Thoughts on Grant Newsome's injury

Submitted by MGolem on
I have been thinking about our o-line recruiting and it keeps bringing me back to Grant Newsome's status. I think we all agree our line was much better with him playing and I think we all hope and pray he can return as soon as possible. Some think he is done forever while others think he will be ready in the fall. The nature of his injury reminds me of Willis McGahee's in the title game against some team I don't recall. According to his wikipedia page he tore his ACL, PCL, and MCL. It is reasonable to think Newsome suffered a similar fate again just looking at the footage of the two injuries. Now McGahee missed an entire year after the injury but returned to have a successful, and pro bowl level, career. McGahee played running back while Newsome is a lineman so the knee's role is different but that alone gives me confidence that Newsome will return at some point. As an ACL tear sufferer myself I know a lot of the concern comes from the fear of re-injury and lack of confidence in the knee itself rather than the actual injury. That said his injury is obviously much worse than the one I suffered but structurally one would think UM doctors would have him all fixed up. Much has been made of his extended hospital stay but that could be due to an infection or any number of other issues other than the integrity of his knee. I realize this is wordy, speculative, and not about Najee Harris but I thought I would throw this out and see what others think.

No offense man, but why not just dig up the old threads and re-read those? Nobody here can provide any further info, or substantive discussion than what has already taken place.

Not sure where you're getting your info, but we barely even know the specifics of his injury, much less his prognosis for recovery. Any speculation is pure guesswork.

thought this post was about Najee Harris' opinion of Grant Newsome's injury.  I will just move along.

Najee won't be commenting on Newsome's injury.  He's just going to show up the first day of classes and heal Newsome with the laying on of hands.

I am on here religiously and I don't recall any specific thread about Newsome as it compares to other known knee injuries. I also know many people suffer these injuries (including many on this site) and considering the differing opinions we keep hearing I thought some positive guessing would be appreciated.

There are some classic tell-tale signs for certain injuries. Considering the extended hospital stay and unusual nature of this one, speculation about the specifics as well as the recovery path is impossible. Harbaugh keeps this kind of information under wraps, and as much as I (and everyone else here) would like to know more on his status, we probably won't for some time.

The reason for optimism is that Webb seems to think he may be back, and he hasn't been ruled out completely yet. Even so, I think it'd be better for his and Michigan's future to have him sit out 2017 and continue rehabbing his knee and strengthening his lower body back to equilibrium. He'd redshirt and have two years left IF he came back in good enough shape to play Big Ten football.

Best of luck to the kid, because the lengthy hospital stay made it sound like having a regular life might be at risk, much less playing football again.

I know your response was tongue-in-cheek, but even below the knee amputations do not stay in the hospital for a month.  The end of the residual limb is not ready to be fitted for a permanent prosthetic for at least 6-12 weeks due to postoperative swelling, so at most, you make sure the wound won't split, are molded a hard cover for mobilizing fluid ( and partly protection), and patient education.

As someone stated above, there are very few things that keep people hospitalized that long, and the type of injury (lateral contact to an athlete's knee) leads to guessing both vascular and/or neurologic involvement.  I heard a rumor of compartment syndrome, and recovering from both a fasciotomy with a skin graft on top would fit a one-month timeline.

Compartment syndrome occurs when excessive pressure builds up inside an enclosed muscle space in the body. Compartment syndrome usually results from bleeding or swelling after an injury. The dangerously high pressure in compartment syndrome impedes the flow of blood to and from the affected tissues. It can be an emergency, requiring surgery to prevent permanent injury.

If this was the case, that sounds like it got really scary for him for a minute. Glad he is doing better, if he plays again, it's just a testament to modern medicine and the strength of this young man.

But based on what UMBig11 was saying JBB is already penciled in at RT, at least for the spring. I think if Filiaga is what people say he is, and we get him, he could start. But maybe JBB would be better at RT than LT so maybe he still has a chance.

Here are some other thoughts.

- How often do I wash my eyelids? I gotta be honest: it's not that often. It's basically only when I get a sty. It's kinda gross, but I don't ever want to shove a soapy wash cloth in my eyes when I bathe.

- How do we know bigfoot didn't just leave the Pacific northwest? Dude could be chilling in Minnesota or the UP or something.

-If I ever am on the run from the law/ murderous criminals/ debt collectors/ Cthulu, I am going to Bozeman, Montana. Bozeman is a place, right? Anyway: you never hear anything about Montana. In fact, it could be principally populated by renegade criminals and witness protection people, and no one would know.

- I gotta be honest: I really expected there to be more times in my life when I caught fire, based on the whole "Stop, Drop, and Roll" thing.

The airport looks like a ski lodge and I saw maybe 10 people there.  So, yeah, no one is there or they are all survivialists hiding in their bunkers.

We went skiing at Big Sky and one of the locals asked us if we liked the place.  We said we did and we enjoyed that it wasn't crowded at all.  The guy told us "Good, now don't tell anybody."

does it not seem, in retrospect, like we had an inordinate amount of forest fire prevention education and Smokey the Bear all up in our grills (in the 80s and 90s)?  Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure how high the forest fire risk is in Michigan for the amount of time spent in school trying to get us not to start forest fires.  Either we really did spend too much time on it, or the message was so well received that it's about the only thing I remember from elementary school. Certainly a tip of the cap to whomever led that campaign in either case.

is board-worthy and anything about Newsome is bored-worthy? Yeah, I don't get it. Sam Webb's comments on Newsome weren't reported here and there has been tremendous concern expressed here about the status of the Oline next year. Getting Newsome back would be a big deal.

But let's  face it, Newsome's situation is situational at best even with staff assurance of his likely return.

I don't know personally what it's like to experience this injury and what it takes to get back from it, so I appreciate someone who's experienced it, to comment on what it would take regardless of whether he has any greater insight into Newsome's return than anyone else. Dish on his delivery all you want, but it's about the commentary, not the formatting that's relevant.

I felt the exact same way. If we are speculating about guys not even on the team why not revisit the particulars of someone who actually is? Getting Newsome back would be like landing a 5 star tackle prospect in this recruiting cycle. And for anyone who has watched a replay of the McGahee injury recently it looks similar. Felt it was worth pointing that out along with how things turned out for him.

for actual, official information. It will be a long time before anything is known for certain by anyone. Something definitely will come out about Harris fairly soon, however. If you're lying awake nights worrying about Newsome's injury, you need a hobby.
