What should we realistically expect from the DTs Bowl Season?

Submitted by realblue on December 13th, 2019 at 5:05 PM

So as we all know, the DTs struggled this year at times, and especially against the big O-Lines of Wisconsin and Osu.

The general refrain seems to be that M needs more size at DT. But for now, the team has the players that it has. So I pose a serious, if not stupid, question: how much bigger and stronger can a d1 DT get in 30 days?

Obviously these guys are who they are as far as how much weight they can hold, and they won't suddenly all become Mone 2.0. But I'm generally interested in the board's opinion on how much they could actually improve and get stronger in the month from The Game to the Bowl Game, now that they don't have a game every week for a while and theoretically could be spending alot of time in the weight room.

Can a guy like Hinton or Kemp realistically pack on a few more lbs of muscle and add strength in that month span? And would it be enough to make any difference against a big O-line like Bamas? Educate me.

Not much, lets just hope the Freshman flash here and there.

Mazi Smith has natural brute strength , so lets just hope the coaches are starting to trust him enough to get more reps.

I think Hinton & Smith are can't miss starters sooner than later

I would just like to see some of those guys play. It seems every bowl season we hear rumors about guys taking a step forward and showing promise in practice, but when the game rolls around, they don't even play, so let's see a little youth movement. I would love to see Villain, Mazi, Hinton, and even Paea get some significant reps, and let's see Barrett give Hudson some rest.

I'd love to see a rotation with Hinton and Smith getting significant reps against Bama's O Line. I think the experience will really help going into next year. My expectations are pretty low.

Hinton can improve with bowl practices. Probably isn't getting much bigger (doesn't need to, really), but can get better technique. Kemp is who he is, unless he's been hampered by unreported injury and has time to heal up now. I wonder if we will see Mazi if he's making some progress through bowl practice.

If I'm being honest I don't expect much difference from the OSU/Wisconsin games. Alabama has one of the better offensive lines in the country, and consistently has for the last decade. While I do think Michigan can make a couple of stops, I have a hard time seeing them consistently stop Alabama's rushing attack. Especially if Najee is playing. An undersized Michigan DL going up against a bunch of guys with prototypical NFL size, almost all of whom will be playing on Sundays before too long? Yikes....

But by the same token, Alabama's defense is not the same defense its been for the last decade, and could be even more shorthanded if guys sit out. I do think Michigan can put up points through the air on those guys. Especially if Nico and DPJ play. The question is whether or not it will be enough. Shall we say I have my doubts....

I'd love to win, but I just hope they can keep it close, no injuries, and get some of the freshmen like Hinton and Smith some meaningful reps. As long as it doesn't burn their RS, getting experience against a team that is the caliber of Alabama's will be very helpful for their development. Win or lose.

I think they start off ok... but they’ll begin to fall off in the second half.

this is where strength and conditioning play a big part; I don’t think we’ve had the stamina to play with a team like Alabama in a long time.

however if M pulls off a win... it WILL be a program changing win! I hope they do...

Sadly, I expect our DTs to get mauled. But I just want to see flashes of talent from Mazi and Hinton. Just anything to show that their technique, strength, conditioning and understanding of DB's defense has improved. Especially from Hinton. I've still got big hopes for those two next season.

I'd like to see one heavy and strong guy in the middle, but the size fixation on this site is ridiculous.

Look at OSU's D line. Three sub-300 guys and they do fine. At a higher level, look at Aaron Donald and Ed Oliver.

We need *better* players. Bigger is fine but not the whole issue.

they dont necessarily need more size - they do need more impact players at DT.  maybe theyre bigger bodies, maybe not.

i had been hoping for greater overall #s in order to increase the chances of developing impact players like hurst, glasgow.  dominant 1v1 DTs totally alter a defense vs simply rotating a few 300 pounders who are average performers and just guys.

and im fine with hulking up 250 DE prospects to DT since thats often the best route, provided a few 280 lb high school DTs also find space in that room.  i just dont like to see them short on options (or relying on MAC level talent)

Expect them to get pushed around like they have by every other good OL.

This idea of trying to turn 250 lb high school DE into legit interior DL is insane.  Yet not one true DT in the 20 class.  Weak.

The defense is going to get mauled in this game.

Their only chance may be to stack 8 or 9 men in the box. Take your chances on Bama throwing over the top. If they try to play straight up, it's going to be bad.

This is a terrible match up.

Bama hasn't lost more than two games in a season since 2010 when they were 10-3. 2013 is the last time they have lost two consecutive games.

It's a terrible match up.

Very little. The bigger hope, I guess, is that over the course of 5ish months (aug-Jan 1) the young guys have come a long way and the bowl practices are finishing touches for two guys that are ready to take the step of playing and being productive.

If we pumped them full of drugs and the only thing they did was strength train they still wouldn't make a ton of progress in 30 days. Add to that; 1. We aren't pumping them full of drugs, 2. they have other shit going on ie holidays, school, hooking up with girls, and 3. they are going to be practicing a good bit doing other activity other than strength training...well...you aren't going to gain a lot.

The hope is they have developed a lot over the year and they have had a little break after the osu game and feel refreshed and they are good enough to play.

They arent getting significantly bigger or stronger in a month. What we can hope for is they learn to stay gap sound, understand what Bama is going to do to attack them, and trust the guys behind them to make plays. The DTs not getting washed is pretty essential part of running this undersized defense, and our only hope is that they can penetrate before the power run blocking can get set up and disrupte what the offense tries to do on the early downs.

This cannot be a serious question as posed, can it?

No, no measurable difference in size or strength in a month. What you saw against OSU is what you will see. Now, what can happen is DB coming up with a scheme more tailored to Alabama, but it seems like whatever you take away, they'll do something else. Much like OSU.

So, to stay close, we have to score. They will put up 45-50 on this D.
