tree nuts are falling on my head
Turns out i bought a house in mid-michigan with two rotting but venerable horse chestnut trees in the front yard. I was dismayed I might have erred in judgement when I found remnants of what I thought were buckeyes in the yard.
My neighbors assured me they were "hawkeye" trees and nuts which makes total sense. Both nuts are poisonous to humans, horses, and likely wild wolverines. I have noticed pedestrians and dog walkers seem to pick them up probably due to the fact that they can kill things when ingested in mass quantities.
It all left me feeling nostalgic for the old Big Ten when is was about skunk weasel rivalries, trees, and a few other oddities like wildcats, boilermakers and hoosiers.
Two questions the web did not answer are bugging me. Which nut is tougher to crack? And, should I like Iowa less than I have to date? This year I gotta root for the hawkeyes and Cade.
Here's a link to the phenology for the tree huggers among you.

The side by side pic of the trees in the article is misleading as horse chestnuts are generally the larger more majestic tree of the two growing up to 100 feet.

It's not OT season anymore, big dawg, but good luck with your trees.
Sometimes timber buyers will pay you to cut them down.

there are two different ways you might be paid to cut the trees down: someone wants the wood for furniture or someone wants a specimen tree to plant somewhere else. Definitely explore your options if you want to take those trees down [I live in California, so I probably don't have a contact for you]

Ok fam, this is like a whole new level of GoJ style post. I see you OP. Let me try to translate:
Two trees in Mid Michigan is the Linebackers. Colson and Barrett are going to be all Americans because they are poisonous when people or dogs are exposed to their nuts in large quantities…
wild wolverines are ex Michigan players ( Cade, All, Carpenter, etc…)
tougher nut to crack means OSU is secretly working on a plan to forfeit the game due to COVID to avoid another loss.
Also BU comin’
1368
Or something like that…,

Damn, now I don't know what to believe, thanks a lot, Mr. Punt!

OSU is secretly working on a plan to forfeit the game due to COVID
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Forfeit? FORFEIT?!?
Is that what teams do when they don't play a game because of Covid? They forfeit?
Are you serious?!? pfft...please.

We would have won in 2020, and you know it
August 30th, 2023 at 11:21 AM ^
True.
Dan Villari would have thrown for 300+ & 4 TDs and that particular Michigan defense was going to suddenly become the '85 Bears.
I'm so thankful that game was cancelled.

Big of you to admit it BuckeyeChuck

Not OT. No readers need the OP to explicitly connect the dots for them.

as trees go, besides being poisonous, they are ugly as sin. suggest the following:

Well, he DID get it to fall in the direction he wanted, not always a certainty unless you know what you're doing.

Kidding aside, felling trees is no picnic sometimes, depending on where you are. I have gone over that process of chainsaw safety with my boys many times. Have had them walk with me through the set up on the tree, safety plans, exit routes, and all the other assorted planning that needs to be done in order to make sure you and your saw get out of the woods safely.
August 30th, 2023 at 8:26 AM ^
Breaking about every rule in the book. No safety equipment, holding the saw way above his head, apparently no notch in the tree (which is why it comes back to him - the fell path is obstructed by its mass), and cutting this close to a house you would definitely want either a cherry picker or at least use some lines and wedges to guide it more precisely. Yikes.

I guess I just always assume the people in this type of Gifs survive (would think it would not make it as a gif otherwise), but this one makes me wonder. Hope guy is doing ok now, but that is a violent fall.
Also, dude hire someone that knows what they are doing. Trees can and will kill you if you don't know what's up.

The guys that do this for a living have balls of steal. I get a little nervous when I need to cut down a dead ash tree in my yard. One slip up and it could be a major injury or death.
August 30th, 2023 at 9:15 AM ^
A little bragging: during my forest fire fighting days, I beat our our chain saw guy in a tree felling contest.
(He'd have beaten me 49 times out of 50 but that one time, I won!)
EDIT: I skipped the crucial info, that I beat him using an axe.

I’d love to know the details. Ax head, weight, sharpen, DBH, type of trees, etc. That must’ve been a sight.

Why do you “gotta root” for Cade after he trashed the program on his way out? This after a year of appearing (just my opinion from the seats, could be misinterpreting) like he checked out on the team after the injury.
I don’t wish anything bad for Cade and I hope I’m wrong about his connection to the team after the injury but I also can’t find it in me to root for him proactively. Nor would I be unhappy if he doesn’t play well enough at Iowa. Unless he’s playing OSU or MSU.

Eh. McNamara was undoubtedly frustrated that he lost his job to McCarthy and wound up in a situation where transferring was his only realistic path to significant playing time. Certainly it would have been better for him not to make negative public statements about M on his way out but that’s asking an awful lot of a young guy going through a pretty difficult situation. I don’t even remember what it was he said, but it doesn’t appear to have done any noticeable damage.
August 30th, 2023 at 10:45 AM ^
He accused M hospital of malpractice about 3 different ways. While Erick All’s complaints could maybe be seen, maybe in the best light, as a difference of medical opinion, Cade publicly accused his entire medical team of major misdiagnosis and mistreatment.

At least you know your chestnuts aren't edible. Try living with a bitternut hickory tree, the Tantalus of nut trees, dropping bushels of edible nuts. The problem, as the name suggests, is they are too bitter to consume.
But hey, at least you're not Cameron Brown eating deez nuts.

Took a trip to Ireland this past spring and during a horse and carriage ride in Kilkenny, our driver saw I was wearing an M jacket. At one point he looks me square in the eye and said “That tree right there is a Buckeye tree sir. As you already know, it’s a worthless nut.” He giggled and then whistled the theme from “ The Good, The Bad and the Ugly”.
