Where to watch M vs NU in Budapest, Hungary?

Submitted by badjuju81 on

I will be in Budapest, Hungary next weekend.  Any tips on a sports bar where I can watch the Michigan - Northwestern game?  Otherwise, i'll have to listen on WTKA via the internet in my hotel room.  Thanks in advance for any help!  GO BLUE!

Thanks everyone!  I will try the BTN2Go on my Android tablet.  It's through Verizon and I have an Xfinity login.  I have a VPN, but I need to work out the bugs in advance.

And it's the 21st effing century.  Budapest isn't some 3rd world toilet (like Columbus!).  It's a national capital with lots of industry and culture.  It's one of the most happening cities in Europe.

Huh? I didn't notice anyone shitting on Budapest...

Anyway, you can use BTN2Go International without a VPN. Not sure if BTN2Go works the same way but for the international package only games aired on BTN are live. If a game is on another network you have to wait til about midnight Saturday night EST.

NFL games in Budapest and start there. You can also try the M (or less likely) NW alumni associations and see if they have a facebook page or contact information.

In any case, if you go to a bar, get there early and explain what game you would like to watch and see if they can set you up in a section of the bar. Good Luck.

Haha, "do you have the Big Ten Network?" isn't something you hear every day in Budapest, I'm sure.

In all actuality, BTN2GO is the best bet...but best of luck to the guy. I'd spend more time trying to get someones account number and an HDMI cord to hook it up to my TV.

Humblebrag European city and did just what I suggested and they do get the BTN if they get whatever the U.S. Sports package is at the bar.

It's highly unlikely that they will know the BTN by name, but if it's a bar that is used to people asking about college and NFL games, they will hopefully at least look at the guide for you.

How many people on here do you think have been to Budapest? You ask like it's Phoenix or something, lol.

My suggestion. Google. It has everything.

Yeah I laugh when people say "Google it" to everything as if it is always the magic answer.

Google is not a God-Head just waiting to answer all your questions, folks.  it's just an index to stuff already posted on the internet.

Sometimes it's better to actually ask people that will probably know the answer to your question, especially on a highly-specialized place like MGoBlog, than to wade through 12,000 irrelevant hits that happen to have the keywords Northwestern, Michigan, or Budapest in them.

I live in Phoenix and I have been to Budapest. Budapest happens to be a fantastic city, one of my favorites in Central Europe. Great food, excellent nightlife, beautiful city, historic (in that post Soviet kind of way), and make sure you go to the outdoor hot baths. Oh, and really CHEAP! You end up spending less than $20 per person for an excellent dinner… Off the top of my head, sports bars I can't help you with; however I am sure they will be relatively easy to find.

Ditto all of that, but you forgot to mention tremendous wine, very reasonably priced. Burgundy was restocked with Hungarian vines after a major meltdown. Many of the great wines are unavailable in the US. Klass, if I recall correctly, is a great restaurant, central Budapest, with a wonderful selection by the glass, carafe, or bottle. €20 will get you something wonderful.

...at least in this forum:

1.  If you're going to Budapest, you're probably a seasoned traveler and if you are unaware on how to get US televised sports events while overseas...then well, not much that we here can do to assist you.  UNLESS there's an abundance of travelers on MGoBlog who are very familiar with Budapest.

2. You've heard of name droppers?  This feels a lot like place dropping to me.  SRSLY?

/Said in my best Thurston Howell III voice...

"Uhh, Lovey...get me a G &T and meet me in the study in our Budapest summer home...I want to watch the MICHIGAN game....."

Maybe he is not bragging and is just going to be in Budapest and wants to watch the game.

What's he supposed to say?  "I will be in some place in Eastern Europe that may or may not be really cool . . . that's not really the point . . . I just want to watch the Michigan game.  If it turns out to be a really cool place, will you still tell me anyway?"

it's on prime time in budapest so anywhere will be difficult.  soccer will be on most places.  try champ's sports bar, but again you are probably out of luck.

Be sure to have veal or chicken paprikash with knockerel (hungarian for spaetzle) as well as some goulash while you are there.

We have the largest alumni base and people could have legitimate reasons to be overseas.  He could be in the armed services, with the State Department, or on real business.  It isn't as if he said, "Hey, do you know where I can park my private jet in Budapest and party with U of M alums?"

I caught the bowl game vs. South Carolina when I was there a couple years ago. It was playing at a small German pub, which we found out through the local Michigan Alumni Association rep. If you're not a member, perhaps you can email the general email at [email protected] and they can point you in the right direction? Good luck.

I was just on Costa Rica and was concerned that I wouldn't be able to watch the UNLV game on BTN2Go as people told me I would need BTN International.  Since it was just UNLV I decided to wing it and hope for the best rather than signing up for a new service and BTN2Go worked the same as it did at home. Not sure if there are different rules for Hungary than Costa Rica.

Forget watching the game and watch the waitresses there... can't remember if they have a TV. Check the schedule of the American Forces Network, they carry college football and AFN Europe is in most packages.

Do you have a laptop?
If so, do you use Google Chrome as your browser?
If so, do you have the AdBlockPlus application on Chrome?
If so, disable AdBlock (right click on the icon, Options, disable).
Use the link below for FirstRowSports. If the cursor doesn't become the hand icon, which means you can't click on the game you want, just reload.
My bet is that they're will be three links for the game, and my experience (I live in Sicily) is that that Link 1 is usually the most reliable. Hope this helps, and hope you enjoy Budapest.

P.S. I have Windows 7 on an eight-year-old laptop, and FirstRow streams like a dream for me.
