Super Bowl Sunday - Your Pick, Your Viewing Plans

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on February 13th, 2022 at 7:16 AM

Good Morning Mates,

It is Super Bowl Sunday and the lead up to the game has been quiet here in Michigan but we Lions fans do have a rooting interest.  For all the Stafford critics (EGJ, that's you...) he should rightly be considered to have answered them with great play and solid clutch performances in these playoffs.  Who knew that if you put a good team around him he might win some games?  I read a headline that a these were selling:

Official Detroit Rams Inspired T-shirt - 2020 Trending TeesFacing the Rams are the Cincinnati Bengals.  A 10-7 team during the regular season, they obviously heated up during the playoffs.  Lead by 2nd year LSU (sorry ohio, you can't claim him) QB Joe Burrow, they travel to LA to take on the Rams in the Rams' home stadium.

The line on the game started with the Rams favored by 3.5 last week, but right now I see the Rams favored by 4.  One of the story lines is that the Bengals may have a weak O-line, while the Rams have a dynamite D-line.  If that holds true Burrow, who has been sacked 12 times in the post season, will spend much of this afternoon either on his back or running for his life.  We'll see.

Game time as always is 6:30, and this year its on NBC.

So today's questions:

1.  Who are you picking, the Rams or the Bengals, and why?

2.  Will you do anything special for the game - a watch party, go out to a restaurant, etc.

Have a blessed Sunday,

XM

It’s weird watching a Super Bowl without Brady. I don’t have a rooting interest in this one as I’m not really a fan of either team. On paper the Rams should clearly win. I guess I’ll go for the underdog then. But they’re from Ohio. But then you have Kelly Stafford and the Stafford fanboys that will light up sports radio. But Ohio. It’s really a no-win situation for me.

I’m genuinely considering getting some work done instead of watching it. It’s easily the least excited I’ve ever been for a Super Bowl.

I'm the opposite over here. With little hope of ever seeing the Lions or Jets in a Super Bowl in my lifetime, Stafford's participation is the closest to an emotional investment I've ever had watching a Super Bowl. It's such a strange feeling actually caring about the outcome of the big game.

As for my pick, it'll be the Rams in a rout. Very similar to last year's game, with the AFC QB under constant duress.  Cooper Kupp will score three times and be named MVP. Not sure what's on the menu, but whatever it is, I'm sure I'll eat too much of it.

I want Stafford to win, although I really like watching Burrow play

I have to work tonight but not until 11 so hopefully I get to watch most of it.

No plans other than watching it and being pissed because as a Lions fan this is probably the closest I'll get to my team going to the super bowl.

Rooting slightly for Cincy but picking Rams because of home field and their DL. I might tune in and watch a little bit but I don’t really give a shit.

I'll take Cinncy and the -4.

I'm working until right before kickoff.

I'll probably go out to eat after that at our favorite Chinese place. One small TV in the bar, so no SB crowd.

Then I'll probably go home and watch the DVR of the end of the Phoenix Open.

If I'm still up after that, I may fast forward through the Super Bowl halftime commercials, which is usually the best part of the broadcast. But more likely I'll wait until Monday and google "Best Super Bowl Commercials."

No rooting interest in this game, other than Stafford.  You know, long time suffering Lions fan, and all...  And because Cincinnati is only ~50 miles from the biggest cesspool in the world, it has some associated stink.  Those two things pull me slightly in favor of LA.  But then, LA isn't a football town and I don't believe they deserve such success, so...

Piss on it.  Can both teams lose?

I plan to make some appetizers for dinner so we can snack most of the day, and during the game.  Wings, spinach-artichoke dip, cheese fries (requested by wife), etc.  No other plans...

Hosting a big Super Bowl party (around 30 guests) which will start around 4.  Bringing in a ton of good pizza (I hate when people invite others over and serve cheap, boring pizza), meatballs, potstickers and a lot of chips, dips and other finger food.  Loaded up on booze and got a 1/3 keg of Great Lakes "Lake Erie Monster" for the keggerator.  Asked all the guests to bring either an appetizer or desert to share.

Don't really care who wins although I KNOW the room will be 99% Bengals fans due to Burrows being from Athens & an OSU grad.  Just to piss them off tho I'm going to wear my Detroit Lions Stafford jersey (road white) I got years ago.  ?

Gonna bet the over I think at 48.5.  Should be a fun day.

At the end of the day I don’t really care. I guess the Rams, though. Most people don’t care to root for the “super teams” like the Rams put together where they clearly pushed all their chips to the table for a 2-3 year window, but I rooted for the Bucs last year when they did that with Brady and Co.

I guess I’d prefer the Rams so OSU fans don’t get to go sing from the rooftops about how none of this would’ve ever been possible if they didn’t see something in Burrow and put him on the path to success. Which lets be honest, if Burrow didn’t get the hell out of dodge with OSU he’d likely not be on an NFL roster right now. Burrow succeeded despite OSU, nowhere near because of them.

If the Bengals win though, I don’t care. Just want a good game.

Michigan fan in the heart of Buckeye country. Who Dey all the way. On paper, the Rams are better but maybe destiny prevails. I was 9 the last time the Bengals were in the Super Bowl. I am having home smoked pulled pork and making pizzas with Michigan made dough (because it is good: Tiseo brand). Currently doing my weekend turn at Children's hospital in Cincinnati so needed quick food and like cooking. Some kids at the hospital cheering for the Bengals: Who Dey: Patients and Families Show Support - YouTube. Warning, it may get dusty while watching.

Hate the state of Ohio, but want the bungles to win. I am not a Stafford fan and the lion fans rooting for the rams are kinda sad to me.He didn’t win one meaningful game in Detroit.  Lions fans should have been rooting for the Rams to lose every game this season so they could get a better draft pick.

Not really a big NFL fan anyways. Just going to make some buffalo chicken dip and watch the game with my wife and my daughter.

I'm not ashamed at all of rooting for Stafford and the Rams.

To begin with, as a kid I rooted for the Rams of Roman Gabriel, Deacon Jones, Jack Youngblood, Jack Snow, Merlin Olson, Irv Cross and former Lion Roger Brown.  Gabriel was my favorite NFL QB back then (the Lions back in the 60's were stuck with guys like Karl Sweetan and Milt Plum---UGH!) I loved the way he stood tall in the pocket, shedding tacklers and delivering sharp passes.

I see nothing wrong with rooting for Stafford today, he put in 12 years toiling for a thoroughly mismanaged franchise and he deserves a shot at a ring. It's hard to win meaningful games when you aren't surrounded with much talent (including on the defensive side of the ball) and are saddled with a piss-poor coaching staff.

We're hosting about 25 people, including about ten kids (mostly teens).

We've been doing Super Bowl parties with the same group of people for 10-15 years.

The one rule is that all food must be able to be consumed in one or two bites, so that guides the menu.  Everyone is bringing something...and we're ordering a big platter of Middle Eastern food.

I'm a little bit of a neat/clean freak, so, when we host the party, I'm famous for bringing out a vacuum at halftime to tidy up a bit.  (Before you make fun of me, I was cleaning up around the house during the second half and overtime of the 2013 Kansas game...and we all know how that ended up!)

Rooting for the Bengals in honor of one of my oldest friends, who is a passionate, life-long Bengals fan.  He was born and raised in Metro (not South) Detroit, so I'm not sure why he roots for the Bengals...but there you have it.

Rooting for the underdog Bengals and Burrow but it looks like the Rams are going to blow them out and this is over before halftime. Only way the Bengals win is if Stafford has an all-time choke game. I personally can't stand Stafford and especially his obnoxious attention-craving wife and I find the Detroit media worship of him the last couple of weeks very cringe. As if he played here for charity — the stat-padding loser made over $200 million dollars in Detroit. And I don't understand why he gets all the credit for the Rams when they were in a SB three years ago with Goff? In addition to Stafford, they added three (!) potential Hall of Famers in Ramsey, OBJ, Von Miller.

I agree with the cringe Stafford rooting. This isn’t like the Pats fans rooting for Brady in TB. This is a QB who if he’s as great as people say he is, should’ve won at least 1 playoff game in Detroit when he had Calvin, Burleson, & Tate on his playoff teams and at worst mediocre defenses (D ranked 3rd & 13th in 2011 & 2016 playoff years). Taking the Rams to a SB isn’t a mark of a great QB unless we now think Jared Goff is a great QB. I just don’t feel bad for Stafford the way I do for Calvin and Barry.

Going back for my second Super Bowl. My tickets are nose bleeds but just happy to be going. Leaving at 9am (PST) and returning probably around 12 hours later. Should be a fun day!

Rams all the way! I’ve been fan since a kid growing up in the San Fernando Valley, but I’m impressed with the Bengals and Joe Burrow. He’s definitely the future of the NFL and I just like the kid.

With that said, I hope Aaron Donald and Von Miller crush him.

I want the Bengals to win, but I think the Rams will win.

Anyone wearing a "Detroit Rams" shirt / sweater is as much of a loser as the Lions fan actively rooting for Stafford even though he wanted out of Detroit, doesn't play for this team anymore, and every win they had in the playoffs exponentially hurt the Lions draft pick.

You'd think any fan of Stafford would be rooting for Burrow since he's what Stafford was supposed to be.

With all that said I'm mostly excited for the food today haha

To tackle your questions, XM:

I'm both rooting for and picking the Rams. I just can't root for an Ohio team in anything (other than the Mudhens, who get an exemption because they're a Detroit Tigers farm club).  And picking the Rams because I think they have the defensive talent to bottle up Cinci RB Joe Mixon and pressure Burrow enough to disrupt the Bengal passing game.

Stafford has proven himself capable, if needed, to rally a team from behind, but I don't see it coming down to that situation. I see a Rams victory by 10-14 points.

Heading to my daughter and her hubby's home near Kalamazoo around 2 this afternoon, likely to be a relatively small party of a dozen or less but plenty of vittles and BEER. (NOT driving back home tonight).

Party responsibly, y'all!

Binging on Olympics all weekend myself, too. Though I'll be at my daughter's watching the StaffordBowl, I'm guessing we'll be tuned in to Olympic coverage on the USA network in the earlier part of the afternoon; USA has wall-to-wall Olympic coverage for the duration, including more live coverage than any other network on American TV.

Picking The Matthew Stafford’s since the Fighting Tom Brady’s are at home.  The wife and I are watching; a tradition that started when the Falcons were in the SB.

I get to watch my hometown team (Cincinnati) in the Super Bowl. I'm geeked beyond belief. I have NO idea how this game is gonna go, but I do know that the Bengals have already proved a LOT of doubters wrong. So how about one more time?

Never been a huge devotee, just sometimes tuning in late if the game was close, watching more closely if the Goat was in action. But my daughter wanted to make it a thing today, and I am marinating some drumsticks in chinese vinegar, brown sugar, chili powder, mustard, catsup, garlic and japanese salad dressing, and going to put them on the grill after baking for 45 minutes, have with sweet corn and coleslaw. Oh, and I'm going to root for Joe Burrow--I tend to root for the underdog, and think he's a fun emerging player.

I look forward to reading about what others are getting up to.

Bengals, 24-23. I don't trust McVay on this stage.

Watching at home with my father (he's 83) and number one son (a fellow UM fan).

Quietly rooting for the Rams only because I'm a Steelers fan and can't pull for an AFC North team, but if Cincinnati wins, what the heck. It won't ruin my night.
