What is your pre-game tradition/ritual?

Submitted by MGoClimb on

We've all got 'em. Yes, they're necessary. No, they're not crazy.

With Michigan football kicking off tomorrow, I want to know what other members of the MGoBoard need to do before a game to help Michigan to victory.

Big, small, or unique, no tradition or ritual is insignificant. Remember, it's not crazy if it works.

Let's hear it! (unless it requires secrecy)

something that has a connection to the game somehow.  Like cooking tail gate food that is from the opposing team's state, sort of like devouring the competition.  Then beer.  And more beer.

thread, the least you could do is tell us your tradition...

I always do pulled pork sandwiches in the slow cooker for the game, and I always drink an all-day IPA. This year it is Flying Dog Easy IPA, delicious...

Put beer in the fridge. Get food, typically subway. Put on my jersey for superstitious reasons. I always play that days game on NCAA 14 before it happens. Then, watch Gameday until kickoff.

It used to be to get woken out of bed with hard alcohol.

These days I wake up, park some cars on my front lawn and entertain whatever friends happen to be in town for the game

Much of what passes for "ritual" around here depends on whether or not we're going to be at the game.

If we are going into Ann Arbor, then it is basically falling out of bed, downing some quick breakfast and coffee and putting on the gear and it is off to the tailgates / game.

If we're going to be at home, like for most away games, then I'll usually make a full English breakfast once everyone is up and then get my grill ready for a day of good eating, having begun to marinate meats as early as Thursday. There is usually a beer run sometime in the 11 AM timeframe as well, one of the advantages of having the store at the end of the street. The "M" flag will go up usually around 9 AM as well.

I only drink beer that has been brewed in the state of Michigan on game day Saturdays.  Usually Bell's lager of the lakes.  It's a tasty light all day drinkable beer.

Lots of MMB hype marching music, followed by a mentally cleansing walk before kickoff.

Also, make sure DVR is set with +3 hour buffer at the end when youth football games overlap with M games.

We are making our first attempt tomorrow to actually tailgate. I'm wondering.... Pioneer or the golf course? What time should we arrive?? I'm thinking 830/9am. I have no idea if that's too early or too late. Help please!

I love to blast the fight song as soon as I wake up.  Traditionally, this does not go over well with other people in the house, but I do it anyway.  After that, I usually grab a quick bite and start tailgating.

The other ritual is that I always wear the same clothes to the games.  I also wear the student T-shirt from my senior year.  The thing is starting to get a little wear, but it's now part of my tradition.  I also have a lucky pair of glasses I bust out for the big games.

Yup, pathetic, but still fun.

I start of with some hype videos culminating in the Rilo Kiley one. (Never forget) then I have a rule about drinking. I can drink the hour before the game then during the game no drinking. Towards the middle of the 4th quarter I pour two shots if we win I share the shots with someone if we lose I take them both. When I am in Ann Arbor the Brown Jug for breakfast then Ashley's then the Big House

I have to get a pedicure before noon tomorrow - need blue toe nails!  I've done that prior to the first game of the season since I moved to NYC almost 10 years ago.

My boys (9 and 10) and I usually start the day by hanging the Michigan flag in front of the house.

Then I'll try to get a workout in ahead of the game.

Put on my favorite Michigan hat and then its gametime.
