Steve: Recruiting mailbag questions

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

Hey guys,

Feel free to fire away with some questions for this week's recruiting mailbag.

I'm going to answer a few questions in depth and then do a quick lightning round with a handful of questions that don't need a lot of elaboration.

Hope you've enjoyed them so far

They're probably not going to fire him after his 3rd season, unless they crash and burn. That Cal loss hurts.

Looking at the schedule, I think 8 wins is realistic, which probably saves his job. He goes 6-6 or worse and I think he may be out. Don't know anything about their new AD, but he may see a 7 win record this year and say that's good enough to keep him around to see what happens in year 4. I know they're used to winning, but I think 4 years is fair.

Is there a target number of commits by a certain date to be on schedule, like Michigan wants 20 commits by Thanksgiving? Or is it too specific to the recruits and their timelines?

Is Harbaugh's unique "style" of recruiting going to have negative consequences eventually?  (by style, I mean, recruits coming and going so quickly, offering a lot, telling some to take a hike, or just not calling them for awhile, etc.)

CB recruiting were fine with.  We just landed 2 studs last year, and probably 2 more studs this year (Juste and Thomas).  It is the position we are 'most loaded' at with young players IMO, so im not really sure why your worried about that position.

DT position, however, i am definitely genuinely worried about going forward.

If you had to be really reductive and simplistic and give numerical percentages to the odds of the top recruits we've discussed ad nauseum (DPJ, Collins, Wilson, etc) what would those HOT TAKE numbers be?

Read that he isn't talking to any coaches during this time in the season.

Do you feel he is a legitimate option? Or will end up at Bama/elsewhere? Any reason to look into interest from Stephen Carr?

Thanks

There have been hints by players (Devin Gardner and Denard included) of improper offers by programs during the recruiting process. Do you as a recruiting analyst hear about this cheating? How come the players don't disclose these cheaters after enrolling to a program?

Are there any realistic targets at safety after Kelly-Powell? Are the cornerback targets basically pipe dreams after St. Juste? Given the DB depth chart it seems like there would be plenty of opportunity to sell, but there seems to be a small pool.

great question.  we all know OL, WR, LB, etc require a serious influx of talent, as does DT and DB, but they seem to have more options / targets at the former spots (in addition to current commits) with less real targets at DT and DB.

outside of the staffs top 1-2 targets at DT and DB, who might be options?  now or down the road?  seems like kelly-powell is the only real S name floating around, thomas is one of the only CBs left (as well as holmes from cali) and tufele seems to be the only elite DT with mutual interest.

any chance they get an official from a guy like grant delpit now miles is out (bc i think hes a future star)?  and are they really hoping to pair irving-bay with hudson at DT?  bc theyre nice developmental prospects with big frames but currently lack some of the skills of higher end prospects.

they have a few DT / DB commits but obviously need to add further talent - and whoever ends up signing at those spots will likely be relied on to play early and often.  insight please?  thanks

DT recruiting.

Besides the big fella from Utah (who appears to be leaning towards OSU), who else are we after and is it not that big of a deal that we don't have a couple spots filled at the position this year?

DL/DT doesn't seem very deep next year.

About recruits and if so, does Michigan's coaches (besides Harbaugh) seem to have a different style of recruiting than other teams that sets Michigan up for landing top recruits on a consistent basis?

How many Penn St. commits should we expect to poach this class?

More seriously, are there actually any Penn St. commits that are first tier options? I've actually heard a few mentioned as potential targets, but would any be takes right now?

5-star Micah Parsons, but he's an '18 recruit. Steve has referred to his commitment as "butter-soft". Not sure how much he's interested in Michigan though.

From the 2017 class, no one really stands out. Brelin Faison-Walden has been mentioned.

Has how well Jabrill Pepers has been playing at his new defensive position encouraged any high level recruits to take a more serious look at Michigan, someone who could effectively play that roll when Peppers is taken in the first round of the draft.
