Top 150 College players, according to NFL.com: 6 UM guys on list

Submitted by StephenRKass on

NFL.com put out a list ranking the top 150 college players in the country. It is annoying because you have to click on 9 different tabs to go through the list. (Click bait). Hence, no link. But here are the Michigan guys on the list:

  • 13.  Jabrill Peppers
  • 41.  Jourdan Lewis
  • 50.  Jehu Chesson
  • 73.  Jake Butt
  • 86.  Chris Wormley
  • 139.  Maurice Hurst

I think there are several more Michigan players who could have been there. Glasgow and Darboh come to mind, and there are more than that. Still, all in all, this is the most guys from Michigan that highly ranked for a long time.

I wouldn't be surprised if NFL.com is also taking into account ST contributions. I think Chesson's value jumps when you look at his ST blocking.

Notre: this is an invitation for someone to post the bowling ball gif.

Second note: Thank you, StephenRKass for clicking so we don't have to.

Jehu had more touchdowns and is obviously more of a big play threat, but Darboh had more yards, more first downs, and more catches than Chesson did last year.

Personally, I think they are just about even in terms of overall talent and utility to the team - they just play different roles.

I think Chesson's breakoutend to the season and NFL upside are why he's given more credit nationally. Darboh may yet have the better season, but I think we more or less know what he is. More of a Hemingway/Avant type that still has a shot to play in the NFL a long time but will never be a Biletnikoff contender or high-end NFL receiver. Chesson may not accomplish those feats either, but his unique speed/height combo gives him a higher ceiling.

Can someone elaborate on this? Because I've seen this in multiple places.

Is his application (size/speed/skillset combination) just not amazing useful at the college level, but  somehow incredibly useful at the NFL level???

Does he have untapped potential?

Me no understanding

The beauty of it is, whether the right guys are on it or not, we all know that we have at least 3-4 if not more players who are as good or better than the Michigan players they included. Even if they are guys who do not have as much NFL potential, their college impact is elite.

Clearly Herbie doesn't pay attention to NFL.com because he said that Michigan doesn't have enough talent on the roster to compete at a high level this year.

Personally, I don't buy into the "Michigan is a year away" talk.  In fact, I think that Michigan will be more talented in 2016 than it 2017.  All bets are off once we hit 2018 and 2019 and Harbaugh's first two full recruiting classes start to hit their stride.

He misses on this one. Michigan is ready now with as much experienced and potential NFL talent on the roster. Typically a team losing as many players as we will could take a step back in 2017. I think his overall message is correct and that is Harbaugh loading up elite talent and when that gets traction (hopefully as early as next year) Watch out.

At this current point in time, I'd believe there are.

Peppers showed what he can do last year, but he was not a world-beater. That's not to say he couldn't be this year. If he plays up to his full potential, you're potentially looking at a top-10, maybe even a top-5 draft pick next spring.

My honest opinon: last year showed Peppers was an uber-talented athlete with decent-to-good production, but not what it should've be compared to his potential. I would've liked to see some turnovers generated, some punts taken to the house, etc. But if he takes what he did last year and builds on it, then watch out.

There's 60 some Power 5 schools and with the smattering of good players on lesser teams, this list on average is only the top 2-3 guys on each Power 5 team which means a) we have a silly amount of talent this year and b) I'm not too surprised guys like Darboh and Taco didn't make the list

is regarded by many as the best athlete on the team, maybe the best one since Woodson, but would you as a fan feel as satisfied about his career achievements at Michigan as you felt after Woodson left, no matter what transpires this season?   Woodson's third and final year as a Wolverine was completely satisfying ending both as a Heisman winner and in the larger context the leader of a remarkable defense in a championship season.

I still remember Charles manning the Michigan secondary with Ty Law as a freshman and making a pair of interceptions against the Buckeyes in 1995. He was already turning heads, but that was a breakout freshman finale for him. I don't feel like Jabrill has had a game where what he did made him a potential Heisman game-breaker, defensively or offensiverly. And really, not his fault. Because he's made great contributions on both sides of the ball. I just want to see some Denard moments from him. And I feel like we haven't seen enoough of them. I feel a little guilty in even expressing this opinion.

Because even though he has already shown the kind of ability we anxiously awaited his freshman year when almost instantly he was missing in action and then gone with an injury leading to a redshirt season.

Last year, of course, he was outstanding on both sides of the ball, and perhaps no better than his Alamo efforrt against the Buckeyes. But we then missed him in the bowl game.

Look this is a purely selfish point of view, and I only want the best for our guy, but I was actually hoping that no matter what happens next for this team, that Jabrill stays for one more year after this one. I mean how often do guys like Woodson and Jabrill come around, a guy who actually plays both sides of the ball at the highest level. I am sorry that I feel like this, because I only want the best for him and our team. I just wish we could count him on him for this season and next.

If he's smart, there's no way Jabril is back next year. They are just going to throw so much money at him.

Unless he has a season for the ages, its highly unlikely his legacy exceeds that of Woodson.

He doesn't have elite cover skills like Woodson did. That's a huge difference between them.

I understand your point but if he ends in NY for heisman finals and Michigan wins the title (or even makes the playoff), he would have a huge part in that and I would feel more than satisfied with his career achievements.  Such is the nature of a super-talented guy that was good enough to play as a freshman but was injured.  His sophomore year was basically his first year and was very solid (comparable to Woodson's freshman year IMO).  While I don't expect Peppers to have a heisman year like Woodson, I am expecting an All-B1G year and possibly All American.

Ryan Glasgow needs to be in that list.  7 out of the Top 150 ain't bad.  Amara Darboh, Taco Charlton and Mason Cole would/should make a Top 250, I would think.
