Which NCAA records are within Denard's reach?

Submitted by aviksaroy on

I know it's only two games into the season, yadda yadda, so please, don't get upset.  After Denard set Michigan and Big Ten records in consecutive weeks, I was asking myself the question, what are the NCAA records for rushing yards and total offense by a QB, both for a single game and for a single season?  Here is what I could find -- these are for FBS (except the first one):

Rushing yards by a QB, single-game, Division I: 313 yards (Armanti Edwards, App St. vs. Richmond, 12/7/2007) (I can't seem to find the FBS record, but at least we know it's less than 313)

Rushing yards by a QB, season: 1,494 yards (Beau Morgan, Air Force, 1996)

Total offense, single-game: 732 yards (David Klingler, 716 pass 16 rush, Houston vs. Arizona State, 12/2/1990)

Total offense, season yards, per game: 474.6 yards (David Klingler, 1990)

These are the quarterbacks who have rushed for 200 yards and passed for 200 yards in a single game:

  • Marques Tuiasosopo, Washington vs. Stamford, 10/30/1999 (207 rushing, 302 passing)
  • Reds Bagnell, Penn vs. Dartmouth, 10/14/1950 (214 rushing, 276 passing)
  • Steve Gage, Tulsa vs. New Mexico, 11/8/1986 (212 rushing, 209 passing)
  • Brian Mitchell, La. Lafayette vs. Colo St., 11/21/1987 (271 rushing, 205 passing)
  • Antwaan Randle El, Indiana vs. Minn., 10/21/2000 (210 rushing, 263 passing)
  • Brad Smith, Missouri vs. Nebraska, 10/22/2005 (246 rushing, 234 passing)
  • Vince Young, Texas vs. Okla. St., 10/29/2005 (267 rushing, 239 passing)
  • Patrick White, WVa vs. Pitt, 11/16/2006 (220 rushing, 204 passing)
  • Denard Robinson, Mich vs. ND, 9/11/2010 (258 rushing, 244 passing)

As you can see, Denard Robinson is the only player in NCAA history to have both passed and rushed for over 240 yards in a single game (Vince Young and Brad Smith come closest to the mark).

It will be tough for Denard to hit Klingler's total offense records, but the QB rushing mark isn't out of reach.  He has 455 rushing yards already, which puts him on pace for 2,730. Obviously he won't hit 2,730, but the single-season record is "only" 1,494.

In other words, Denard has to gain 1,039 yards over the rest of the season -- 103.9 yards per game -- in order to break the NCAA single-season rushing mark for a QB.

It's very likely he'll hit 1,000 yards rushing.  Getting the season rushing record for a QB does depend on how much RR tries to limit him against the patsies and how much he changes up the game plan once we get into the conference season.

It will be tough for Denard to hit Klingler's total offense records

Absolutely no chance on God's green earth Denard - or anyone else, for that matter - comes close to Klingler's offensive records any time soon.  732 yards of offense in a single game is just absurd.  Think about it.  Of all the 200-200 people you have on the list, the closest is STILL 200 yards shy of the record.  Imagine Denard becoming the first person going for 300-300 - that's STILL over 100 yards shy of the record.  The first 350-350 guy?  STILL 32 yards shy of the record.  Basically, it ain't never gonna happen, but that's just because the record is off-the-charts insane.

I agree Denard is not likely to break Klingler's single-game total offense record, but that's because he's going to get half of his yards on the ground and if anybody is going to break Klingler's record it will undoubtedly be the QB in a crazy passing attack.  But I think there have been several teams in recent years capable of putting up 700+ yards on an opponent but without getting enough of a lead to rest their stars.  A few that come to mind are: that Miami, OH, team with Roethlisberger; those Utah teams with Alex Smith; those Louisville teams under John L Smith and Bobby Petrino; some of Texas Tech's recent teams; Hawaii with  Tommy Chang.

Mods, is there anyway we can condence Denard record type threads?  This may be the 23rd or 24th Denard related thread in relation to records.  Not a bad thing by any means but it's getting redundant.

and he OWNS that record in his second start. He was very close to breaking those loose like the 87 yarder. He will own that record very soon. He is just too explosive and can take it to the house on any given play with the right blocking downfield.

I wouldn't mind this, just because Denard would almost certainly not miss a game--Barry Sander's record of 2628 rushing yards equates to 219 ypg over the course of a 12 game schedule.  Denard is averaging 227.5 ypg through two games.

Denard isn't worried about these records, he's worried about the teams record and to me that is all that matters.  If he reaches some of those records along the way to a great season then that's an added bonus.  Denard Robinson for President.

I agree, Denard doesn't care about the records, as long as Michigan wins.  I think that's what's different from Forcier.  Forcier wanted to win and look good doing it.

That rushing record is really in reach, considering he'll likely grab more than 103 yds per game against the bad teams, and probably average right around that against the good teams.
