Thursday Night Sports Etc open thread

Hey there! I thought I'd set up a thread for tonight's festivities. Right now, I've got West Virginia at Huston on for background noise while I work on dinner (rigatoni, with fennel, zucchini, and shrimp in a blistered cherry tomato-lemon-cream sauce). Kansas City vs Denver kicks off in a few minutes, the Red Wings are in progress vs the New Jersey Devils, and Atlanta vs the Phillies starts in a minute or two. What's everyone up to?

Ha! Thanks, I like it. Yeah, cooking is probably my main hobby. For a few reasons- my dad has always been a passionate hobby chef, so I think I inherited that from him. Also, I'm not as busy as my wife (who gigs at least as much as I do, but has easily twice as many private students- violin, viola, plus beginning cello and piano) so I'm often home first, and have more time to cook. Finally, it doesn't have anything to do with trombone playing, so it's nice to be able to do something completely unrelated.

What an upside-down baseball postseason so far this fall.  Already sidelined: Tampa Rays (99 wins regular season), the Dodgers (100 wins), and the Orioles (101 wins)

If the Phillies advance tonight, this will mean all 4 remaining teams finished the regular season with 90 wins or less, with 3 of 4 being wildcard teams.

This scenario is exactly why I have always been in favor of the divisional series being a best-of-7 rather than best-of-5.

MLB's current TV contracts run through 2028.  I think we're stuck with best-of-5s through then.

In the meantime, I'd like to see MLB try a 2-1-2 (or even a 5-0) format for the Divisional Series.  More home games for the team with more wins.  2-1-2 also means the majority of any elimination games are hosted by the team with more wins (it's opposite now).

Houston (yes, I spelled it wrong in the OP) just had a punt return touchdown negated by a holding call. That's been just about the most interesting thing that's happened there so far.

Houston just got absolutely screwed on a fumble that would have been returned for a TD had the whistle not blown. Refs are in the bag for WV.

Just got home from watching FSU's number-1 ranked women's soccer team scorch number-11 Notre Dame 4-1 before a packed and screaming crowd here in Tallahassee. Lot of talent on display, including four members of the US women's Olympic and WC teams, members of the Jamacia, Sweden, Portugal, and Nigerian teams, and really one of the prettiest thumpings I have ever witnessed in any sport. Sat next to a number of the ND parents, and enjoyed wishing them all well after the game.

Hit new PRs on leg press on my ACL rehab journey. 260 double leg, 120 single(repaired) leg, 170 push with 2 legs, controlled lower with bad leg. Riding high!

Random thoughts: the Houston offense looks pretty interesting, doing well against a four and one West Virginia team.

The lions are three point favorites, on the road, at a three and one Tampa Bay team. These are heady days for football fans in the state of Michigan.

would be great if the Red Wings had a solid year, but like many here have said, I think we’re a year away.

Wild baseball playoffs so far. Orioles and Dodgers swept by wildcard teams. The mighty Braves on the brink of losing. Would love to see more run support in these games. Spencer Strider is probably my favorite pitcher -- too bad they couldn't give him some runs behind the effort.
