U of M Fraternities Damage 2 Northern Michigan Resorts $50,000.00 Damages.

Submitted by sierragold on

I was a little shocked and so disappointed when I read this article. This is is not something I would ever expect from the Univeristy of Michigan Student Fraternities and apparently more than one Fraternity was involved with $50,000.00 in damages.

http://www.9and10news.com/story/27896861/university-of-michigan-fraternities-vandalize-two-northern-michigan-resorts

This is something we criticize MSU, OSU for when vadalism occurs after a hugh bowl win. What happened here? U of M has more class than this!

Wow - What is going on here?

I have personally stayed at these resorts had a great time, partied and we have never left damages in our wake of the groups I was with.

This is bad!

Edit: I am more surprised at some of the posts on here thinking that this is not University of Michigan or Mgoblog related. I have seen too many posts of stupid student activities of MSU and OSU starting fires, etc. after winning a bowl game and these same people on here believe that $50K in damages caused by Fraternities of the U of M is not worthy of being on the board and that it does not have an affect on the U of M. Hopefully not a lasting affect, but it does when it is highlighted in the news that these students are from the University of Michigan that caused this kind of damage to the personal property of Resorts in Northern Michigan and if you think that this will not be in the news nationwide you are under estimating social media.

As I am currently a student at the Univerisity.  This is pretty much a non issue and is being resolved within the Office of Greek Life.  And from what I know it was mainly one single fraternity that caused the majority of the damage

it's naive to think that the upper U-M administration doesn't take this kind of activity seriously, since the attendant publicity will inevitably connect the frat with the university in the mind of the general public.

Yes, this topic is OT from a Michigan sports perspective and far from the biggest issue of the day, but if the damage had been caused by an MSU or OSU frat, the MGoBlogosphere would be brimming over with the usual smugly derogatory comments about Sparties and Buckeyes. It's disingenuous in the extreme to claim otherwise.

behavior--yeah--that has its place at mgoblog. As with so many of these posts, you are not required to comment if it doesn't interest you, or even if you think it less than apropos. Let the mods be the police and go about your business.

So, only mods police this place? There should be no community or self-regulation? If you disagree with the quality of the posts here, then just skip them and don't try to improve this place? Why do you comment about the comments that shouldn't be made? Maybe your comment/opinion shouldn't be made as well? If you disagree with comments to a post, why did you post here? The hypocrisy is almost astounding.

So there really is no excuse for their actions Greek or not. The appropriate punishment/fines should be applied if proven they were the ones guilty of the damage. Being young is not an excuse for lack of good behavior. Remember, these are Michigan students. They aren't stupid.

may seem somewhat inflated but I will tell you as someone very familiar with commercial property costs and labor it really wouldn't take much to cause that much damage.  Furniture for a large reception room plus 2 adjoining suites and possibly half a dozen rooms could easily approach 20 k.  Drywall damage, appliance damage (refrigerators, built-in dish washers, vanities, ceiling damage, water leaking through to other floors, union trade labor costs etc-also these repairs have to be comply with the commercial code and cannot be DIY or amateurishly done as if this is a 5 star hotel  you have to have 5 star repairs.  50k could be reached relatively quickly as you can see.  Something to think about for groups of college students going away for a fun bender weekend.

As someone who works with contractors regularly (in an industrial setting) if you do damage that requires multiple different contractors to come in, you will get to $50k easy. I don't doubt that number for a second

at Crystal Mountain a few years ago.  I own a ski cabin, I don't rent mine out, but the people about 7 doors from mine do and a Michigan frat rented it over a 3 day weekend and they trashed the house. As a Michigan guy, I was really embarrassed by the behavior.  It could have been a frat from any school, but these guys were from Michigan.  All the cars in front were BMWs, Audi's, big fancy SUVs.  So they came from family with $$$$.  I know, they are 18-22 year old kids, sorry, that's not a fucking excuse to destroy someones property and act like assholes.  My nephew went in the house during the party came out and said you could not believe what these guys had done to it.   In the end I heard it was about $8-10,000 in damage. Amazing how people can make such stupid choices.

With that said, my daughter and son are both at college and I have told them, you destroy someones property, you pay and sufer the consequences.

And maybe this is not blog worthy, but I am glad someone brought it up.

I grew up in Gaylord and used to work at Treetops Resort during High School. They recently had to file for bankruptcy, so paying for lawyer/court fees to recoup a fair amount of money is probably not reducing their stress. Also, I was a Greek who attended a couple Sammy parties just after they re-colonized. Their members got a little crazier each year I was in school

Whatever fratboy clown... you sound like someone from Penn State instead.  "Frats are philanthropic organizations", "JoePa didn't know". Same emotional rubbish being spewed...

how the hell do you connect joepa and this?  that just shows your warped anti-fraterntiy stereotyped prejudiced mind.

calling you out for saying the picture of that person is a douche and therefore a fraternity member and saying joepa is innocent don't belong in the same sentence much less frame of mind.

of course, since you think fraternity guys are there just to get girls drunk and take advantage of them along with your scantily clad avatar it is no surprise you have sexual issues at the top of your mind.  you sir, are clearly the biggest douche on this thread.

I connect the two behaviors by fratboy douches like you and pedophile enablers exhibiting the same faux outrage at someone who would dare to question your twisted sense of priorities, your lack of personal accountability, and your lack of responsibility.  Instead of owning the fact you're a fratboy douche, you chose to wag to dog and pick on my avatar instead.

says the man who by his avatar clearly objectifies woman.   and you think fraternity members are douchebags?  your avatar speaks for you. or , no that is just having fun.  i would think from your fraternity hating stance that such a misogynistic tendency would be objectionable.  ah, but you are grand and glorious and can decide who is a douche and who is not.

I stick by definition of you as a douche for your intolerance and stereotyping.

1. My avatar was put up out of spite regarding the recent silliness in the NSFW avatar post.

2. Do I think fratboys, like you, are douches? Hell yes! So do a lot more people than lil ol me!!! You're proving that to the forum right now. I posted a picture. In general. Not specifically @ double blue. You in turn got all indignant about intolerance and stereotyping. I guess in your case, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason!

3. Someone who went to a frat and got women drunk at parties (see, I can generalize too) to take advantage of them shouldn't be lecturing me about misogyny. Learn what the word really means. I don't hate women, I don't discriminate against women, I've never condoned violence against women (unlike your frat probably has -- see, the generalizing works both ways fratboy clown). I have a picture of a pretty woman as my avatar on a blog. That's it.

4. Intolerance? For posting picture? Which has clearly hit home with you! Ha! You need to get outside of the comfy confines of drinking games with your brahs, living in a big house, taking advantage of coeds, and see the world. There's a shit ton of intolerance in the real world. Real people suffer and struggle.

Some asshole fratboy like you who objects to a picture, which is clearly relevant to a lot of people, does not qualify as such!  Sorry, but take the faux indignation elsewhere!

oh my, how smart you think you are.

you did the generalizing not me.

you post a picture believing it represents what you believe a "frat boy" look likes.  You then go on to say that a person like that was a douche and is a douche.  that , all based on a picture.  so, yes you showed intolerance and stereotyping.

you continue both your confused rant (by the assertion that i started the generalizing when it was your original post that did so) and stereotyping- by the mere assertion that you hate all frat boys- and further claiming that , i, a person you never met , was "someone who went to a frat and get women drunk at parties to take advantage of them". talk about proving to the forum what a douche someone is you are doing a fine job painting yourself in that picture.

you then try and throw me under the bus because i made a comment about you regarding your avatar.  if you had any sensitivity to women's issues you would know why many would make that claim about your picture .   i, actually, think most of those people need to gain a little sense of humor, however, if you are going to post a picture and make assertions then you open yourself up for the same treatment, and a picture of woman with the underpart of her breast exposed and a bare belly certainly falls in the category that most, if not all, feminists would consider objectifying and insulting.

i am  the father of two daughters- one college grad and one college junior- and quite sensitive to women's issues.  i am fully aware of what misogny means.

when you grow up and can treat all people without pre-judging we can have an adult conversation.

Clearly, I'm a lot smarter than you! I posted a picture. There is ZERO text in my first post. You were the first to start with the personal attack... It's your January 21st, 2015 at 3:47 PM right under the picture. Again, if you think that picture is intolerance, you need to travel the world more. Or at least get some thicker skin. I feel sorry for your daughters having an assclown for a father. You are incapable of forming a complete sentence or sticking to facts, let alone having a grown up conversation.

no text????? are you a fucking idiot!!!!!!!   it says   douce in high school ---joins a frat

talk about not being able to make an argument.  you either fucking blind, don't know what you posted, or just like to lie.

god, i hope you are not actually one of our alums. to think we could have given a moron like you a diploma.

Fratboy douche, the text is in the picture.  The picture is not mine.  The picture was reposted from the web.   I typed ZERO text in the body of that post.

How is that so fucking hard for you to understand?  Are your daugthers as dumb as you are too?  I pray your family doesn't vote or reproduce anymore.

I was there last year when they were at Treetops.  My buddies and I were drinking $5 Hopslams at the bar when a bunch of bros showed up and started to act like douche-canoes.

Just doesn't seem like that much damage. Frankly, my first thought was, "sure, this is MSU type behavior, but I like to hear that the kids at UofM are letting loose a little bit more than when i was there."  Everything will be fine...after they pay. Christ, Boyne and it's affiliates, needed a bit of an upgrade anyways. New carpet never hurt business.

Rumor is the Treetops staying fraternity has been doing this for years and they bring money for said damages with them. Treetops is holding onto bad finanacial debt that's far too old. Money like this for "repairs" is a nice little infusion.
