Steve: Recruiting mailbag questions
Hey guys,
Feel free to fire away with some questions for this week's recruiting mailbag.
I'm going to answer a few questions in depth and then do a quick lightning round with a handful of questions that don't need a lot of elaboration.
Hope you've enjoyed them so far
Steve

LSU, Texas, ND, and USC commits for Michigan fans to keep an eye on.

Damn, took my question

....and I hope we take their good recruits!
September 26th, 2016 at 11:23 AM ^
That was probably almost everybody's question.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:10 PM ^
Mine too... particularly iwth LEs Miles gone.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:11 PM ^
Maybe a better one...."for the staff to keep their eyes on"...?
September 25th, 2016 at 10:23 PM ^
I don't think we can ask that in advance of victory. Or something like that...
September 25th, 2016 at 10:01 PM ^
Texas is probably not going to fire Strong. Strange that he is repeatedly mentioned with this group.
September 26th, 2016 at 11:35 AM ^
They're probably not going to fire him after his 3rd season, unless they crash and burn. That Cal loss hurts.
Looking at the schedule, I think 8 wins is realistic, which probably saves his job. He goes 6-6 or worse and I think he may be out. Don't know anything about their new AD, but he may see a 7 win record this year and say that's good enough to keep him around to see what happens in year 4. I know they're used to winning, but I think 4 years is fair.

good question. (can't upvote, on mobile)

Which of LSU's current commits or targets does Michigan have a chance with? (If any?)
September 25th, 2016 at 9:11 PM ^
Is there a target number of commits by a certain date to be on schedule, like Michigan wants 20 commits by Thanksgiving? Or is it too specific to the recruits and their timelines?

Who's visiting for the Wisconsin game?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:13 PM ^
Can you please say nice things that I will construe to believe Najee Harris is coming? Thanks so much.

As far as dogs go, he looks awfully trustworthy to me. Harris is coming to Michigan!
September 25th, 2016 at 9:14 PM ^
what kind of fallout do you expect from les miles getting canned?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:15 PM ^
Is Harbaugh's unique "style" of recruiting going to have negative consequences eventually? (by style, I mean, recruits coming and going so quickly, offering a lot, telling some to take a hike, or just not calling them for awhile, etc.)

What is the status on DT and CB recruiting? These two positions need some impact players who can help right away.
September 26th, 2016 at 11:40 AM ^
CB recruiting were fine with. We just landed 2 studs last year, and probably 2 more studs this year (Juste and Thomas). It is the position we are 'most loaded' at with young players IMO, so im not really sure why your worried about that position.
DT position, however, i am definitely genuinely worried about going forward.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:15 PM ^
If you had to be really reductive and simplistic and give numerical percentages to the odds of the top recruits we've discussed ad nauseum (DPJ, Collins, Wilson, etc) what would those HOT TAKE numbers be?

Did Notre Dame blow it with Oliver Martin this weekend?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:23 PM ^
They definitely blew.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:23 PM ^
I've actually been pondering that same question. Haven't heard he committed, so I assume that can only mean good things.

That's my funeral face.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:16 PM ^
What's the plan for TEs? I'm interested because they played all three freshman this year, plus Gentry and Wheatley so you basically have five in one class.

When should we expect the next commit?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:17 PM ^
Read that he isn't talking to any coaches during this time in the season.
Do you feel he is a legitimate option? Or will end up at Bama/elsewhere? Any reason to look into interest from Stephen Carr?
Thanks

How does Les Miles getting fired affect us from a recruiting angle?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:21 PM ^
Just in case nobody has asked this question yet...how does the firing of Les Miles affect recruiting? JJ
September 25th, 2016 at 9:21 PM ^
There have been hints by players (Devin Gardner and Denard included) of improper offers by programs during the recruiting process. Do you as a recruiting analyst hear about this cheating? How come the players don't disclose these cheaters after enrolling to a program?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:34 PM ^
I've often wondered the same thing
September 26th, 2016 at 2:08 AM ^
Probably no evidence trail to follow and it would become a "he said she said" situation. That being said I still think you'd hear more recruits speak up.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:22 PM ^
Do you ever think an early signing day would happen? What are the pros and cons of it?

Are there any realistic targets at safety after Kelly-Powell? Are the cornerback targets basically pipe dreams after St. Juste? Given the DB depth chart it seems like there would be plenty of opportunity to sell, but there seems to be a small pool.

great question. we all know OL, WR, LB, etc require a serious influx of talent, as does DT and DB, but they seem to have more options / targets at the former spots (in addition to current commits) with less real targets at DT and DB.
outside of the staffs top 1-2 targets at DT and DB, who might be options? now or down the road? seems like kelly-powell is the only real S name floating around, thomas is one of the only CBs left (as well as holmes from cali) and tufele seems to be the only elite DT with mutual interest.
any chance they get an official from a guy like grant delpit now miles is out (bc i think hes a future star)? and are they really hoping to pair irving-bay with hudson at DT? bc theyre nice developmental prospects with big frames but currently lack some of the skills of higher end prospects.
they have a few DT / DB commits but obviously need to add further talent - and whoever ends up signing at those spots will likely be relied on to play early and often. insight please? thanks

Ambry Thomas dogg.
MUST GET.
He is a mega stud.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:27 PM ^
DT recruiting.
Besides the big fella from Utah (who appears to be leaning towards OSU), who else are we after and is it not that big of a deal that we don't have a couple spots filled at the position this year?
DL/DT doesn't seem very deep next year.

I know Jeter committed to ND recently, but thought his interest in UM was picking back up. With NDs struggles, is he a realistic flip possibility?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:29 PM ^
About recruits and if so, does Michigan's coaches (besides Harbaugh) seem to have a different style of recruiting than other teams that sets Michigan up for landing top recruits on a consistent basis?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:30 PM ^
Does Michigan state's loss and perceived rebuilding year help us with Ambry Thomas?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:31 PM ^
How many Penn St. commits should we expect to poach this class?
More seriously, are there actually any Penn St. commits that are first tier options? I've actually heard a few mentioned as potential targets, but would any be takes right now?
September 25th, 2016 at 11:19 PM ^
glad to have SL answer but i think they have/had some 5 star DE or OLB type... correct me if im wrong.
September 26th, 2016 at 9:28 AM ^
5-star Micah Parsons, but he's an '18 recruit. Steve has referred to his commitment as "butter-soft". Not sure how much he's interested in Michigan though.
From the 2017 class, no one really stands out. Brelin Faison-Walden has been mentioned.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:36 PM ^
Uhhhhhhhhhh Which LSU commits should we expect Harbaugh to now go after? Has that been asked yet?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:34 PM ^
Has how well Jabrill Pepers has been playing at his new defensive position encouraged any high level recruits to take a more serious look at Michigan, someone who could effectively play that roll when Peppers is taken in the first round of the draft.

what impact does the firing of Leslie Miles mean for UK recruiting?
