There is now a 5th postseason basketball tournament

There's the NCAA Tournament, NIT, CBI, CIT (mid-majors only) and now there's the Vegas 16.

So now 47% of college basketball will be dancing.

One of Michigan's non-conference wins, NC State, is considering a Vegas 16 bid if they're offered. If the V16 deems Chris Collins' Northwestern brand acceptable, they'll likely play there since they can't even make the NIT despite having a 20-12 record.

Report is the V16 is consdering Florida State, Oakland, Arkansas, BYU and Albany.

The V16 will start on March 26th as opposed to right after the conference tournaments conclude like the other four do.

It's only a four day tournament. And it will be played at Mandalay Bay.

Seems much more viable than the CBI, which is a pay-to-play tournament and loses more money than it makes at the teams.

They're not in any of the projections and were on the NIT bubble headed into our game against them.

Plus, a ton of 1 seeds in the mid major conferences lost in their tourneys so that almost always automatically sends them to the NIT. That shrinks the NIT bubble.

Most other tournaments are money losers for participating teams. The benefits I think might be extra practices and game competition. Since, they can lose money, colleges might decline invites for that reason.

Such a joke. It's all about money, of course, and I don't blame the organizers of these tournaments for that (it is a business, after all), but at some point enough is enough. It should be just the normal tournament and then the NIT.

Who cares?  Teams don't have to do it.  Michigan declined a couple years ago.  If you have a young team or a young program and you want extra exposure, do it.  If you have a more veteran program that might be a little beat up, decline, get healty.

I feel basketball is much more different than football in that the extra end-of-season practices aren't nearly as valuable. Players can improve much more on their own in the gym; it's a more individual sport and smaller numbers-wise.

These teams don't care about the prestige of playing or winning a championship in this bullshit tournaments...it's just about playing more basketball and continuing to build with the guys who'll be returning.

They're basically organized scrimmages.

I don't think we (I mean you) can make fun of it because no one is taking it seriously. It is what it is, an opportunity to play.

The bullshit bowls are in it for the money. These tournaments are breaking even or they wouldn't exist, but it's not like people give a shit about the CBI, CIT or V16. It's simply about more basketball. Especially for coaches early in their careers or teams that are younger.

It's simply about more basketball. Especially for coaches early in their careers or teams that are younger. ********************** Bingo! This is what Grand Canyon U head coach Dan Majerle told me. It's all about the extra games and practice time and for seniors, just a game or two more before they're done. And at least in the case of GCU, they're not eligible yet for the NCAA so the CTIs of the world are their only option as a team that won almost 30 games.

a high school coach.  Nice.

164 teams in post season.  4 teams with RPI higher than that are ineligible for postseason.  But 4 teams with RPI lower than that are already in the tourney by winning their auto-bids.  Hampton at 20-10 is #164.  Nebraska has a losing record and is RPI 163. Wake Forest RPI 157 is 11-20.  Illinois and Tennessee are even higher with losing records. Wouldn't be surprised if some of those 4 get into one of these (if they agree to).  If a number of teams pass on doing any of the tourney's, even worse teams are going to be playing.

If either a conference championship or a winning record were the requirement, teams as low as RPI 193 or worse would be assured of playing in the postseason.

But...extra practice time!  And something for CBS Sports Network to broadcast!

If you're going to organize an irrelevant post-season hoops tourney, this is the way to do it.   Long weekend in Vegas.  Keeps all the teams and fanbases (if there are fanbases) in a centralized location, minimizes travel, and allows {insert Vegas extended act singer} to sing the national antherm at the championship game
