What are College Football's Most Classic Uniforms
Mates,
Michigan has the absolute best uniforms, helmets (!!) and fight song on the planet for any sport at any time.
That said, thinking about playing Washington reminded me of the first time I'd seen them live in the Rose Bowl, lo those many years ago. I thought then (and do now) that their uniforms and colors were excellent, classics which is nice to see they haven't changed hardly at all.
I think of other teams with some pretty classic uniforms such as USC, UCLA, 'bama and PSU, though granted those last two are pretty bland. I'd even grudgingly say that ohio has classic uni's.
Who else would you think of? Texas? LSU? UGA?
So, simple question tonight: What are the best, most classic uniforms in CFB?

Oregon, so original, historic and traditional. /

i would add that i think there is a direct relationship between how frequently teams change their uniform styles and how awful they are. oregon being a/the prime example. sparty, too, though they were okay 30-40 yrs ago.
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:05 PM ^
I can see that. Oregon has a few that I like, but I'm not a fan of the constant change. Seems gimmicky and schtick to me.

I actually think MSU had a good thing going when Saban was there, but they cant make up their minds I guess.
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:49 PM ^
MSU's uniforms aren't bad. They change things up from time to time but nothing too gimmicky.
The guys wearing them, and the coaching staff? That's a whole other thing...

MSU’s uni’s are good simply because very few teams have green as a color and when the do they match it with yellow like OR and Baylor and then make crazy uni’s or orange like Miami. Going with white is crisp.
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:41 PM ^
That green is so fugly. There's a reason so few teams use green.
January 3rd, 2024 at 11:01 PM ^
They say geniuses choose green.
January 4th, 2024 at 9:30 AM ^
Do they.
January 4th, 2024 at 9:44 AM ^
But they didn't pick it.
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:15 PM ^
I think Oregon is the exception to your rule there XM. They only got good once they started fussing with their uni's every week. They're contenders every year, it seems. Of course I've only been following college football since the mid-aughts.
Plus, Oregon was the OG in terms of changing their uniforms every week. It's become part of their thing and it works for them. Also helps that Phil Knight (Nike CEO) is a big supporter of the program.
Maryland on the other hand... they've been trying for over a decade to be Oregon-east. It's not working.

Florida state
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:35 PM ^
USC/UCLA when they play each other in particular.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:37 PM ^
and they both wear their home/color uni's. agreed, and we should do this when we play ohio.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:39 PM ^
Absolutely with you there, ive ALWAYS wanted to see Blue vs Scarlett in The Game
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:43 PM ^
pretty sure the reason that teams developed road 'whites' was because the games (and assumedly all the highlights) were for decades only available in black and white so you had to have contrasting uni's. you see some of those old B10 images of michigan playing....who knows, because the pics are black and white so the other team is in some variation of gray- could've been iowa, IU, purdue, whoever.
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:17 PM ^
It was also important that the uniforms sound different for the radio as most of the games were not televised.
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:26 PM ^
You mean Maize and Blue against Ruby and Porpoise?
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:08 PM ^
Just like when the Red Wings played the Leafs in Michigan Stadium for the Winter Classic
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:01 PM ^
I actually think OSU’s road white uniforms look better than their home scarlett
January 4th, 2024 at 11:15 AM ^
And I think the old (what I mentally refer to as "Woody stripes") sleeve stripes look better than the current set.
January 4th, 2024 at 11:44 AM ^
They wear those stripes in the CFP usually. They did against Georgia last year.
January 4th, 2024 at 12:56 PM ^
I love it for them. They share a city. But not for UM/osu. I don't ever want to see that ugly red jersey in the Big House.
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:05 PM ^
USC cheerleader uniforms!
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:38 PM ^
Michigan's uniform is significantly better than any other. But Penn State's home uniform is pretty sharp.
January 4th, 2024 at 11:19 AM ^
I look at them (and those of Alabama), and I think Dullsville. They're not classic; they're just unimaginative and cheap. Also, put some numbers on the shoulders of Alabama; you can afford it. The same goes for the logos on Oklahoma's helmets; they look like every year, the equipment manager goes to Menards and buys out the supply of white mailbox stickers in white for O and U.
My 2 cents, your results may vary.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:39 PM ^
Texas whites are the cleanest in my opinion.
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:04 PM ^
Texas is the only team that manages to make orange -- the ugliest color -- look good
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:11 PM ^
It helps that its the perfect shade of "burnt" orange. Great name for a color too.
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:21 PM ^
Tennessee Fighting Creamsicles! YUM!
January 4th, 2024 at 12:15 AM ^
do we know why the orange on their helmets is so much darker than their jerseys?
January 4th, 2024 at 1:35 AM ^
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think the U has one of the better color combos in college football with their orange and green...
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:52 PM ^
Clempson does have the ugliest Unis. Just awful with that stupid cat print on the helpmate. But Illinois make the orange look cool
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:40 PM ^
I hate to say it as I hate most of these teams but aside from who you already mentioned, I’d say Stanford (roll on you bears, fuck stanfurd), Iowa, ND (🤮), Florida, Clemson, Oklahoma, Nebraska
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:42 PM ^
Classic? Penn State and Alabama. Easy call.
How could anyone say Oregon? Was that a joke? They change sooooo much.
Best? Michigan - when it's Blue over Maize! Like we just saw.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:42 PM ^
Color + White is generally boring but often seen as classic (PSU, Texas, Alabama). I am partial to a two color combo (UofM, OSU, ND, USC, UCLA, FSU).
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:43 PM ^
i left out ND but you are at least the second person to mention that uni and that is pretty classic.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:47 PM ^
Then ND uniforms might be my second favorite. Their helmet is my second favorite.
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:53 PM ^
ND has to be the best besides Michigan.
The Gold helmet and navy blue combo is classic.
The green alternative unis are iconic.
If you have to pick a rival’s unis, ND is far better than grey or white OSU.
The entire USC Trojan look is also great when you combine it with the whole Greek Trojan look of the additional cast of characters.
Oregon is the worst.
Alabama and PSU are classic only because of the team’s’ history and their simplicity.
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:51 PM ^
Blue jerseys or green?
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:08 PM ^
I like both about the same.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:45 PM ^
I think you covered most of them other than Auburn and Notre Dame. I hate ND but the gold helmet is iconic whether I like it or not.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:48 PM ^
and somewhat like auburn, arizona has some pretty good uni's, at least the classics that i remember from the 80's and 90's, and what i think they are wearing now. i think they wear alternates a fair amount, but the originals are pretty nice
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:56 PM ^
Yeah those Arizona jerseys are pretty solid. I didn't mind the vintage Maryland Terps look before Under Armor threw up on them. 80's and 90's Canes look was decent too.
January 4th, 2024 at 11:22 AM ^
The logo is superb.
January 4th, 2024 at 8:14 AM ^
Am I the only one who doesnt get the hype of NDs "classic" helmets? Florida State, Boston College, Army, Purdue, and Vanderbilt also have gold helmets so they're not the only ones.
January 4th, 2024 at 9:55 AM ^
blue and orange is a great color combo. I like UVA's jersey as well. I think it's tricky for this topic because normally "classic" means "good in the past" and not necessarily "looks like the past." There's a reason most of the answers are blue bloods.
For instance, something like Temple's uni has that classic look, very similar to Alabama. Georgia Southern is like a blue version of Bama. But no one is going to say "oh yeah, Georgia Southern, great classic uniform."
I would say one team missing right now that no one has said is Navy. Army is good as well, but Navy just has that classic look to them more than the other service academies.
January 3rd, 2024 at 8:57 PM ^
"classic" (but boring) - Alabama and Penn State and USC
I like the symbolism they go for now with Army v Navy but I rarely like how they actually LOOK
I've always been partial to Air Force's
most of the rest are boring and Michigan's uniforms are, objectively speaking, the best by far.
