Tom Crean recieves dreaded "Vote of Confidence"
I for one would not miss Hitler Hair in the slightest.
The rise and fortunes of Indiana (athletics) is with Indiana basketball. Everybody thinks the guy with the clipboard, the next guy, can be better. But starting over is overrated. You can't be willy-nilly about it.
- Fred Glass, Indiana Hoosiers AD
that people think he actually is Hitler. Greatest anbd most accurate depiction of a historical figure in a film ever and I don't think that is hyperbole. Ganz nailed thes mannerisms and vocal tone of a stressed possibly Parkinsons-addled Hitler perfectly.
I heard that he contracted syphillis in the 30s and that's why he was so fucked up.
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
I would miss him. He is not a good coach, despite being a great recruiter (for some reason). We are better off having him at IU, because you know their fans are clamoring for Brad Stevens. Hopefully Brad really likes the NBA.
Brad Stevens at Indiana would be frightening. Sleeping giant meeting exceptional coach. He would eventually have them atop the Big 10.
Brad Stevens in college period would be scary. But yeah, he'd have IU as a top 5 team in the country in no time.
Sounds like a rival fan review of Michigan football 6 months ago.
Ding ding. I hope Crean stays at Indiana for a very long time.
How 'bout that Tom Izzo "coaching tree..."
Sure does. And we got rid of our "Crean" (I really hate to use that analogy to compare Hoke because at least Hoke was a great guy who never verbally assaulted a rival assistant while Crean is a creep). Now we have one of the top 3 coaches in the country. Brad Stevens' success at Butler was unbelievable, but he is in the middle of a rebuild with the Celtics that is just starting to take off...I don't see him going anywhere.
Yeah, Morris incident aside, Hoke always did seem like a great guy who really loved Michigan. Having met Crean and having listened to him speak in person, I have to say, he's a tool. Wonder if he's going to name-drop the Harbaughs as much as he used to now that Jim's at another school in their conference.
Also, I agree 100% with your point about Stevens and the Celtics. They've done well setting up for a rebuild.
Is he really that great of a recruiter? It seems like a lot of in-state talent has slipped out of IU's hands lately.
He's a pretty damn good recruiter. If you can sign Blackmon (who had recommitted from IU before) after what they looked like last year, you've got some chops. He also got Cody Zeller who could've gone anywhere and whose brother played at UNC
I don't understand why Indiana doesn't just fire him and hire Fred hoidberg.
or Bennett from UVA.
please nooooo. Although I don't think he'd leave UVA for IU anyway. Tony just signed a big extension, has unbelievable facilities in a desirable location, and is in basketball's blue blood conference where he'll be king as soon as Boeheim, Roy and Coach K retire (and he's already drinking their milkshakes on the court). One might make the argument he could recruit better at IU, but he recruits very specifically for his system, which means generally avoiding the 5 star one and dones. Most in the UVA community think Wisconsin is the biggest threat to poach him. UVA would literally die if handsome Tony ever left.
"Hoiberg" was born and raised in Ames and is an ISU alum; so I'd imagine he would never leave for IU.
IIRC, Crean has a giant, Ferentz-esque buyout in his contract.
Even if Indiana wanted to fire him, they probably can't this year due to the buyout.
The Hoosiers could buy out the deal for $12 million until July 1 and then $7.5 million after. It would drop to $4 million in July 2016 and then down to $1 million for 2017-20.
I think it's pretty well-known that Hoiberg has his sights set on the NBA in the near future.
There is zero chance hoiberg leaves ISU
There will be an opening for the Bulls this offseason, I think Hoiberg will be offered there
...Zoidberg?
Be careful what you wish for. Indiana is a plum job and even with this relatively down season, they are in far better shape than they were when Crean arrived. Supposedly they'd like to target Brad Stevens if/when the job comes open. Seems doubtful, but then, we just pulled Harbaugh out of the NFL.
Keep him there. Beating Crean is always one of the most satisfying wins.
What if his wife decides to move closer to family if he gets fired??! Gasp!!
Is IU a tourney team this year?
Major props to Crean if they make it. That is one hell of a coaching job considering their tallest guy is like what 6'6" ???
They'll have to beat MSU this weekend to avoid getting bumped off the bubble. MSU should be safely in now with that win over Purdue, but I have zero clue what to expect out of this game.
and Troy Williams both taller than 6'6", but yeah they dont' throw a lot of trees on the court.
My wife and her family are all IU grads. None of them like Crean much, but will reluctantly admit he's done a pretty good job this year getting this group in the 20 win range. They're all pining for Stevens, though.
with all the 4 and 5 stars he has on the court.
Get the hell out of here.
That team is loaded. I want Tom Crean at IU only because he absolutely sucks as a coach - another guy who does less with more, and IU will always get more.
This is one of the greatest anf funniest things I've ever seen. Don't know if you saw this, but the bit about Crean's record at IU links to Brad Stevens' Wikipedia page.
P.S. Love the name/avi.
Yeah and they have two top guard recruits in Blackmon and yoggi. Making the tourney shouldn't be enough. If jb had those two guards we'd be in the elite 8.
Tom Crean is still making a living off the fact that he happened to snag Dwayne Wade at Marquette. That's when his Final Four run came. He took Marquette to the NCAA's a few years in a row a couple years after that but didn't really do anything. He never finished better than 4th in the Big East after Marquette joined (which was right after Wade left). I'm still not sure how he got one of the premier jobs in college basketball.
another 4 star in the backcourt.
But someone in this thread thinks it's a wow-worthy coaching job.
Of course, that poster is a total moron, so there's that.
As a Dayton alum, I'm nervous this is where Archie Miller ends up. The $12 million buyout that Crean has keeps me warm at night, though.
I believe it drops to $7.5 million in July.
Yes but it's doubtful Archie Miller's stock will be higher than it is this March after what he's accomplished this season.
That is a huge buyout, and July is way after the basketball coaching carousel has stopped. Barring something catastrophic, the earliest Indiana could probably fire Crean is probably after 2016-17 basketball season when the buyout will be at $4 million.
It's paid out over the life of the contract, so it's not really that big of an issue... Not like they'd have to write a check for that immediately and if he takes another job or does TV, that number goes down even more
If Archie Miller is anything like his brother, he'd be a beast on the recruiting trail at Indiana. He'd definitely give his mentors (Sean Miller and Thad Matta) a run for their money vis-a-vis recruiting.
Indiana basketball and Notre Dame football have both basically been shells of themselves for the last 20 years (outside of 2002 for Indiana and 2012 for Notre Dame). Here's to 20 more.
I'd gladly sacrifice Indiana bball and nd football being good for msu and Ohio to suck at everything for multiple decades.
I'll have to disagree here. Personally, having grown up in Indiana, I hate ND football and IU basketball way more.
And there are many people in the state of Indiana who cheer for both teams.
That's what they created this reversable jacket for!
I've lived in Indiana since I was 5. I live between Fort Wayne & South Bend. Most fans are ND football & IU basketball .. but also drift to ND basketball when they play well. I can't fathom having 2 "favorite" teams.
