I hate that the media took this away from him by announcing it over the weekend. The media will just not let anyone live their lives on their own terms. I can't imagine being a person that has to take something away from someone just so I can be the FIRST to break the story. What a lowly and lame existence.

Strongly agree here. At some point, the news media decided that being FIRST was very important. BREAKING THE NEWS is somehow key. What they failed to discern is the true breaking of a story (watergate) vs. reporting something first that we all are absolutely going to learn about anyway shortly (TB's retirement). Doing the latter is just dumb and leads to all sorts of stupid speculation.

Congratulations to Tom Fucking Brady.

What a career he had. There won't be any debate about who is the GOAT for a long time

I hope whatever he does in retirement brings him loads of happiness.

Maybe he can coach the Vikings?

here is some of what he said.  very well said, sad as it is:

"This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention. I've done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions. And I am so proud of what we have achieved. My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it's best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes."

22 years playing.  10 super bowls.  7 championships.  5 super bowl MVP's. 3 NFL MVP awards. most wins.  most passing TD's.  most passing yards.  15 pro bowls, and on and on.

GOAT forever.

It's happening.  Congratulations again to the Goat Tom Brady on his retirement, unrivaled career, and for always keeping it classy on and off the field.

"He is the greatest of all time."

Perfect in its directness and simplicity, this is the final sentence of the linked article I added to the OP.

odd he didn't mention the patriots at all in his long statement. raved about everything tampa bay and bucs and even a shoutout to UM, but left out new england completely. must be some serious bad blood there

Happy for Tom. Sucks another qb from “the past” isn’t playing anymore. I don’t know how older people are such avid fans of the nfl. My heart seems to be in a different generation of players from when I was a kid (grade school into high school). College football is completely different. The players come and go continuously every few years and I enjoy every year the same.

To me this feels just like when MJ retired from the NBA.  I think the league is much less without him.  I know other stars will come around but TB was one of the main reasons I watched the NFL.  I was hoping for at least one more year but he deserves this.

It is a sad day for me, but a great and smart decision for him.

This.

Today just feels like one more link to a glorious era has been unchained. Brady, Manning, Brees, Rothlisberger, and Rodgers all defined the game for really the last twenty years. Rodgers is obviously still around, but who knows for how much longer. He's definitely on the back end of his career.

Obviously you've got great players rising to take their place in Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Jackson, etc. It's a new era of QB play, but the league just feels like a lesser place without guys like Tom Brady in it. Maybe its because they're all who I grew up with watching. I'm sure my son will look at Mahomes and Co. the same way I looked at Brady and Co., but like you said, just a sad day for those of us who grew up watching this guy defy every odd and expectation.

Very happy for Brady, of course, but the game just isn't the same without him in it. Its like the game has lost something. It will still go on, but it just won't be the same. The sport may never see another one like Brady again.

Kind of wild that many of us lived to see the prime of the greatest QB who will ever play the game. There will almost certainly never be another who even approaches his level

Nice little parting gift he provided on a recent podcast he did regarding his thoughts on Joe Burrow:

"Joe's obviously a great player. I think one of the greatest decisions he ever made was leaving Ohio State. You got out of that godforsaken place and went to LSU. As a Michigan man, I could tell how smart he was when he did that. One of the best you ever made, Joe."

Can't tell me that Michigan doesn't still mean something to this guy.

So Tom Brady plays for twenty years in Boston, leading his Patriot teammates to 9 Super Bowl appearances and 6 victories, becomes a hero to the entire New England area, with countless adults & children buying his #12 Patriots jersey, people naming their sons after him, and his official retirement announcement makes zero mention of Bill Belichick, the Patriot organization, his Patriot teammates, or the Boston fans who paid good money to see him play.

Very classy.
