Freshman got adjusted as well.  The Doyle one late last week was a head scratcher at 6'10 because I remember Beilein saying Doyle came in at 6'9 with "long arms" not too long ago.  Now it seems these are more realistic.  MAAR dropped some weight, Wilson added some.

  • Doyle: 6'9 245
  • MAAR: 6'4 175 (was 200)
  • DJ Wilson 220 (was 200)

Huh?  He is probably the most athletic one in this group, and certainly of the 3 big men he is considered so.  He is the one guy who will be playing above the rim.   Probably even including the guards he is going to be considered the most athletic guy and the hope he is going to actually alter shots a bit more as we have nearly zero of that inside.

I have him playing 13-15 minutes a night most nights in my view of his role for the team so I'd be content with those numbers. Udoh had 67 as a freshman (just under 2/game) and was probably one of the best shot blockers in UM history.    He also averaged 4 rebs a nite - in 20 minutes a game.

I'd look for Wilson to be maybe 3 rebounds a nite if he gets 15min-ish and I'll take your 0.7 from him.  I think without Mitch we had 0.7 blocks all of last year ;)

...you're missing out! This thread for you is like Kate Upton porn for everyone else.

I will not feel whole again until Wolverine Devotee posts in this thread.

Indeed.  It was to my shock that W.D. did not create 1 thread for every bball freshman uniform # so we could give each one the intricate analysis and breakdown they deserve.

On a related note - note how Caris and Irvin are just about the same height in the photo.  Can we please break down what shoes they were wearing, if it was Crocs, if Irvin being closer to the camera tricks our eyes, and most importantly the fact that Irvin is clearly 6'7 as well - and if Peppers was in the shot he'd be 6'1.  Fo sho.

Doyle are an inch taller than Morgan and 10 and 5 pounds lighter (respectively). That won't make up for experience but there is some size at least.

Donnel-Bieifeldt-Irvin-LeVert-Walton

Its going to be interesting to see who redshirts (besides Hatch) this upcoming season.  Everyone looks ready to play from a physical standpoint but I doubt there are enough minutes to accomadate that.

Based on crooting stars more than anything I'd go with Donnal-Chatman-Irvin-Caris-Walton as the starters.

Chatman gives you an inch over GR3 who was more of a 3 in reality but 4 for our team.  Irvin slides to Caris 2013 spot and Caris takes Nik's 2013 spot.

I think Doyle will play out of necessity so your 5 is basically Donnal/Doyle/Max.  Max seems  too slowfooted to be a 4 defensively most nites but probably for a few minutes could spot there.

It will be interesting to see if any of Wilson/MAAR/Dawkins redshirt.  You sort of brought MAAR in now because he is older and can step in immediately as a spot backup for Caris so I wouldn't think so for him.  Dawkins does the same role for Irvin and had a year of prep school as well so is older.  Then Wilson maybe 6 months ago you'd think would RS but now seems to be one who won't.  So along with Spike and Max that is 11 deep.

You really can be set up with 2 man rotations at every position except center with a 3 headed monster

  • 5 - Donnal 23 / Doyle 11 / Max 6
  • 4 - Chatman 25 / Wilson 15
  • 3 - Irvin 30 / Dawkins 10
  • 2 - Caris 35 / MAAR 5
  • 1 - Walton 28 / Spike 12

...but the lineup is spot on.

For this response to yours about Walton's minutes...I'd say that is correct, however, I don't think you're too far off with Spike at 12. I'd put him at 10 and Walton and 30, but I think Walton is going to get 5 minutes per game at SG with Spike also on the floor.

I'm going to say...

  • 5 - Donnal 25 / Doyle 10 / Max 5
  • 4 - Chatman 25 / Wilson 15
  • 3 - Irvin 30 / Dawkins 10
  • 2 - Caris 35 / Walton 5
  • 1 - Walton 30 / Spike 10

I still think either Dawkins OR MAAR redshirts...if MAAR gets the nod over Dawkins then give him Dawkins' 10mpg, but put him at SG and slide LeVert back to the 3 where he's played in the past.

  • 5 - Donnal 25 / Doyle 10 / Max 5
  • 4 - Chatman 25 / Wilson 15
  • 3 - Irvin 30 / LeVert 10
  • 2 - LeVert 25 / MAAR 10 / Walton 5
  • 1 - Walton 30 / Spike 10

I'm a message board poster...so I have to be right, right?

/s ...just an IMO prediction.

Not sure why they'd bring MAAR in if he is going to RS.  He will be 24 as a senior without a RS I believe as he turns 20 this season.  I guess we could be like BYU and have guys play in their mid 20s as seniors.

I agree on paper he seems like an obvious choice to redshirt as you could also swing Irvin down to 2 in theory as a backup for 5 minutes a night, but I wouldnt understand his recruitment then other than "if Caris gets hurt you get to play" because in future years I expect a lot of highly recruited SGs to take that time up.  We'll see... for some reason I think Beilein won't RS anyone.

As for Walton and Spike playing together I am not a big fan of it defensively so I dont expect to see much of it.  Usually Walton would play more, I'd have him at 31-32 but that would give Spike very little time and with the assumption MAAR gets 5 minutes a night and Caris 35 I lowered Walton Jr's.  Who knows though...

That we won't have 11 guys rotating through every game. 8, maybe 9 at the most. More than that would be a problem.

Walton will definitely play more than 28 minutes a game...probably more like 33-35 if he improves the way that Burke and Morris did. And Beilfeldt will never average 6 minutes a game.

IMO, this is his last year. Maybe he'll go play a 5th year somewhere else for grad school, but I think this is it. He'll have a senior day this year and I assume he'll graduate as well. Similar to McLimans. Speak of which, I didn't know he had to leave Miami's basketball team quit basketball to go home due to a family illness...hope things are going well for Blake.

That said, love me some Max B, I hope he has a great year this year. He and his calves will be leaned on more than ever with our lack of experience in the post. People forget, Max B gave us minutes in the TOURNAMENT last year.

Take a look at the roster. If we lose LeVert as well, Spike will be the only senior next year.

We're churing out serious talent when we don't have 3-4 guys to honor on senior day. At the same time we're not a one-and-done factory.

How big was GRIII when he arrived at Michigan? Is Chatman too small to play the 4 with Wilson this year?
