Western Michigan Snowflakes - The Offense

You guys know the drill. This is the offensive snowflakes thread, but try to keep the comments less than offensive.

Great way to play pretty safe in Game One, but still score a boatload of points.  I like the plan, they executed it well.  Hopefully they let the offense unfold as the season goes on, but at least they have some lightning strike plays and players.  Go blue

Hope the OL can continue to get decent push against better D lines.  There were flashes here where there were solid holes, but it felt like the RB's were improvising a lot.

Impressive running game.  Haskins and Corum look terrific.  Cade played well within himself.  Ronnie Bell's one handed catch was epic and should have counted.

The reality is we won’t know how good they are until they are forced to throw the ball, which is probably next week.

The good news is that they were able to run the ball today, which hadn’t always been a given against teams they should be able to run the ball against.

yeah well see as the competition improves.  QB looked fairly confident which hasnt always been the case so thats something to build on.

corum is a bright spot.  theyve lacked that quickness and overall ability at RB for years.  heres hoping he sees similar touches in bigger games.  haskins a nice player but corum appears to have what theyve been missing.

41 on D looks promising too.  not bush 2.0 and i didnt zero in on his play but saw some explosiveness, especially compared to rest of front 7.  uw should be a good test for the fellas

We can haz 2 quarterbacks???

Seriously though, seeing a well thrown deep ball has been missed for so fucking long. It feels good.

The offensive line held up great and created some massive holes for the RBs. Speaking of which, we have a great 1-2 punch in Haskins and Corum.

Play calling seemed coherent if not a bit too conservative at some points. First game caveats apply.

No turnovers!

Receivers remain a question mark. I wonder who will step up in the absence of Ronnie, but I have faith someone will. Here's to hoping Bell will be back soon.

"...seeing a well thrown deep ball has been missed for so fucking long."

Yes! Such a relief to not see the ball landing on the ground 5 yards past a deep receiver, or hitting the ground at a guy's feet. Yes, it was against a questionable pass defense, but how many times has that been the case and it came out a lot different than today?

EDIT: And Ronnie Bell's beautiful one hand catch only happens because the ball is thrown with nice touch off his outside shoulder, right where it needed to be. If that's a bullet off the back of the DBs head, or 12 feet into the sidelines, that catch doesn't happen.

I think we're boned next week. Washington has a legit elite secondary, and I don't think McNamara can make the necessary throws, especially without his safety valve Bell. But JJ is too raw still. Haskins looked dependably good. I thought the line played well overall. If you get Corum wide, good things are going to continue to happen. This feels like an 8-4 unit.

Yeah where's all this evidence of what Cade CANNOT do? He was essentially perfect today, on mostly easy passes but a couple with a higher degree of difficulty. He's been a statistically very good passer in the past, too, except for when he was put back into the game against PSU and was too injured to actually play. Seems to me like he can do a whole lot!

I think a lot will depend on if they can use stuff like the sweeps we saw to get some chunk plays out of the running game.  They still don’t seem to want to push the ball downfield, which might be strategic in a game where they didn’t need to or might indicate a problem.

For me wrt Cade it’s not about making the throws.  It is about knowing right away what the right throw is.

I'm hoping the play calling was conservative. Gattis has stated that he really wants to stay with the run more this year, and he certainly did that (300+ yards rushing). If Western has a strength it is in the D Line and the results running into it early were spotty. Colley will play on Sundays. When they needed to establish a solid lead he opened up a bit and started exploiting the edge. With that success, they started getting chunk plays running up the middle.

The swing passes to Corum (and Edwards) should be a staple going forward. McNamara has a lovely touch on that pass, and if it has to be respected by the defense that should open up downfield passing game.

Overall that was extremely efficient offense for a first game. You can't put too much emphasis on a QB who who makes quick, correct decisions and is accurate.

I'm not a UW fan (though I did get a Masters there), but I live in Seattle and love college football, so I tend to know more about them than the average non-fan.

UW's living a bit on reputation (one could, of course, say the same thing for UM).  Their recruiting is pedestrian, they won't field nearly as much raw talent as Michigan.  The jury on the coaching staff is still very much out.  Their results on the field have been middle-of-the-pack for the PAC-12, which... is not so great.

If UW does win, I believe it will be because of their returning experience.  The players they return aren't better than UM's, but second game of the year, you can imagine a scenario where the extra experience allows them to spend some time on practicing gimmicks, or where they may have more formations prepared, or whatever.

I'd say UW is in the same ballpark (quality wise, not in terms of style or strengths and weaknesses) as Iowa or Minnesota (in a good year) or maybe Wisconsin.  It's not like one wouldn't worry about those games, but they're also not one that you would normally go into full of fear and doubt (last year's debacle notwithstanding).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 47 is more points than we scored on any game last year? That's something at least. Looks like we've got the capability to have some explosive running, too.

You’re wrong. 49 against Minnesota, 48 (albeit through 3 OTs) against Rutgers. There’s also the fact that we played only Big Ten teams last year so scoring was naturally harder than it is when you’re playing a middle of the pack MAC team.

Not that they didn’t look good today. But yeah. Essentially did what you’re supposed to do against an overmatched MAC opponent and played fairly conservatively to do it. Which is fine, but hard to glean much.

That game was everything you want to see vs an overmatched MAC team.  QB's look promising, no egregiously wrong reads or wildly off kilter passes (and 1 utterly insane crossbody dart across the field).

RB's look STACKED.  OL at first glance seemed pretty solid given that they were playing without the best piece (Zinter) and had to reshuffle a bit.  Obviously we'll see how they match up against a more competitive team next week, but my expectations thus far are easily met and exceeded.

Lots of good things today. The designed runs for Henning and Wilson were wow, JJ's arm, RBs breaking tackles and showing great vision, Bell looking like the best player on either side for a quarter (welp).

One thing I didn't see while McNamara was in the game was any intermediate passing game at all. Looks like they opened it up for JJ, but McNamara looked shackled by the playcalling, like they have a "game manager" playbook for him and a "playmaker" book for JJ. Which, ok, that doesn't sound far off, but against a better opponent, Mac needs to feel comfortable hitting digs, posts, corners, etc, not just swing passes with the occasional fade. Hope they open it up a little for him next week.

The offense met my lofty expectations for this game. WMU defense is not the greatest. Blake Corum looked great. Cade had a good game. JJ made that one great pass. Ronnie Bell had his best ever game and took it to a new level so I hope and pray Ronnie's injury is not severe. The OL was good and improved.

I gave them a B+ because of the level of competition but they were exciting to watch. Very good improvement from last season. No turnovers...a big plus.
