Stephen Curry impressed with Stauskas' youtube exploits, calls for a head-to-head 3 point contest

Submitted by Butterfield on

Fluff, but cool fluff.  Former Davidson and current Golden State Warrior sharpshooter Steph Curry has seen Nik Stauskas' 3 point shooting exploits, called Nik's skills "impressive", and has (jokingly?) suggested they put their skills to the test head to head.

Nice to see our guys getting props from good/great NBA talent, especially since those guys are a little busy with the playoffs at the moment.

That is really cool.  Steph Curry is like the NBA version of Stauskas, so if Nik could even come close to hanging with him it would be really impressive.

I think it is implied that the NBA version of Stauskas would shoot NBA threes.  The college version of Curry would shoot.... college threes.  Stauskas/College = Curry/NBA.

He isn't even saying Stauskas will be as good as Curry in the NBA.  Just one of those anologies.  Really just saying that Curry is on another level and since its his full time job to drain three's he will most likely smoke Stauskas at any 3 point competition

The video is amazing, but Nik shot just 9 / 24 in the tournament (.375%), or 3 out of 18 (.166%) if you take out the Florida game. In BIG play he shot 32 out of 89 or 359%, hardly earth shattering stats in meangingful games. He did shoot 44% on the season though, and you know, he is more than just a 3 point shooter.

Certainly there is a lot of room for improvement from those numbers, but there aren't too many freshman out there who wouldn't have worn down over the course of the year and seen numbers decline, especially as the pressure intensified.  Have a gut feeling that he'll be darn near unstopable by the end of his Michigan career when he has the legs to play large minutes the whole season and is adjusted to the pressure that goes along with the top level of NCAA basketball.

I agree, it really doesn't make sense to say "except when he was really good, he wasn't quite as good."  Every good shooter will have good and bad shooting nights, that's just part of it.  When you have a low occurence event like 3-pt shooting or batting in baseball, you'll always look streaky in small sample sizes.

The effort to downplay Nik's year is peculiar to me.

In B1G play, Nik had the 12th best 3pt% in the entire conference, and was 3rd for freshmen (behind Harris and Dekker), not bad when "don't let Stauskas shoot a 3" was the 1st or second emphasis (don't let Burke into the lane being the other) of every defense.

He currently stands 3rd in career 3pt% in Michigan history (behind Rice and Higgins) and his season was the 9th single best season in 3pt% in Michigan history (all the others occurred wh the line was shorter, by the way).

He shot "just" 38% from 3 for the tournament.  That seems pretty good.  Trey shot 31% for comparison.  It's also easy to play the "if you take" game.  If you take out Nik's worst game of the tournament, he shot 45% from the field in the tourney.  If you take Nik's two worst B1G games out, he shot 41% from 3.

So, I guess it's true that Nik doesn't shoot as well as a freshman in B1G play when some of the best defenses in the country are keyed on stopping him from shooting the 3 as he does in the video, but he still shoots awfully well.  And he does so in large part because of all the time practicing shooting, just like the video demonstrates.

Some people appear to have been blinded by Nik's almost inhuman start to the year to the excellent year Nik had.

NBA, International, or NCAA? Which 3-pt line would they shoot from? I think Nik and his rebounding buddies need to get the measuring tape and paint can out to redo his court so he can properly prepare for this showdown.

Nik needs to get better shooting off his own dribble and/or with a defender flying at him.  If he improves on those shots where he takes 2 or 3 dribbles to side-step a defender, he'd be lethal.  We needed a couple of those shots to fall against Louisville and we would've been up even more.

On a side note, Canada might have a pretty decent to good Olympic team within the next decade. Players of note;
(NBA) not counting Nash (old/ won't play)
Tristan Thompson- Cavs
Andrew Nicholson- Magic
Corey Joseph- Spurs
(Collegiate)
Sir Nik
Anthony Bennett-Unlv
Olnyk- Zags
Kevin Pangos- Zags
(Extra)
HS stud and 5star Andrew Wiggins

..and take notes.  No one squares up as quickly and effortlessly.  Nik gets taken off his rhythm and has his percentages go down in a hurry if he's on the move (except from that left baseline where he's almost always in sync it seems.)  Curry is a wizard at finding perfect form even with little space or time in which to work.

Not sure what this says about me but I just watched the whole five minutes of Stauskas shooting 3's back home in the rain. He hit 46 in a row before missing his first...

I will take Nik anyday against any other shooter in a shooting contest, even Curry.

Yes, he does need to get better at shooting at crunch time and getting free to be able to take more shots. I hope he does as many agility drills as shooting drills this summer. But frankly, for a freshman, Nik was outrageously awesome and with his work ethic I have no doubts he will be even more impressive in the future.

attracted a seemingly unsolicited comment from Stephen Curry. How is it possible for anyone  to bitch about anything in this thread? I'll bet you hate Santa and the Easter Bunny too.

That was fucking incredible. 46 in a row? As my daughter always says to me, "Are you serious".

Nik's consistency is astounding. On virtually every shot he lands the same distance in front of  the 3 point arc, with his right foot a half step or so in front of his left foot.
