TomVH: Quick Danny O'Brien Update (Not related to Schutt)

Submitted by TomVH on

This is completely independent from all the Tommy Schutt news that's going around. Danny O'Brien sent me a text today asking that I help him dispel the rumors about him committing soon. He said he's been getting phone calls a lot lately and people asking if he's going to commit.

He wants to take his time and take his official visits. He asked if I could help stop the rumors and phone calls asking about it, so this is the best I can do.

He has his top six now and like he said in the Weekly Update, he will cut that down to three and take officials to those three schools.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but since it's a thread telling us to stop asking about O'Brien, I will ask about Armani Reeves. Any news on his decision to forgive our stupidness and put us back in his top three? Any news on if we will get an official?

Not that I don't enjoy this site and appreciate all the good work that Tom and others put into it, but I hope that some of the other folks on here (particularly those with U of M degrees) are busier and are doing some things that are really helping to change the world - maybe some surgeons who've saved a couple lives, some engineers working on cleaner energy sources, if not, my pride in my Michigan degree will be greatly diminished

Didn't suggest I was better than anyone. Just said if checking on a bunch of recruits made someone the busiest of any of us on this site, I'm not real impressed with what everyone is doing with their degree

But fan stalking is over the top, and not a good thing. Anyone who isn't a friend, and even friends and classmates, for that matter, have no business harrassing O'Brien (or any other recruit.)

No offense to Tom, but it really worries me that people are trying to make a living on reporting recruiting of 16-18 year olds.

I know Tom does a lot more for the kids and actually helps many recruits get in contact with schools, but those that don't worry me.

The only way to ensure the future success of an athletic program is through recruiting. So that is where interest stems from. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with being interested in the recruiting aspect of college football.

But if he is taking his time, even IF Pipkins commits...why wouldn't we have Schutt come to campus?  It is one thing if he is committing, another just to visit.

but I think it is us who have been differentiating between DT and NT. If I remember correctly (and I could be wrong here), I thought when that first hit the board it was that the coaches said they were only going to take one interior lineman (which is one of either a DT or NT). If they said one DT than you are correct and it could mean they are going to take one of each. I just seem to think the first time it was reported it was said the coaches wanted one interior guy. As I said though, I could be wrong.

Yeah I don't see how a visit hurts. You never know what can change in recruiting and having another option out there can't be bad. Also the more five stars visiting the better. Obviously the coaching staff knows a lot more than me though.

...the kid has said all along he wants to take visits. Shittu has said the same thing (not saying we land him).

I commend guys for going through the process with a plan and a final goal in mind.

O'Brien isn't letting scares about only 1 spot, or limited scholarship sway his initial plan. He said from the beginning he wanted to take a few visits and that's what it looks like he's going to do.

I hope we get the LAST visit of the three, IMO, if we get the first, he could come, fall in love, but since he made this plan to visit 3 schools, he could get swayed along the road to go elsewhere. If we're last, I don't see him breaking his word/form and committing before all of his visits are taken.

We'll land O'Brien, just on his terms...not ours.

...is that coaches see Pipkins and Schutt as very similar players; don't know if I agree, but the coaches are smarter than me.  If that is the case, and Pipkins is a silent commit, this all makes sense.

By the way, I by no means blame O'Brien for taking his time...if he was my kid, I would do the same.

According to Rivals the wires got crossed and no DT committed today (yet).  Just an FYI.  Time to start letting the air out of that balloon.

That's got to be annoying to have your phone blowing up all the time.  He can choose not to answer the phone though, or change his number if he is really that frustrated about it.  However, he's just a kid, and these folks should give him his space though.  If the kid wants to take his time I have no problem with that.  I wish more recruits would do that and really make sure that the school they pick is right for them.  You wouldn't see so much attrition if that were the case.

I'm sure the so-called professionals are bad enough, but when fans start, it has gone too far. To even have to consider changing a number is pitiful.
