A VERY underrated mid-week matchup in Cincinnati @ Memphis. [ESPN]

Also in the NFL, Cousins leads Washington against the New York Giants. [CBS]

and the worst part is #12 looking down at Kiel and then celebrating after it was clear he was injured.

Look like he got hit on the side of the head/helmet by #12 (Lanier?), and then his head hit the turf.

Here's the NCAA's definition of a "defenseless player":

  • a player in the act of or just after throwing a pass
  • a receiver attempting to catch a pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier
  • a kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return
  • a kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick
  • a player on the ground
  • a player obviously out of the play
  • a player who receives a blind-side block
  • a ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped
  • a quarterback any time after a change of possession

Kiel wasn't any of those things. He may have been defenseless in the common-sense usage of the term but he wasn't defenseless by rule, and that's what the officials have to go by.

College rules don't protect a QB (or anyone else) when he's giving himself up, not until he's actually on the ground.

I think what's really important to notice here is that the NCAA doesn't recognize the quarterback slide. In the NFL you're protected once it's clear you're going down feet-first, but not here.

Somebody upthread criticized Kiel's slide but it wouldn't have mattered--until you're on the ground you aren't protected so you might as well act like the ball carrier you are, if you don't have time to actually get to ground.
