Tyree Kinnel Burned Redshirt

"Tyree Kinnel played for Michigan yesterday on special teams. Third true freshman to play this season."

Trust the coaches and all that but seems weird given all the safety/corners we have and how well they're playing.

Prepare for the bitching in the 2019 threads that we "wasted" Kinnel in 2015!!!

To me this says a lot about Lyons and Dymonte Thomas.  If they were developing (Thomas) as hoped / developed (in Lyons case) you don't need to do this.  Love Kinnel's size and was hoping to see him around for 5 yrs.

p.s. with how little Cole played and getting hurt immediately I hope they can medical him to get a rs.

I remembered noticing Thomas too, so I looked up the stats sheet:  Had one solo tackle and a pass break-up.  Sounds pretty good for not being on the field all the time.

As for Lyons, in a recent interview he was talking about being asked to change to a position he'd never played before, that there's a learning curve and he feels he's gradually making progress.   He and Thomas are the "OR" backups to Peppers.  Lyons also had one solo tackle this game, and Peppers had two.  Considering Peppers seemed to be always out there, I'd say Lyons and Thomas are doing pretty well for their limited time, if tackles were the only measurement of a DB's effectiveness.

Speaking of the stats sheet for the game, Ojemudia was third on the list, behind Morgan and Bolden.  His loss is going to be big for the defense.

Wilson and Lyons are gone after this year. Clark and Stribling will be (and possibly Lewis and Peppers if they leave early) gone after next year. We will need guys from the secondary to be game ready and we really haven't heard much hype from anyone else in the secondary other than Watson. If Washington wasn't so raw I would think that we would consider burning his redshirt too. We may have to seek out some secondary grad transfers in two years unless we have a third Glasgow miracle/guys like Reon Dawson pan out later in their careers.

Totally ambivalent to this due to having the best coaching staff in the universe.  I sleep like a baby at night when it comes to Michigan football.

He assisted the touchdown saving tackle on the kickoff after Michigan's 2nd TD, so I guess it's worth it.

People wring their hands over this stuff way too much, they're also the same people that complain about starters playing on special teams.

Wheatley, Jr. was gonna play before he got injured. I say we redshirt him and save him so we'll have another year with him.

I'm not one myself, but I am willing to bet most coaches don't think like we do re: redshirts.   The mentality is probably that if they're good enough to see the field, they play.   There's no guarantee that a redshirted guy even sticks around to become a RS senior

Baxters Bio at MGoBlue is worth a read.  He has been an assistant head coach at Fresno State and USC and has been coaching special teams for many years and has been very successful. At the UM coaches clinic this year he gave a lecture about his philosophy and implied that Harbaugh fully supported him.  He wants certain body types for different roles on his special teams. He points out as mentioned that the special teams play about 20% plays and that he therefore wants them to have 20% of the practice time devoted to this part of the game.  He is also known for helping palyers to be successful academically.  My guess is that if he tells Harbaugh he needs certain players for special teams he will get them.

often the redshirt thing is players choice.  Coaches often advice kids they should take a redshirt but there are times when the kid says he wants to do anything to play.

Take out the 66 yard pop and our running day was really poor against a bad Maryland day. I'm not usually one to say "yes but take out big play X, Y, and Z and the stats are different" because the good teams call and execute big plays. But, that's not exactly the tune up we wanted before playing NW, even without our best RB

Harbaugh took a shit last night, and that little piece of poop knew more football than this whole board combined. Not worried.

People get too worked up about redshirts getting burned. You have four years of eligibility, if you redshirt your whole freshman year and then play sparingly in your second (redshirt freshman) year on special teams, you're basically in the same boat (in your second year of eligibility) as if you played sparingly in your first year. I think the plan for most guys is to play part time on special teams in first year of eligibility (true or redshirt freshman year), play some offensive or defensive snaps and regularly on special teams in your second year of eligibility (true or redshirt sophomore year), compete for starting spot third year (true or redshirt junior year), starter fourth year (true or redshirt senior year). If you're on this track, it doesn't matter that much if you played sparingly as a true or redshirt freshman, because either way you're end goal is to build up to playing time as a second and third year player. Unless if you're undersized physically and would be more ready for sparing use on special teams as a redshirt freshman. It's natural to look at a true senior and say if we only had one more year of him starting, but that ignores the idea that the player probably would have the same developmental track and all you would have had was more plays on special teams as a RS in the first year of his eligibility. If a guy can compete for time as a true freshman, play him.

This is interesting and news worthy, but it's not a big deal.  Obviously we needed him if the coaches put him in.  With Stribling hurt maybe secondary depth is a concern. Maybe some other special teams guys (such as Cole) have nagging injuries. This is a guy expected to contribute next year so let's get him some gametime if he's ready and can contribute this year. This isnt' NCAA dynasty mode.
