His response, angry but calm, puts things in perspective. At first I thought Herbstreit was simply chirping. But he disputed the honor and honesty of people he only knows at a distance. As Manuel put it, that makes Herbstreit a fool.

I've always thought that Herbstreit is one of the best in the business. I still think he is, but to me this serves as evidence of how atrocious journalism and media have become in the modern era. Everything is about shocking people and "click" driven. Saying horrible things about people without having any conscience because you need to make money rather than offer honest news or well thought opinions.

I'm sick of the BS.

And no, there's not a double-standard. What jo shmo thinks on a message board is leaps and bounds away from what an "analyst" on TV says, or what a coach says (LOOKING AT YOU, DABO).

Yes, I have *JOKINGLY* thought that the only way Michigan beats OSU is by covid, but now that it's close to being a reality the joke isn't funny anymore. Anyone who seriously thinks Michigan would duck out of a game because "they're scared" is, as Warde says, a fool.

I appreciate the response from Warde and it was 100% correct but why is it when you put a microphone in front of someone associated with the football team they almost always drop a program talking point, in this case the vaunted “winningest program of all time”. It can stop anytime - no one cares.

Seconded ... and actually a little more gracious of a reaction than I’m prepared to give. I mean, why respond at all? Herbstreit sounded off, looked stupid and apologized. Then to go to the tried and true, but meaningless, winningest program of all time quote? Program racked up wins while other schools were learning to play the game and is currently a steaming pile of poo so why go there? To me, he’s just another guy living in the past. “Those who stay (a long time) will be champions,” “The Team The Team The Team.” Enough already.

He responded because, at heart, Herbstreit wasn't just passing along gossip or simply revealing his usually veiled OSU favoritism.

He was claiming dishonesty. Lots of people get upset about all sorts of things, on the internet and otherwise, but to simply state—and then repeat—that the University is being dishonest is a vile insult.

And though the "winningest program" card IS usually played too much, here it seems to be perfectly appropriate. It's data, it's evidence, it's what Manuel said: in ALL those games, Michigan has never backed down.

Agree to disagree I guess. I don’t see “winningest program” as supporting the never back down argument, I see it as a common athletic dept knee jerk reaction that most on this board - at least in other threads and on other topics - are rightfully tired of. Let me put it this way. I see a lot in Warde’s statement and attitude that will inevitably lead to an extension for Harbaugh.

I totally agree.  Using the “winningest program” line just sounds laughable at this point.  This program hasn’t won shit since 2003.  Nobody else even cares about that shit.  Bo is gone now. He’s been dead for 14 years.  It’s time to move forward and build something else to celebrate.

You're both right? I love the fire from Warde. I love that he's speaking up against this bs idea of ducking opponents. But the "winningest program" thing needs a seat on the bench. We have lost 15 of 16 to our biggest rival, and three of the last five have been blowouts. We're not backing down from that rival, and absolutely will not, but they are kicking our ass.

I mean, he responded because someone asked him.  I guess he could do the canned "I won't dignify that statement with a response" line, but that's it.  His point was the Michigan has won a lot of football games and isn't going to try to duck an opponent; a totally reasonable statement to make.  I find all of the rah-rah stuff annoying in general, but here it made total sense to point out this school's history of showing up and competing.

I was there 90-93. Great memories. Also ancient history. Need some new memories and need someone to lead the program in a way to get there. Has been and will continue to be a tall task. It’s depressing and puts everyone on edge. Being accused of ducking them is beyond the pale and yet we are facing facts that we aren’t even playing the same sport as Ohio St.

Warde just wound up and gave Herbie a swift kick squarely in the nuts. I absolutely hate as a resident of Oakland county and somebody that loves sport radio chat that the only option during drive time is that idiot Valenti who was getting all kinds of glee today over Herbie's statement and saying he shouldn't have walked it back. Funny how the Jim Rome segment came on during Valenti's show and Rome said that while Harbaugh has a really bad program right now, one thing he does know is that Harbaugh is not afraid to play anybody. Totally throwing a wet blanket on Valenti's argument and making him look like the fool that he is.

We won't, that fire has been out since 2016.  Warde did what he did because Harbaugh won't.  Five years ago, Harbaugh would have been fined for his immediate and vociferous response.  Remember what he did to Butch Jones and Hugh Freeze simply because they said they'd show up for lunch during Michigan's spring training at IMG...

That version of Harbaugh has been missing since Dec 2016.

He owned Herbie - just like UM did during Kirk’s years at tosu.  Well done Warde! Herbie should be ashamed / and his half-hearted hiding behind COVID apology where he self-promotes how professional he is about the rivalry was pathetic, too.  Kirk is good at fake tears, fake apologies, and fake respect for Michigan. And he is great at losing to Michigan, as he still loses to Michigan off the field everyone once in a while too - which is hard to do recently.

Should have also said that fool never could beat Michigan as OSU’s QB.  Kirk Herbstreit never could measure up in The Game.  Warde could have twisted that knife even deeper into Herbie’s weak stomach.  He is a total loser in the match up vs. Michigan.

I don't think warde should have addressed it, it just amplifies the comments. Also kirk h apologized. He's good at his job normally, everyone who talks on tv endlessly is bound to make a gaffe every now and then. I cant get on board with this being a big deal
