you do, I look forward to a brighter future as Rich Rod gets more players for his schemes in. I just wish all fans were as supportive of this team as you or me, but I don't blame anyone after this loss.

I have never felt such irritability about the fanbase since the old folks in front of us yelled that we quiet down during the last 2 mins. of the Horror. A loss brings some issues for all of us; but your post reminds that good days are ahead (thinking here of a more mature Tate, Denard reading coverages (but still otherwise fast), a bunch of microns zipping around the slot. I don't blame anyone for being angry after the loss either; but this is Michigan not Alabama. You need to give the guy enough time to get his Seniors in place. If it's bad after that...new AD can determine. Again, thanks for the effort.

Yeah I am not panicking either but I will say this, my hat got thrown across the room a couple of times and I am glad my kids did not hear some of the four letter words I allowed to eek out of my mouth. I was mad over the pitifully patheticly disgusting display that I saw while I sat in my chair, but I know that in the end it will all work out. Funny thing here is that I had tix to the game but due to a death in the family (the death not being the funny part) I was unable to attend. I would have logged more than 16 hours in the car and I would have been even more pissed off had I gone. I am glad I did not go.

Panicking was last year. This year I'm just depressed. We lost to Illinois. It sucks. But, I'll be watching next week and the next week and the next week, and hopefully it will get better. I'm a little troubled that only one of RR's defensive recruits has cracked the starting lineup with a defense playing this bad. I hope that's just because defense takes a lot to learn, but worried that it reflects a real lack of future for many of the defensive guys.

I agree completely. We went with RR because we wanted to get off the Carr track that won most games but was a steady stream of disappointment on the big stages. It sucks that it will take more than a year but it really is a total tear down. As the players here mature things could get better quickly. It is very difficult when so many have so little experience - the season is wearing on some of the new guys physically and mentally and this kind of a slump is not unexpected. Let's beat Purdue and take our chances from there.

You're overestimating the hire. We went with RR because everyone else said no, and Les Miles wasn't apparently good enough for Bill Martin to suspend his 3-Hour Tour. There wasn't this "we have to go away from Bo's Boys!" mentality; rather, it was "holy shit, we need a coach, and this guy's agent just called us."

So I can't make my own diary or forum topic. But basically, I have to reiterate, THIS IS WHAT WE EXPECTED when no emotions were involved this past summer. In a diary where most people agreed with me, I said we would go 6-6. So far I've been wrong (sort of) about Notre Dame, where I gave us a 45% chance but said ND would win, and about Penn State, where I thought we would pull an upset. The original post was http://mgoblog.com/diaries/realistic-2009-prediction We're right where I and many others thought we'd be, albeit with a slightly better offense (at times) and a worse defense. The rampant panic and "FIRE RR" hysteria on today's CIL was sickening. I wish I could give the OP more positive votes, we could use more calm thinking.

frustrates me. I always enjoy them because I don't have any U of M fans to watch the game with, so in theory I like the idea of sharing it with a bunch of other diehards. In practice, though, the onslaught of negativity is brutal, and not just when we're playing poorly. If Koger drops so much as one pass, even if we're up by 2+ TDs, twenty people seem to appear out of nowhere to bitch about how we won't make a bowl game. I know the mods are fighting an uphill battle against 500+ comments every minute, most of them saying things like "FIRE RR NOW!!111 were never going to win another game." I really appreciate their efforts, and Paul did a great job today in trying to tamp down the negativity. I don't remember the negativity being such a problem last year, but I don't know why that would be, other than that the blog's following has gotten so big that it has amassed many more idiots with keyboards.

I think the fanbase got all excited and such when we beat ND and started out 4-0. Those wins were not luck but it wasn't the most impressive set of wins either. You remember all the board being lit up with 9 and 3 predictions etc. I think someone actually posted about BCS possibilities. So here we are with some difficulty and odds are good your 6-6 works out...so be it. More calm thinking is indicated when you put into perspective that last year was 3 wins. It is a total rebuilding and that takes time. Let RichRod get his Seniors and if there is trouble then we can talk tenure. Thanks for the quality.

2010, as many have noted, will be our first time since 2007 that our defense has had the same Defensive Coordinator for consecutive years. That is something to be encouraged about.

I was afraid that this team was going to implode after the msu lost like msu always does after losing to michigan. after the iowa game, I just shrugged it off. After Penn State, i was concerned. Now, my nightmare has become reality.

Sorry to post this in this board post, but I am curious what people think regarding Brandon Minor. Is he hurt or not? If he is, why are we still using him in such odd situations (he came in the last 2 minutes to block - I believe)? If he is not injured, why aren't we using him more? I keep reading that he has a high ankle sprain, but why does he continue to play sparingly? I suppose he did come in for the one goal-line stop, but it just seems odd to me. Does anyone have any input on this? This article from Ann Arbor.com is a little concerning to me. http://www.annarbor.com/sports/michigan-running-back-brandon-minor-bare… EDIT: When has has played, he has played well.

Other than the 4th down carry at the goal line, the only plays he was in for was obv passing downs where he stayed in to block. He must not be able to run very well, or the coaches would have given him a chance. He did great picking up the blitz when he was in. I feel for him that he just can't stay healthy.

more damned games to make a statement. This team has the cards stacked against them but I sure as hell am not giving up on them. Let's get a big win next week and carry some momentum into the final two games!

I had no desire to get on here tonight and see burning buildings, rioting, and looting that I dreaded. I'm so glad that there are reasonable discussions to participate in. This year is "who we thought it was"(back in August). It's better than last year. Next year will be better than this year. And the year after, is going to be freakin awesome.

I had a unique perspective at the game today. I went with two HS buddies(both Illini grads). Next to me sat two older Michigan grads in their late forties(maybe fifty). As the game wore on, everything was "Bo would never let this happen", or "Bo would be making the team walk home if they played this way". Those two, drunk as they were, made one good point. The Big Ten, for better or worse, is won with DEFENSE. Some teams score a lot, some not so much, but the teams that finish near the top have lockdown D. My older Michigan brethren said that Brett Bielema is the worst recruiter in the league, but he can coach D....Wisconsin, BTW, is competitive once again. As the alcohol wears away, I realize that CoachRod must too awake from his hangover. His Big East model based on high octane offense will only take his Wolverines so far in a much different, more physical league. Somehow, someway.... in the not too distant future, the destiny of our team lies not on offense, but on defense. And until this issue is resolved, I am resigned to U of M being no better than mediocre. Sorry, but seeing the D in person today made me a believer in what the two older drunk M alums were saying.

Since we do have a porous defense, and had such a defense under Carr as well, I would prefer that we score a ton of points. Carr always acted like we had the 1997 Woodson-led defense back there, even when our defense was a seive. I don't think anybody has decided that we don't want a good defense, but the fact is we don't currently have the horses to field a good one, and the few top notch players we do have are working on their 3rd DC and 3rd system in 3 years. Unfortunately, time is the only thing that will solve our defensive problems. Hopefully some already on the team will make a strong contribution next year (e.g. Turner), and some other recruits will be attracted by the opportunity to get PT and have an immediate impact. More time in GERG's system will help as well. For now, however, we have to dance with the girl that we brought, and try to work around our talent/experience deficit.

I am not panicked and I don't remotely think RR should be fired (even if we go, shudder, 5-7). That said, we underachieved last year (even with all our problems, 5-7 was a realistic expectation) and now, we are underachieving this year (I think 7-5 was/is a realistic baseline with our talent and schedule). It seems most likely we'll finish 6-6, and that's not guaranteed, so while I am glad we're improving, and don't doubt we'll be better next year, the sad fact is we're underachieving. Again. And that is...depressing. Bartender, refill.

Now that I had a chance to down 12 beers and reflect... I'm still discouraged with the offense, but I'll still give them the BOTD. Tate has to settle down. He's ovewhelmed now, I can see it in his play. The Big 10 apparently doesn't suck as much as advertised.

MinorforPresident

November 1st, 2009 at 11:31 AM ^

You better hope he gets some people that can play defense in said recruiting efforts then. Because next year is shaping up to match this season at best if not a step back. Graham - the LONE bright spot = gone. Stevie Brown who has amounted to our best LB = gone. Ezeh and Mouton are not good LB's and Kovacs and Williams are not good safeties. So did I miss something to give me optimism for next season's defense? And I'm sorry but the combination of Shaw, Smith, Cox, and Touissant can't touch Brown and Minor. So ummm yeah we'll return to glory but it's going to be a while.
