And unlike two of our captains, Bowman remains with the team.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
Agreed. By all means transfer if that's what's best for you. But don't bolt on the team before the season is over, especially when you won't have trouble finding a landing spot.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:09 PM ^
TBF, Bowman has to do this now while schools are picking up players now.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:18 PM ^
A player should transfer whenever is best for them, and for many, that means leaving as close to portal open as necessary. Many programs aren't going to sit around and wait to see if you'll head their way. For most guys, entering the portal early behooves them if they don't want to have limited options because programs will move on if you can't commit early.
December 15th, 2022 at 8:51 PM ^
Here is my suggestion. Implement at your own peril.
1. Create a transfer window period that runs from the day after the national championship game until March 15. All transfers during this nine week period only.
2. Have two periods where initial offer sheets can be signed. The first an early signing period from August 1 to August 15. The second a late signing period from February 1 until March 15.
December 15th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
That doesn't work because spring ball has started...academically, you're trying move all of these guys in the middle of a semester.
It's also terrible for roster management and recruiting.
Someone could be losing 15 guys in the middle of the spring and not have a chance to get all of the practices with the guys they bring in to replace them. Signing Day would be over, so you can't add freshman. NFL Draft a month away (not that it matters too much).
Most importantly, it's bad for the player...you're making them wait 4 months to transfer when they want to leave.
I'd bet some guys would just leave the program until they found their new team in March.
Even Jan. 1 - Jan 31. But that's still cutting it close academically and you'd definitely have bowl opt outs.
Just let then go after the conference championships have been played. Easier for everyone. But this thread is about HOW Bowman is going. He's in the portal, but he's still going to ride with his team in pursuit of a national championship. That's pretty cool if you ask me!
December 15th, 2022 at 10:17 PM ^
For most guys, entering the portal early behooves them
Totally agree. For someone like Bowman, an established QB, he can ‘hand-shake agree’ to moving to a new school and get some additional practice in before the bowl. Not likely to get injured, gets to enjoy a bowl game or two, and then head out to a waiting new team.
December 16th, 2022 at 9:15 AM ^
This exactly. Plus it's not like Bowman is a sure-thing NFL prospect, so he gets a chance to get a national championship ring which is a lifetime achievement for 99% of football players in the world. He can stay with Michigan, get a chance at a ring, and then make a decision on a FCS or non-P5 school that is probably already sending him emails that he'd have a chance at a starting job.
December 16th, 2022 at 12:39 AM ^
Sorry but sometimes you need to jump on an opening for a school that fits before they fill with other transfers or new freshman. If you don’t feel happy to praise them for their M achievements due to the way they left that’s ok, nothing need to be said, if you want to wish them luck on their new ventures, whatever. High roads people
December 15th, 2022 at 7:07 PM ^
Shhh… quiet. You don’t want them to start another cade appreciation thread or the daily pitchfork threads like they did with the boos.
December 15th, 2022 at 7:09 PM ^
Cade should still have a cyan and I was a big defender of his.
December 15th, 2022 at 7:12 PM ^
I'm not sure there's ever been a "controversy" better proven "right" than Cade getting the cyan treatment.
December 15th, 2022 at 8:09 PM ^
John U. Bacon was on with Sam Webb this morning. He revealed through sources on the team that Cade wouldn't speak to JJ back in the spring. So much for being a mature leader. JJ has handled the entire situation with class.
December 15th, 2022 at 8:58 PM ^
If that is true, and I have no reason to believe the contrary, then I was *completely* wrong about Cade. I believed he was a mature leader and I may very well be wrong. That behavior is not leadership; it is petty, selfish, and immature. Ugh.
December 15th, 2022 at 9:23 PM ^
I went back and watched:
again.
And now looking at it without my "cade-beat-osu-and-won-us-a-big-ten-championship" maize and blue colored glasses on, Cade doesn't come off as credible to me anymore (especially not owning his performances against Colorado State and time against Hawaii).
There's no fucking way a Michigan doctor (not saying doctors are perfect) missed a knee injury to the extent of what Cade claims.
I think the reality is Cade played through it out of fear of losing the starting job.
Then he lost the starting job anyway.
So Cade is now salty about losing it anyway perhaps thinking he should get cred for toughing it out in '21.
I necessarily aint rooting against Cade but certainly not rooting for him. I hope Iowa goes 0-12.
December 16th, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
Makes me wonder if the missed blocking assignments when Cade came in were just a coincident.
December 15th, 2022 at 9:56 PM ^
I think Cade is going through a phase to be honest. It's his growth now that he has the platform.
Last year he was confident...think about the "this team is different," it was always kind of throwing shade to past teams. The difference was, he was talking about his guys. I'm sure they loved it. We loved it because it was always after a win.
Then we won more, beat OSU, B1G Champs, went to the CFP and the entitlement came. Entitlement mixed with what he already was...is Baker Mayfield. Except he's not nearly as good as Baker.
But it gave him a platform and voice and he's one of those guys like Hunter Dickinson or Taylor Lewan, he's going podcast it up and talk shit, he is going to be "edgy," he's going to be look at me, at the same time... I'm sure he'll be at the children's hospital as well.
It's best that he's gone because it became about him.
With All, I don't think he wanted to go, I think that was his medical situation and then he got frustrated said one wrong thing and Michigan fans turned the SuperDouche on and just went after him and his family. Now they're just swining back and it's all bad.
All was like Harbaugh's son. He absolutely loved Michigan. Cade is going to be the rich kid/spoiled "bro"/look at me guy...it's a good thing he's not around to influence anyone in the program.
December 15th, 2022 at 10:21 PM ^
Imagine putting I’m sure he will be at the children’s hospital as something that’s negative. Get a grip on yourself.
December 15th, 2022 at 10:37 PM ^
His cade cult definitely fed into it. All of the appreciation threads and legend status stuff was out of control.
December 16th, 2022 at 11:59 AM ^
I disagree on the All situation. He just had to say that the Michigan doctors disagreed with his surgeon in Ft. Myers and Iowa agrees with his surgery, so he’s transferring there.
it’s not a coincidence that Harbaugh and Kirk are good friends and that’s where All and Cade went.
December 15th, 2022 at 8:33 PM ^
Stand up Dude!
December 16th, 2022 at 7:19 AM ^
I wouldnt blame the guy for leaving now. I'm sure he just wants to play, and thats great. I also dont think he'd look like an asshole on the way out like 2 other guys did.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:08 PM ^
You don't always get a chance at a natty...
December 15th, 2022 at 7:01 PM ^
The Circle K on the corner tells me otherwise
December 15th, 2022 at 10:27 PM ^
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
December 15th, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
Especially if you play for a college that’s located in Iowa City.
December 16th, 2022 at 12:06 AM ^
Chyyaahhh...as opposed to Norman, Oklahoma or Lincoln, Nebraska.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:08 PM ^
Hmmm... if someone is in the portal, the school can void their spot on the team at that moment.
So either Bowman worked it out with Harbaugh to stay on the roster but be in the portal or Bowman doesn't know the rules.
(or thirdly, the tweet is not accurate)
December 15th, 2022 at 6:14 PM ^
This happens all the time at small schools. They enter into the portal and still play in the bowl game. It’s not that big a deal.
December 15th, 2022 at 7:38 PM ^
Hold on! Are you telling me that information in a string of comments on the internet is not fully clear and totally accurate?!
Color me flabbergasted.
December 15th, 2022 at 8:09 PM ^
In a tight game unless we have a slew of injuries, no, he won't play. But if all of the stars align and the Wolverines are running away with the final game, I can see Harbaugh subbing in every QB, every RB, every player so they can say later they took the field.
December 16th, 2022 at 10:14 AM ^
But why would we do that? I guess it would free up a scholarship, but I would think the coaching staff would appreciate someone transferring without quitting on the team in its biggest moment.
December 16th, 2022 at 10:48 AM ^
I don't think scholarship limits beyond this year come into play yet, so if they know he is leaving, they can fill his spot this recruiting cycle, but it won't count against numbers until next year.
December 16th, 2022 at 11:14 AM ^
Exactly.
I wouldn't think Michigan would purposely spite Bowman as the poster you responded to may have implied.
But it's a business and JH needs to account for the players who actually want to be at Michigan -- not the one(s) with their foot out the door.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:10 PM ^
Let's be real though, he actually has a chance to play or be needed. Cade and All couldn't travel with the team anyway nor does it seem like they've been involved with the team in the meeting rooms.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:14 PM ^
All’s family members would certainly be welcomed with open arms with the family members of our tight end room.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:54 PM ^

December 15th, 2022 at 9:10 PM ^
+1 from me.
Someone without a sense of humor negged you.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:15 PM ^
Nice to have a possible 3rd option for hopefully 2 more games but he may get snagged before then. Likely won’t be till after when teams whiff on signing day.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:18 PM ^
Hey Cade and Erick, this is called leaving gracefully!
December 15th, 2022 at 6:30 PM ^
What could possibly be gained by not alienating one of the largest alumni groups in the world?
December 15th, 2022 at 6:28 PM ^
I was always high on Bowman and think he can start on a lot of teams, just not sure why he ever transfered to Michigan. Just never made any sense
December 15th, 2022 at 6:31 PM ^
Yeah, just can’t imagine why someone would want to have two B1G championships, two playoff appearances, and a Michigan degree…
December 15th, 2022 at 9:09 PM ^
You respond to that like I was trashing him. I was doing the opposite. He clearly thought he would be competing for the starting spot or else he would not be transfering. Not sure why you have to act like that was a negative statement
December 15th, 2022 at 6:38 PM ^
Almost forgot he was on the team
December 15th, 2022 at 6:41 PM ^
Michigan grad degree for free?
December 15th, 2022 at 6:46 PM ^
I may be remembering this incorrectly, but I thought Alan Bowman transferred to Michigan when the QB job was still open after the 2020 COVID season. At that point, Cade McNamara, who had little game experience from the 2020 COVID year, was competing for the job with incoming freshman JJ McCarthy after Joe Milton entered the transfer portal. I think it made sense at the time as Bowman was by far the more experienced QB.
December 15th, 2022 at 7:05 PM ^
My guess was always that, while he had a chance to compete and win the job, he suffered a pretty bad injury at TT (punctured lung if I recall) and may have looked at michigan as a place to basically have an internship as a player-coach. Looks like he wants to have one last ride before his eligibility runs out.
December 15th, 2022 at 8:36 PM ^
This! Dude is gonna be a heck of a coach some day. Maybe Michigan.
Calling it now, 2035.
December 15th, 2022 at 6:38 PM ^
Although Bowman has played very sparingly at Michigan, I always notice his positive, rah-rah attitude on the sidelines. Seems like he’s been a great dude to have on the team and in the QB room with a young starter.
