Super Bowl - Who're You Picking + Update on Brady's Injury

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Maybe time to turn our attention away for at least a few minutes from the epic tire fire in EL. May justice be done on that at all levels for the many, many wrongs.   It is worth remembering that Super Bowl LII (that's 'Lie' for you non-Roman speakers....) is next Sunday.  Game is in Minneapolis and kick off is at 6:30.

Philly surprised everyone by continuing on a tear to end the season despite losing their starting QB.  They did have that season-ending derp vs. Dallas, 6-0 loss, but that was like playing in the Pro Bowl - no chance of winning anything and not worth it to chance an injury of any sort.  They have some talent and they haven't won it ever, so maybe this is their year.

As for the NE Brady's, they opened as 5 1/2 point favorites but the line is down to 4 1/2 points.  They may not have Gronkowski since he is in concussion protocol.  I saw that hit last week and I thought it was dirty.  The pros probably need to do what college does, suspend a guy for head-hunting, and suspend his pay, too. NE doesn't look like the death star they have historically been, they are beatable this year.

As for Brady's injury, it turns out that he was making provisions for winning it all again, and needing a place for his ring:

So the questions are, who do you have in the Super Bowl and why?

Have a great weekend,

I’m expecting the Patriots to win, since they aren’t playing the Giants. If you are familiar with Philadelphia sports in general, you know why the Eagles are a long shot at best.

Brady's hand injury should be fine. 2 more weeks to heal a cut it should be 100%. I think it definitely affected his throws against Jacksonville.

Gronk would not play if the game was tomorrow but he should be ready to go by Super Bowl Sunday as well.

Patriots chose to wear their white jerseys. They are 3-0 in Super Bowls where they wore white (including the most recent 2) and 12 of the last 13 winning SB teams have been in their whites. Fun fact: The Patriots have never scored a single point in the first quarter of any of their 7 Brady/Belichick SB appearances. Be nice to change that trend this time.

Patriots offense has the capability to exploit the Eagles secondary. Still waiting for "bad Foles" to show back up. If he does, pats by 17 or so. If good Foles is back, could come down to who has the ball last.

If Gronk is back, and I expect him to be, the Pats should win comfortably.  Not a blowout, but comfy nonetheless.  If he's still out, it all depends on Foles.  If he's NFC Champ Foles, Philly could win it.

But I don't think Foles can continue playing like a champ.  I mean, he's Nick Foles, after all...  The moment will catch him.  Brady will outplay him - with, or without, Gronk.  But with Gronk, Philly just won't keep up.

The traditional bet with my parents has me picking the Patriots - I don't know why they defer to me first, especially when New England being in the Super Bowl lately makes this a relatively easy pick.

Now, I bought squares in another pool, which means I am guaranteed to get a shitty square like "2-8" on at least one of them.

“Will Donovan McNabb’s vomiting incident from Super Bowl 39 be mentioned during the broadcast?

I bet No at -200

I like the blue Gatorade color poured on the winning coach at 4-1 odds .

I like the idea of docking pay while suspended. They should try that in the SEC as well.

Going with NE but less confident about it than my brain would suggest.

I once heard that an Eagles fan got yelled at by an off duty cop for swearing horrible swears in front of the cop's son. The fan then stuck his fingers down his throat and puked on the kid. In the words of Bill Burr, "fuck the liberty bell"

Philly fans have already done enough property damage this postseason. If they don't, this is the kind of DL that can make things hard on Brady with pressure coming up the middle and on the edge. That said, I just don't see him losing to Foles. Must be nice to draw Mariota-Bortles-Foles in a row!

As a greedy Pats fan, I'd like to see an actual Super Bowl that doesn't come down to the last drive (assuming Pats win). These past 7 Super Bowls have been rough for the heart.
