I will have a similar fear BUT I think this staff is EXCELLENT at IDing talent and all the buzz last year couldn't have been for nothing. Harbaugh and his staff raved about Onwenu and he saw the field as a freshman when he easily could've redshirted. I personally think he just didn't play well, but the hype was warranted. I'm just saying I'm not surprised that he hasn't locked up the job which seemed to be his the day Kalis left campus. It may just be an experience thing. But what I saw in April was that he wasn't the immovable object I expected. I thought he was just going to be impossible to move while in run blocking he was going to be pushing guys back 3 yards with relative ease. All said, I still think he starts alongside JBB in game 1 (as of today).

What seems apparent to me is the type of OL we have now vs hokes. Hokes seemed to be soft and weak minded, relatively speaking, and now the Kalis' and Bradens are gone (save for Cole) When the team has these Harbaugh OL with some experience then you'll see a real trasformation. I think it was the OL last year that held us back.

seems ideal for a four wide spread and shred attack. With few exception, he is very accurate on short and moderate lengths throws, and with the exception of the OSU game (where he was 60% at best), he rarely took risks into heavy traffic. With the wide receivers on our roster, we could be a nightmare for anything but elite secondaries.

Were we watching the same Speight last year? His short throws were awful. How many times did our receivers have to make shoestring catches or cut back? It was a lot by my memory. I agree with you on medium throws, and for longer passes he was above average. EDIT: I just read the TTB paragraph where it says basically the opposite of what I just typed. This is why I'm just a guy on a message board folks...

I thought one of Speight's biggest issues last year was his inability to anticipate and lead his receivers. He liked to throw it directly where they were at the moment they were open, restricting YAC. I'm sure the coaches really worked on that in the spring and will continue to do so in camp.

"I thought one of Speight's biggest issues last year was his inability to anticipate and lead his receivers."

This is false.

See UCF game, Illnois game, Maryland game, etc.

Even at Ohio State, he made some excellent anticipation throws.

The selective, fragmented memories people are using to justify some narratives is equal parts amusing and frustrating.

Your description is not how I remember it. I thought he was really good on hitches and crosses and "move the chain" type stuff, but really inaccurate deep. He would either overthrow open receivers or they would have to come back to the ball and turn a touchdown into merely a long gain.

I'm currently in the middle of watching every win from last year. You're not totally wrong. Even Griese just commented about how he struggles with the easy throws. It wasn't a comment about distance, just easy versus hard throws. That said, I'm now onto the Maryland game and my GAWD he is on target. I don't remember a single throw he missed all 1st half. If we get THIS Wilton Speight...we got a shot at that playoff.

Speight took a Rudock turn midway through the season. He was looking like an NFL QB until the Iowa game. No clue what happened there, even before the injury which happened late in the 4th. Just watched that game last night, and it was just an off night for him. So many near TD bombs to Darboh. I really think there had to be some weird juju tho. Don't ask me why I watched that last might, but there was way too many weird things going on that were completely out of the ordinary. Night games with that officiating crew usually mean bad things. If that crew is officiating the Penn St. game then it could be a long night.

I'm on the Maryland game too, though this is about my 3rd or 4th rewatch of last year since the end of the season. Speight was inaccurate all over the field last year. Short, long, intermediate and his decision making was highly questionable in too many cases. I feel like too many are emotional in their evaluation of him. I hope he improves, but where he was last year should not be good enough to be the starter if Michigan is going to compete on an elite level and make the CFP.

Good point. There is some emotion involved in assessing both Speight AND Peters because as fans, we want whomever is holding that position to excel, and hope may be clouding some rational judgements.

Wilton Speight is what he is.  He's got protypical size for a pro-style offense, when he has time to step up in the pocket and into his throws, he can make every throw despite a bit of an unorthodox delivery. But he has his limitations; he doesn't seem to have the high ceiling a lot of people HOPE Brandon Peters has, understandable because Speight came in an unheralded guy with a very limited list of offers, and he was recruited by the previous regime and OC who sucked, whereas "Harbaugh's guy" is a much more heralded and widely regarded recruit with a presumed higher ceiling.

When the play breaks down, Speight has shown an ability to move in and out of the pocket to extend the play, but when he throws without the benefit of time to step up and/or set his feet, he's wildly inaccurate. Some have compared him to Roethlisberger, but Roethlisberger consistently makes good throws even when under pressure or when his feet arent' set. Speight's yet to develop that, though I was glad to read about the emphasis on the quick passing game where presumably he'd be making more of the throws he's better at.

Speight was not good enough in his first year to lead a very experienced, talented team to a B1G championship or a playoff game. He had great games and poor games. He was good in some key games and moments and dreadful in some key games and moments. He had an injury when it counted. Then he was atrocious in the spring game. Upside potential? His size is outstanding. His arm is maybe average. His running is below average. His pocket usage is above average. His intelligence seems way above average. So it's really a matter of trend projection. I am not sold on his ability to carry an offense or deliver the big plays in big games when the rest of the O sputters - simply because he was below standard in his last 4 outings. Some people have hope because he had strong stretches early in the year and now he gets the year jump two bump. Regardless, I hope he is a gamer because projecting 2017 with Peters based on the spring game is super risky.

Deep outs are a combo of timing and arm strength. I'd be willing to bet that as his understanding of the offense continues to evolve -- which seems to be a safe assumption -- his timing will improve and make up for his relative lack of arm strength. Harbaugh & Pep are well aware of WS's weaknesses and I'm 100% positive they're drilling his skills to build on last season.

Lost me there at the end. I agree that he can't make every throw; that's a major tool, and one that he clearly misses. But Rudock did not have a superior arm.

Note that "superior arm" is not the same thing as "superior accuracy." Jay Cutler has a superior arm to Tom Brady. Guess which one is an all-timer?

Over the past several weeks, I've also watched many of the wins, but I've also DVRed ESPNU's replays of the three losses, where Speight was dreadful at far too many times against better competition.

In football, it's impossible to pin a loss on just one guy, but if you were to try to do that in the Iowa game, Speight would be your first target.

One of the compliments of Speight was that while he wasn't a tremendous play-maker who was going to win games all by himself, he was going to avoid the big mistake to lose the game. Then came the Ohio State loss.  Pick 6, pick to set up a touchdown, fumble on the goal line, etc.

In the first half against FSU, that offensive line was embarrasingly bad, and I put very little blame for those pathetic 30 minutes of football on Speight. But once the ship was righted a bit, he both made some great throws and showed signs of happy feet even when there wasn't pressure.

At least since spring practice when he put some notes together over there.

Sounds like things are falling into place except at CB, which is starting to become worrying.  They are still talking about players needing to step up rather than guys locked in.  I haven't lost confidence in Long / Hill but would be nice if the chatter started to confirm that.

Magnus posts here so much I wish they'd get together and start a new site combining the two. MGoBlog + TTB + UMBig11 is not something to F with if you what I mean. Redesign the site, keep the staff, just add those two and give them some kind of exclusive page/forum to share their content, get rid of Drupal and bandwidth errors...MGoPerfect.

Just last week he posted a short Fall Camp update.

In that update he also mentions having a deal with Rivals so he won't be able to post here during the season.

Some well known intel to kick it off. Speight will start fall camp as QB1. His spot to lose. RB order will be Evans, Higdon, Isaac. Honestly, Higdon is much closer to RB1 than expected. He may take it away altogether with a strong camp. 5 Fr. in the two deep. Two OL getting a huge opportunity and WR is pretty obvious. 4 plus WR sets are in the works.
I have an agreement with Rivals. So, this weekend is more than likely it until the end of the season.

We are on the outside looking into the playoffs until we have a QB who is a consistent real threat to thrown down the field. That Speight is still struggling with this and Peters isn't pushing him don't bode well for us to be playing on December 2, I'm afraid.
