Where will Hoke be 4 years from now?

Submitted by rbgoblue on

I genuinely wish the guy the best, but I doubt he will be a HC at a major conference program, leading his top 10 team to a conference championship game.

That's the whole purpose of the football team-to win games. Michigan football players aren't brought in to win Nobel prizes; the players are only at Michigan because it is believed that the players' abilities will help win football games. The only reason you play the game is to win the game.

A mid major program, heading to a bowl game and looking at a 9 or 11 win season... Just like his other stops before Michigan.

My fear for Michigan is that we took a highly successful RR and had the worst run in school history with him. Then, we took Hoke who had built solid, competitive teams at two schools, and had the second worst run in school history.

Why have we become the place where good (ish) coaches go bad?

Coaches are only as good as their players. RR had a bad roster for the style he likes to play. He did a much better job of combing over Zona's roster before he took the job. Hoke also took over a terrible roster, Look at the attrition rate in the last two senior classes. You are absolutely correct in your above statement that Hokes completely rebuilt this roster for next year and whoever the coach is, is going to walk into a great spot.

Look at the roster and how many returning starters we have. We seriously only loose 1 player depending on funchess on O. On defense the only player that isn't replaceable is Jake Ryan. I thought looseing Clark would be a bigger problem, but the dline played pretty good without him last week. Shane Morris or Speight might even be an upgrade from how Gardner has played this year. Plus the running game is looking good and we get Isaac who could be better than all our other running backs.

Why have so many people said, "defensive coordinator somewhere before he gets another head coaching job"? He's never been a coordinator so what magically makes him qualified to coordinate a defense after thirty years of not doing it?

Quality control at "the Clapper" factory.

Just kidding! I actually like Hoke and wish he had been more successful at Michigan, but don't see him as a hc at a major D-1 program. I wish him the best though.

feels typecast as the dopey, clappy nice guy.  I think he'll be coaching basketball.  He'll be considered an innovator as he will be the first bball head coach to wear a headset.  However, he won't be able to pull off a suit (too hot in the gym for him), so he will look brilliant in a tuxedo t-shirt.

1- hc at ball st or someplace like Ohio u, miami (ntm), marsahll, western kentucky, etc doing the Frank Solich 2- DL coach at a p5 program or for an NFL team (Detroit under teryl Austin?) 3- taking the Bump Elliott/ Earle Bruce route and staying in Ann arbor or the AD in some cheer leading / fundraising / media role. But he seems too young and feisty to not go after another coaching gig.

He could be a HC again at a smaller program or just be a DC at a power 5 conference team, but probably not a contender. While I want him gone yesterday I wish him luck. Was disappointed when he was hired but got on board and hoped it would work out. It has not so time for a change.

He turned around programs everywhere he coached except Michigan.(he kind of turned around Michigan too, just not enough progress and wins). I'm sure there will be Colleges that will look at that. It depends what he might want to do at this point. Michigan was his dream job, so it might take time to get over it not working out before taking another head coaching job at some other school. Might do himself some good to take some time off before he starts his next job. I can see him being offered a DL position in the pros or head coach back at Ball State.

were skeptical if he had the chops and coaching talent to succeed in his "dream job". But ultimately he couldn't get out of his own way! I think 20 years from now he will be remembered as a steward of the program similar to the way Tommy Amaker is viewed by any of us. I feel for him, but his own stubbornness led to his demise!

I don't get the historical revisionism when it comes to Rich Rod. Hoke has won significantly more games on aggregate. While his record against ranked teams sucked, so did Rich Rod's, and Hoke still did better in that regard, fielding significantly more competitive teams. People like to talk about the glories of the Rodriguez offense. An offense that could only put up points against teams like Illinois. Does anyone here remember the Gator bowl? The offensive tire fire that that game entailed? Defense has improved dramatically, offense, despite this year, has been acceptable. Hoke isn't good and should probably be fired for lack of development. But please, kindly shut up with this bullshit about how great Rodriguez was. To a man, you all called for his head, and for good reason. Don't pretend it wasn't the case. He failed. Regardless of how he's doing now, it didn't work out here.

Some guys are just made to be assistant coaches (Norv Turner, Dick LeBeau, Mike Munchak, Lane Kiffin & Paul Chryst maybe, etc.) and I oftentimes wonder if Hoke is just that, a position coach.  Give him a small group of players, let him coach them up, love them like sons, and let someone else deal with the pressure of wins and losses.  Let him deal with guys who've just been lit up by a DC or a HC when they mess up, and let him do the "coaching" on the sidelines while someone else "wears a headset" and manages the game.  I wonder if Hoke will find that to be his calling and will in 4 years from now be the DL coach at Virginia Tech, or Missouri, or something like that.

Or will he determine that he is absolutely in his mind a Head Coach?  If so, he'll be in the Mountain West, the MAC, Conference USA, etc. where the pressure of running a PROGRAM isn't there as much.  Frank Solich is doing ok for himsel (6 wins this year, 7 last, 9 the year before, 10 the year before that) with a 72-56 record at the real *Ohio.

Either way, he's a good guy and good luck to him.  But he's just not a good enough coach to be successful at a school with the demands like at Michigan.

Hoke brings Big Boy to life and is credited with reviving a stagnant but historical brand.  Big Boy will rebound across the country and around the world.

back to his roots as a parole officer?  or coaching up / mentoring new batches of sons as a high school football coach?   i can guarantee he will not be HC anywhere above MAC-type programs - if MAC schools were desparate enough to bring him back given his qualifications, his career record as well as obvious outlier seasons 2008 and 2011.

his players seem to like him, seems like nice dude, unfortunately just an overmatched and totally lost deer in headlights at this level - hokes collected millions of dollars from um so hell be just fine, he should quietly head back to high school until his social security kicks in

Hopefully being successful at whatever he's doing. Why are people piling on a guy who gave us his best effort. He was in over his head and failed miserably, why would we wish ill will in him? Kind of classless IMHO

Not only a good man, Hoke is a great recruiter.  (Kind of reminds me of Ed Orgeron in some ways).

I think Hoke's tragic flaw is this:  he loves too much, and has too much faith in those he loves around him.  He trusts his assistant coaches, he trusts QBs, and never stops believing in them.

It's what makes him a great guy.  One that kids want to play for, that mothers want to entrust with their sons.

He stuck with DG, and Funk and Jackson to a fault, to his pwn peril.  Never threw any of them under the bus0.  From all the accounts I have read he doesn't over-rule his Coordinaters, and shows them that trust by not wearing the headset.  He feels his job on game days is to measure the mood of his team, and keep them on track, with whatever they had practiced uring the week.  It's a model that can work- but for various reasons- has not.

Whoever coaches Michigan next year will be in excellent shape, providing they can develop a competent QB who doesn't turn the ball over and can occaisionally make plays.
