Support MGoBlog: buy stuff at Amazon
This may have been around for a while, but today was the first time i noticed it. At the top of the page is: Support MGoBlog: buy stuff at Amazon
I've clicked through, but I dont see how mgoblog gets anything. Can someone explain it to me? I do a lot of xmas shopping on amazon, so if i can have a portion of the proceeds go here that would be nice.

It comes down to pennies of profit from one sale. Dont beat yourself up over it. You would be better off making a $5 donation, because you probably would not be able to spend enough at Amazon to make a $5 payout to MgoBlog. The payouts are based on Pay per Click mostly instead of conversations to sales.

We get 7.5-8 percent of anything you buy from Amazon. It adds up.
October 23rd, 2015 at 2:56 PM ^
is that 7-8% of the profit or the total sale price?
i probably spend between 300-500 dollars on amazon every year so i will try to use this link. you guys provide great content
October 23rd, 2015 at 6:00 PM ^
Total sale. The rate goes up the more stuff gets bought, for some reason.

Who is this "Brian" person?!?!?! What the hell does he know?
I kid, of course. Don't kill me.
October 23rd, 2015 at 12:18 PM ^
In fact, several websites/blogs have this.
October 23rd, 2015 at 12:21 PM ^
Anyone can sign up to be an affiliate. If you're buying stuff on Amazon you can use the link to give MGOBLOG a small cut. I believe it only works per session. (The cookie expires after you leave the Amazon or after a certain period of time.)

don't check out until the next day? I'd hate to think MGoBlog didn't get their share because of my extended inner debate.
October 23rd, 2015 at 12:34 PM ^
I use this, too. Off the top of my head, I think you can earn 4% to 6.5% of sales, depending on how many referrals you get per month. So if you buy a $400 camera through the portal, then MGoBlog might make $16 to $24 or so.
October 23rd, 2015 at 1:08 PM ^
That's way more than I would have imagined. It's interesting that Amazon uses this model given how ubiquitous they are.
October 23rd, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
This subject came up a few months ago, and the then-perceived percentage of actual sales that the Blog received ranged from 4% down to .04%. I buy about $3K of mostly small stuff from Amazon per year (a lot of that is eBooks), and if the .04% figure is correct, it's not worth my effort to go through this website to net Brian $1.20 per year.
If the real return to the Blog is nearer 4% of actual purchases, I'd do it. What's the real story?
October 23rd, 2015 at 1:37 PM ^
I don't know how the .04% figure would be reached. Like I said, I earn a significantly higher percentage than that, although not the same volume since I have less traffic.
October 23rd, 2015 at 1:53 PM ^
There shouldn't be much effort to go through the MGoBlog referral link. I just bookmark it so whenever I go to Amazon it uses that link.
October 23rd, 2015 at 1:55 PM ^
4% on every purchase made through the link seems awfully high. I'd be surprised if a behemoth like Amazon was offering its partners that much.
October 23rd, 2015 at 5:47 PM ^
I mean, I'm a "partner" and I just said I make 4% or more...so...surprise!
October 24th, 2015 at 8:54 AM ^
See Brian's post, above... he says 7.5-8%.

I know in the past, Amazon used to send a report of what people bought and how much of a cut they received.
It would be funny if Brian did a Top 5 list of weirdest things people have bought.

Way back in the day (2003, maybe?), I got a report that someone had purchased a $7,000 television through my link. My cut was like 2.5%, so $175--not bad for literally doing nothing. They had a thing where they wouldn't pay you until the end of the quarter or something, and occasionally items were returned. The stupid TV was literally returned like the last day of the return window, so off it came. From $0 to an easy $175 to $0.
October 23rd, 2015 at 1:03 PM ^
I'm sorry for returning the TV too early. Next time I won't.

So someone keeps track of my Depends buying habits? Dammit!
October 23rd, 2015 at 12:40 PM ^
follows us around and between both Home Offices, and subsidiary streams established for the college brats too. The MGoWife has almost everything we need/buy coming in via packages at the front door.
Will let MGoBlog tap into some of that largesse.

I used to be an Amazon Affiliate with an old website business I had. I was pulling in 15k monthly uniques, 75k page views. From Amazon, I was clearing maybe $30-50/month, but I didn't push it very hard. I recall there being a lot of 1-2% CPAs, but some (higher-margin) product categories were higher.
I buy a shit ton of stuff on Amazon, and I've never seen this on MGoBlog. I'll have to start clicking it more often.
October 23rd, 2015 at 12:53 PM ^
I've been using it for a few years...just click that link and bookmark it. It comes out looking like this:
http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCod…

I keep forgetting about this feature and will try very hard to use that link going forward.
Actually, now that I think about it, I will just amend my bookmark "www.amazon.com" to whatever the link is above.

Well she doesn't have to come to MGoBlog. Just click the link at the top and amend the bookmark address to the one the link takes you to. I just did it earlier. She will never know the difference.

But seriously, buy through Amazon, and buy a lot.

Exactly. The government gets enough of my well-earned money.
October 23rd, 2015 at 3:42 PM ^
Many customers who buy shit in an hour would disagree with you. We don't want customers paying sales tax either, which is why we wait to go into certain places until the gov't forces the sales tax.

i blew out of my AMZN call spread this morning, at least most of it. took a lot of pain in august and september but stuck it out and got a bit lucky on a good fill this morning. next up, TWTR and AAPL on 10/27.
