Exactly...there is no "it was too liberal and I stopped watching...and I caused this, I won."

People don't watch ESPN anymore and you can see why...no one time to watch ESPN anymore and we now live in a world where we get our information instantly.

Why do you watch ESPN when you already know all of the headlines because you get them from your ESPN app or social media? If you want HAWT TAKES...you go to Twitter...you don't go watch ESPN anchors give them anymore. If you like Stephen A. - get online, there are a million of them if that's your thing.

So yes, they have bad spending...but more than anything, the times are just changing. People trying to take credit for it would be like a group of people taking credit for people no longer reading the newspaper. Sorry, but no one group did it. The culture did.

How many times do you hear people say "does anyone watch ESPN other than the live sports?" ALL THE DAMN TIME!

That's because live sports is really the only thing you can't get instantly/ahead of time from another source. No one is rushing home to watch SportsCenter, no one is DVR'ing it for the content...they already know what happened. The only reason people watch non-live sports is because they like the anchors over other people with HAWT TAKES.

ESPN recognized this and put SVP, and Mike and Jemele on SportsCenter for this very reason. They realize it had nothing to do with content. Now every SportsCenter they have his advertising the anchors...even the night shows. Because people only watch it because they agree with it or they want to argue with their TVs because they hate the person so much.

However, it was just too late. You can't change the cultural shift...you just have to adapt or think of the next best thing.

He's right, though. ESPN isn't going under because of liberal politics, that's pure fantasy.

It's simple math. People are cutting the cable/satelite cord, so revenue is down, and ESPN overpaid for broadcast rights for the NFL, MLB, and NBA. That is an expense that can't be reduced, unless these leagues agree to redo their deals. ESPN may be gone within 5 years.

Her farewell, as others have said, was 100% class and a great example of how to handle a situation like this.

I also believe she was a bright spot at ESPN - very talented - and she'll be able to take that talent elsewhere very soon so we can continue reading, I hope.

She is probably a great person and a good writer, but all i remember from her covering Michigan football was bad reporting.. When she covered wolverine nation or whatever it was she was consistently getting stats and figures wrong in her articles and would base an entire article around her wrong info.. that got old fast. It looked like lazy journalism to me

Also, it's funny seeing how well she responded to her firing compared to others *cough* Kanell *cough*. My guess is Danny has never written a thank you note in his life.

The POSBANG post below looks pretty awkward after this one.......hopefully everyone finds gainful employment soon.

Better to lose your job now, in a booming economy and expanding technology than the millions of 'regular people' who lost their jobs in 08-09. Bad business decisions in the past and apparently some bad decisions now in handling he mess they created for themselves. Don't like espn and don't watch it - hopefully some of the talent lands elsewhere

"Sports writers" ...? Are you really a hamburger or just stupid? Journalism in all mediums has been changing at warp speed for years now. SI is a pamphlet compared to what it once was and nobody needs to watch snarky cable TV content just to get the scores and breakdown of a game. ESPN has been sinking for years with overpaid rats jumping ship the whole time. So Disney won't pay you to cover the NFL draft anymore...? Tough. Find something useful to do ...in this booming economy of everywhere except at espn

bless that young lady.   that grace she showed is worthy of a posbang.

kannell (don't know who he is, couldn't identify his voice) may have been a jerk, but wouldn't it be better if we were all a little more like this particular U of M grad, as opposed to the outbreak of RCMB in the kannell negbang?

Difficult situation for her, and possibly the worst day of her professional life. But when one door closes, another door opens. She'll land on her feet and get somewhere better. ESPN is a dying star heading for a black hole. I actually had the pleasure of working with her, briefly, at the Daily. She wouldn't remember me (I didn't do enough around there to warrant being remembered), but she was truly a great editor. She's got a bright future ahead of her.

But I can place her with WGN in Chicago. They'll snap her up. Unfortunately it's "only" Chicago and local sports for the most part. If she really needs "a job" tell her and contact me if she's interested.

You're generally not allowed to talk about severance packages at the risk of losing your severance package.

if we're going to speculate - most if not all of those people were yearly contract employees, i'd guess that ESPN will pay them for the duration of the contract without requiring any further work.

I find the story of Chantel’s layoff, and of the layoffs of dozens of her colleagues, to be a sad one. Chantel herself is obviously a good journalist, classy, and talented. But the ESPN layoffs are a reminder of the pervasive instability and unfairness of our economic/social system. Disney from its beginning has been an anti-worker, anti-union outfit. Today, its stock price closed up, an increase of 11% just this year. As the Dude said, “This Aggression will not stand, man.” Eventually, workers in the internet age will learn to use the vast power of its technology to organize, unite and implement a more stable and equitable economy.

She seems like a prime candidate for BTN to scoop up.

Brian Bennett, the B1G reporter was also fired.

BTN should be on the horn...3 hours ago trying to get both.
